Boundless Daily: The Heart of a Servant

Welcome to another Boundless Daily Micro-Study.

We are so glad you’re here with us today. Whether you’re reading this during a quick break on a long shift, in a quiet house while the kids sleep, or from a hospital room, know that you are part of a global family.

At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.

Today, we are diving into a topic that feels counter-cultural: Joy in Service.

In a world that tells us to look out for "Number One," Jesus shows us a different way. He shows us that the path to true joy actually starts with a towel and a basin.

The Upside-Down Kingdom

If you look at the world around us, greatness is usually measured by how many people serve you.

It’s about status, titles, and how much influence you hold over others. But Jesus flipped the script entirely.

In Matthew 23:11, He said, "The greatest among you must be a servant."

This isn’t just a nice suggestion for people who have extra time. It’s a fundamental shift in how we see ourselves and the people around us.

When we talk about having the heart of a servant, we aren't talking about being a doormat. We are talking about having the strength and humility to put others first because we know exactly who we are in Christ.

Why Service Brings Joy

You might wonder, "How can giving my time and energy away make me happy?"

It seems like a contradiction. Usually, we think joy comes from getting what we want.

But the joy of the Lord is different. It’s a byproduct of alignment. When we serve, we are aligning our hearts with the heart of God.

The Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths remind us that the mission of the Church is to demonstrate God’s love and compassion for all the world (Truth #10). When you serve, you become a physical expression of that compassion.

There is a unique kind of peace that settles over you when you stop focusing on your own problems and start looking for how you can bless someone else.

It’s Spirit-empowered living in action. It’s not about your own strength; it’s about the Holy Spirit working through you to touch another life.

Micro-Service in a Digital World

We know many of you in our Boundless community are in unique situations.

Maybe you’re a caregiver who rarely leaves the house. Maybe you work the night shift and your "community" is mostly online. Maybe you’re in a place where attending a physical church isn't safe or possible.

The good news is that having a servant’s heart isn't limited by your physical location. Service doesn't always have to be a big, organized event. It can happen in "micro" moments.

Here are a few ways you can serve right where you are:

  • In the Comments: A kind, encouraging word on a post can change someone's entire day.

  • Through Prayer: Taking a moment to truly pray for a request you see online is a high form of service.

  • In your Household: Doing a small task for a family member without being asked.

  • At Work: Being the person who listens when a coworker is stressed.

These small acts are the building blocks of a servant’s heart.

Humility: The Foundation

You can’t have a servant’s heart without humility.

Humility isn't thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less. It’s recognizing that every person you encounter is someone Jesus loved enough to die for.

When we look at people through that lens, service becomes natural. We stop seeing people as interruptions and start seeing them as opportunities to share the love of Christ.

This aligns with our belief in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ (Truth #3). He was God, yet He chose to serve. If the Creator of the universe didn't think He was "too good" to wash feet, then we shouldn't either.

Moving From Believer to Disciple

There’s a big difference between believing in Jesus and following Jesus.

A believer might show up for the benefits. They want the peace, the hope, and the promise of heaven. And those things are wonderful!

But a disciple, a true follower, wants to be like the Master.

The heart of a servant is the mark of a maturing disciple. It’s the sign that the Holy Spirit is doing a deep work in your life, moving you from self-focus to Christ-focus.

If you’ve been feeling a bit "stuck" in your faith lately, try serving.

It’s amazing how quickly your perspective shifts when you start looking for ways to be a blessing.

A Prayer for a Servant's Heart

Lord, thank You for the example of Jesus. Thank You that You don't call us to a life of drudgery, but a life of joyful service. Help us to see the people around us through Your eyes today. Give us the humility to put others first and the strength to serve with joy, knowing that when we serve the "least of these," we are serving You. Fill us with Your Spirit so that our service comes from a place of overflow, not obligation. Amen.

What’s Your Next Step?

Maybe your next step is simply to pray for one person today.

Maybe it’s to join an online study to learn more about Faith and Discipleship.

Whatever it is, don't feel like you have to do it alone. We are here to walk with you.

If you want to dig deeper into how we live out our faith through service, you can explore more on our Outreach and Service blog category.

We believe that as you develop the heart of a servant, you will find a level of joy that the world simply cannot offer.
