Have you ever had one of those moments where your heart just felt too full for words? Maybe it was watching a sunrise, holding a newborn, or finally seeing a long-awaited prayer answered. In those moments, "thank you" or "wow" doesn't quite cut it. There is a specific kind of internal pressure, a good kind, where the joy or the awe just needs a place to go.
In our walk with God, there is an experience that feels exactly like that, but on a spiritual level. We call it the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. At Boundless Online Church, we love talking about this because it isn’t just a "churchy" topic; it’s a life-changing encounter with the presence of God. Today, we’re looking at what we call the "Initial Physical Evidence" of this baptism. It’s actually the 8th Fundamental Truth of the Assemblies of God, and it’s all about the overflow.
What Does "Initial Physical Evidence" Even Mean?
If you’re new here or maybe you’re exploring faith for the first time at our Welcome Center, some of these terms can sound a bit technical. Let’s break it down into plain English.
"Initial" means the first thing that happens. "Physical" means something you can actually observe with your senses. "Evidence" means proof that something has occurred. So, when we talk about the initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, we are talking about the very first outward sign that someone has been filled to overflowing with God’s Spirit.
According to the Bible, that sign is speaking in other tongues.
Now, I know what you might be thinking. "Wait, speaking in tongues? Isn't that a bit intense?" It can certainly feel that way if you haven’t experienced it or seen it explained clearly. But when we look at it through the lens of God’s love and His desire to empower us, it starts to make a lot of beautiful sense.

The Biblical Pattern
We aren't just making this up because it sounds interesting. We find this pattern all over the Book of Acts in the Bible. It’s like a spiritual blueprint.
Think back to the Day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. The disciples were waiting in an upper room, just like Jesus told them to. Suddenly, a sound like a rushing wind filled the house, and what looked like tongues of fire rested on them. The Bible says they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
But it didn't stop there. This wasn't a one-time event for a few "super-Christians." Throughout the early church, whenever people were baptized in the Spirit, there was an outward, audible sign. In Acts 10, when the Holy Spirit fell on Cornelius and his household, the believers who were with Peter were astonished. Why? "For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God."
The sign was the evidence that the promise had been fulfilled. It’s like seeing steam coming off a cup of coffee; the steam isn’t the coffee itself, but it’s the physical evidence that the coffee is hot and active.
Why the Tongue?
You might wonder, why didn't God choose a different sign? Why not a glowing light around our heads or the ability to fly? (Okay, flying would be pretty cool).
James 3 in the Bible tells us that the tongue is the most difficult part of the human body to control. It’s like a small rudder that steers a massive ship. It can bring life or it can bring destruction. By choosing the tongue as the initial sign of His Spirit’s overflow, God is essentially saying, "If I have your tongue, I have all of you."
It is the ultimate act of surrender. When we speak in tongues, we aren't using our own intellect or vocabulary. We are yielding our most "un-tamable" member to the Holy Spirit and letting Him pray through us. It is a beautiful, humble way to say, "God, I give you total control."

It’s About Power, Not Just a Sign
It’s easy to get caught up in the "sign" and forget the "purpose." The Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't just about getting a "spiritual badge of honor." It’s about power for living and power for sharing the Good News.
Jesus said in Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..."
The overflow of the Spirit gives us a boldness we didn't have before. It gives us a deeper hunger for the Bible and a more vibrant prayer life. If you feel like your spiritual life has been a bit "dry" lately, or like you’re just going through the motions, this is for you. This overflow is meant to refresh you and equip you to help others meet Jesus.
Whether you are a shift worker catching this post at 3:00 AM or a caregiver looking for a moment of peace, know that this power is available to you right where you are. You don't need to be in a special building; you just need a hungry heart.
Common Questions and Roadblocks
We hear a lot of questions about this in our Bible Study Club. People often ask, "Do I have to speak in tongues to be saved?"
The short answer is no. Salvation is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a subsequent experience, it’s something that happens after you’ve already decided to follow Jesus. It’s an "extra" gift. Think of it like this: Salvation is like getting a brand-new car. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like someone handing you a gas card with an unlimited balance. You already have the car, but the gas card is what allows you to go the distance and reach your destination with power.
Another common hurdle is the feeling of "I'm not holy enough." Let's clear that up right now. You don't receive the Holy Spirit because you are perfect; you receive Him because you are His. It is a gift, not a reward for good behavior. If you are a child of God, the gift is already promised to you.

How to Receive the Overflow
So, how do you actually experience this? It’s simpler than we often make it out to be.
Ask. Jesus said if we, being human, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will the Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? (Luke 11:13).
Believe. Trust that God wants to fill you. You don't have to "beg" a loving Father for something He has already promised to give you.
Yield. This is the part where we stop trying to control everything. Relax. Focus on Jesus. As you praise Him, you might feel words or sounds in your spirit that aren't part of your regular language. Step out in faith and speak them.
It might start as just a few syllables, and that’s okay! It’s like a baby learning to talk. The more you use your prayer language, the more natural it becomes. It’s a direct line to God that bypasses your brain and goes straight from your spirit to His.
