Can I Experience the Holy Spirit Today?

Tier 2 – Spirit-Curious Believers

Yes, absolutely. The Holy Spirit isn't confined to Bible times or special people. He's actively present today, waiting to fill, empower, and guide every believer who asks. Through Scripture, prayer, community, and faith, you can experience His real presence and power in your everyday life right now.

Let me be straight with you: the Holy Spirit isn't some mystical force reserved for super-spiritual people or ancient apostles. He's here. He's real. And He's available to you today, whether you're sitting in a Memphis coffee shop, stuck in traffic on I-40, or reading this on your lunch break in Cordova.

The Promise Is for You

When Peter stood up on the Day of Pentecost and preached to thousands, he made something crystal clear: "The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call" (Acts 2:39). That includes you. That includes me. That includes every person who calls on the name of Jesus.

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit wasn't a one-time event that ended in the first century. It's an ongoing reality of the Christian life. Jesus Himself said, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13).

Notice He didn't say "gave" or "used to give." He said "will give", present tense, ongoing action.

What Does It Mean to Experience the Holy Spirit?

I get it. The language around the Holy Spirit can feel confusing or even intimidating. Let me break it down in practical terms.

Experiencing the Holy Spirit starts with salvation. When you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. He seals you, indwells you, and begins the work of transforming you from the inside out (Ephesians 1:13-14). This is foundational, you can't experience the fullness of the Spirit without first knowing Jesus.

But there's more. The Bible teaches about a distinct experience called the baptism in the Holy Spirit. This is what happened at Pentecost when the believers were filled with the Spirit and began speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4). This empowerment is still available today.

The baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't about being "more saved" or earning God's approval. It's about being empowered for service and witness. It's about receiving supernatural boldness, spiritual gifts, and a deeper intimacy with God. As we believe and teach at First Assembly Memphis, this baptism is evidenced by speaking in tongues, a prayer language that edifies your spirit and connects you to God in ways beyond human understanding (1 Corinthians 14:2-4).

How the Spirit Shows Up in Daily Life

So what does this look like in real, everyday Memphis life? Let me paint some pictures:

Through Scripture – Ever read a passage you've read a hundred times and suddenly it hits different? That's the Spirit opening your eyes to truth. He takes the words on the page and makes them come alive in your heart.

Through Prayer – Sometimes prayer feels like talking to the ceiling. Other times, you feel a tangible presence, a peace that makes no sense, or words flowing that you didn't plan. That's the Spirit interceding, guiding, and communing with you (Romans 8:26-27).

Through Community – The Spirit works powerfully through the body of Christ. That word of encouragement from a friend at church, the timely prayer someone prayed over you, the conviction you felt during worship, these are the Spirit working through community.

Through Spiritual Gifts – The Spirit distributes gifts to build up the church: prophecy, healing, words of knowledge, discernment, and more (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). These aren't fairy tales. We've seen healings in our congregation. We've heard prophetic words that changed lives. We've watched the Spirit move in powerful ways.

Through Circumstances – Sometimes the Spirit redirects your plans, opens unexpected doors, or closes ones you thought were certain. He's sovereign over your story, and He guides you through life's twists and turns.

Through Boldness and Power – One of the clearest signs of the Spirit's presence is boldness to share Jesus. The same disciples who hid in fear after the crucifixion became unstoppable witnesses after Pentecost. That same courage is available to you when you need to speak truth, stand for righteousness, or share the gospel with your coworker.

Spirit Baptism: Your Next Step

If you're reading this and thinking, "I want that. I want more. I want to experience the fullness of the Spirit", here's what you do:

Ask. Jesus said to ask, so ask. Pray something like, "Father, fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Baptize me in Your power. I want everything You have for me."

Believe. Receive by faith. Don't wait to feel something first. Trust that God keeps His promises and that He's faithful to fill those who ask.

Expect. Be open to the Spirit's leading. If He gives you a prayer language, don't overthink it, just let it flow. If He moves in a different way, embrace it.

Stay Connected. Surround yourself with Spirit-filled believers. Attend a church where the Spirit is welcomed and expected, not controlled, but honored. If you're in the Memphis area, we'd love to have you join us at First Assembly Memphis. We're a community that believes the Spirit is active, powerful, and available today.

Don't Settle for Less

Here's the hard truth: too many believers settle for a version of Christianity that's all head knowledge and no heart experience. They believe in the Holy Spirit theologically but never encounter Him personally. That's like believing in food but never eating.

God doesn't want you to just know about Him. He wants you to know Him, intimately, powerfully, experientially. The Spirit isn't a doctrine to study; He's a Person to encounter.

I've met people who've walked with Jesus for years but never stepped into the fullness of the Spirit. And when they finally do, when they surrender, ask, and receive, everything changes. Their prayer life deepens. Their joy multiplies. Their boldness explodes. Their love for God and people intensifies.

That can be your story too.

Practical Steps to Cultivate the Spirit's Presence

Read the Word daily. The Spirit and the Word work together. You can't separate them. As you read Scripture, ask the Spirit to illuminate truth.

Pray in the Spirit. If you've received your prayer language, use it regularly. Paul said he prayed in tongues more than anyone (1 Corinthians 14:18). There's power in it.

Worship authentically. The Spirit loves to move in an atmosphere of worship. Put on some worship music. Sing to Jesus. Let His presence fill your car, your home, your life.

Stay humble and sensitive. The Spirit can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30) or quenched (1 Thessalonians 5:19). Walk in purity. Listen to His promptings. Obey quickly.

Gather with believers. Don't isolate. The Spirit works powerfully in corporate settings. Join a small group, attend services, surround yourself with people who are hungry for God.

Why This Matters for Memphis

At First Assembly Memphis, we're committed to seeing people encounter the living God, not just hear about Him. We believe the Spirit is the key to transformation, both personally and in our city. Memphis needs Spirit-filled believers who carry the presence of God into schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and families.

When you experience the Holy Spirit, you become a carrier of His presence. You bring hope to hopeless places. You bring healing to broken situations. You become a conduit for the Kingdom of God to break into everyday life.

That's why we're passionate about teaching and activating believers in the power of the Spirit. It's not just for Sunday mornings. It's for Monday through Saturday too.

Your Invitation

So can you experience the Holy Spirit today? Not only can you, you're invited to. God is waiting. He's not holding back. He's not playing favorites. He's ready to fill you, empower you, and use you in ways you can't imagine.

Don't wait another day. Don't let fear, doubt, or confusion rob you of what God has freely offered. Ask. Believe. Receive.
