Can I Really Grow in Faith If I Can’t Attend Church in Person?

Yes. You can grow in faith even when you can’t attend in person. God’s Word still nourishes you, the Holy Spirit still fills and leads you, and biblical community is still possible through intentional connection. The goal isn’t isolation—it’s staying rooted in Jesus and connected to His people.
Why This Question Matters (And Why We’re Asking It)
Some seasons of life don’t fit the “Sunday morning at 10 a.m.” model. Maybe you’re caring for an aging parent. Maybe you’re deployed overseas. Maybe health issues, work schedules, or distance keep you from walking into a building every week.
Does that mean your faith is stuck?
Absolutely not.
But it does mean we have to be honest about what growth actually requires—and what it doesn’t.
Here’s the WHY behind FA Memphis and Boundless:
At FA Memphis (here in Cordova, TN), we believe in-person gathering matters. Hebrews 10:25 is clear: we’re not supposed to abandon meeting together. There’s something powerful about worshiping alongside other believers, hearing the Word preached live, serving shoulder-to-shoulder, and being known by name in your local church family.
But we also know life isn’t always that simple.
That’s why Boundless Online Church exists. Boundless is an online outreach ministry of FA Memphis, designed as a bridge, not a replacement. It’s for people who are homebound, out of state, deployed, isolated, or simply exploring faith from a distance. We offer real community, clear teaching, discipleship pathways, and care, because the Kingdom is bigger than a zip code.
And as Pentecostal believers, we also hold this confidence: the Holy Spirit isn’t limited by geography. The same Spirit who met the early church in homes, prisons, and open fields can meet you right where you are (Acts 1:8). God can strengthen you in a living room, a hospital room, a dorm room, or on a night shift—while still calling you toward meaningful connection with the Body of Christ.
Our goal isn’t to keep you online forever. It’s to help you grow where you are right now, while encouraging you to connect with a healthy local church when and if that becomes possible.

What the Bible Actually Says About Growth and Community
Let’s start with Scripture, because that’s our foundation.
Spiritual growth is relational. Look at Colossians 3:12–13: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another.”
You can’t “bear with” or “forgive” someone you never interact with. Growth happens in relationships—learning to love people who are different from you, forgiving when it’s hard, serving when it’s inconvenient.
But here’s what people miss: community doesn’t always mean a physical building.
In the New Testament, the early church met in homes (Romans 16:5). Paul discipled people by letter (all those epistles). Timothy received faith and teaching through family discipleship before he ever traveled anywhere (2 Timothy 1:5).
The point? God uses many tools to grow His people. The key is staying connected to Him and to others—not isolating yourself and calling it “personal faith.”
A Pentecostal Note: The Holy Spirit Can Reach You Right Where You Are
If you’ve ever wondered, “Can God really move in my life if I’m not in the room?”—I want to answer that clearly:
Yes.
We believe the Holy Spirit is active today—guiding, convicting, comforting, empowering, and filling believers (John 14:26; Acts 2:39). He can meet you in prayer at home. He can open Scripture to your heart while you’re reading alone. He can prompt you to reach out for accountability. He can stir your faith during worship even through a livestream.
Digital discipleship isn’t a “lesser” version of spiritual life—it’s one of the ways God can keep you connected during a season when in-person attendance isn’t possible.
Misconceptions We Need to Clear Up
Misconception #1: “I can grow just fine on my own with a Bible and YouTube.”
Not quite. You can learn on your own. But growth usually requires accountability, correction, encouragement, and the friction that comes from doing life with other believers. James 5:16 says, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”
If no one knows you, no one can pray for you. If no one walks with you, no one can help course-correct when you drift.
Misconception #2: “Online church isn’t real church.”
Wrong framing. Boundless isn’t trying to replace the local church—it’s providing real biblical community and discipleship for people who can’t access a healthy local church right now. That’s a huge difference.
We’re not talking about passively watching sermons. We’re talking about intentional connection: prayer, conversations, groups, and next steps.
Misconception #3: “If I can’t attend, I’m a second-class Christian.”
God doesn’t measure faithfulness by your Sunday attendance record. He measures it by the condition of your heart and your obedience to His Word. If you’re seeking Him, staying in Scripture, connecting with other believers (even digitally), and applying what you learn, you’re growing.

Practical Steps for Growing When You Can’t Attend In Person
Here’s how to make real progress, even from a distance:
1. Get into Scripture daily.
Not just reading—studying. Pick a book of the Bible and work through it slowly. Ask questions: What does this teach me about God? About myself? What needs to change?
2. Choose connection over consumption.
If you’re outside Memphis (or you’re homebound), this is where Boundless Online Church can really help. Don’t just watch—join in. Engage with people. Ask for prayer. Take a step into community.
3. Stay accountable.
Find one or two people (online or local) who will check in with you, pray with you, and ask the hard questions. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
4. Make room for the Holy Spirit daily.
Invite the Spirit to search your heart, strengthen you, and lead you (Psalm 139:23–24). Pray simply: “Holy Spirit, help me follow Jesus today.” Then obey the next small step He puts in front of you.
5. Pursue a local church when possible.
If you’re online because of temporary circumstances, start praying about and researching healthy local churches in your area. And if you can attend a healthy local church near you, we’ll always celebrate and encourage that—it’s a Kingdom win.
