Christian Life : Finding Your Identity in Christ When Your Career Changes

A Message from FA Memphis

Have you ever walked into a room, met someone new, and the very first question they asked was, "So, what do you do?"

For most of us, that question is easy to answer. "I’m a nurse." "I work the night shift at the warehouse." "I’m an accountant." We’ve become so used to defining ourselves by our titles, our shifts, and our salaries that we often forget those things are temporary.

But what happens when the job goes away? What happens when your company downsizes, your health forces a career change, or you finally transition from that high-pressure corporate role to something completely different?

If your identity is wrapped up in your business card, a career change feels like a personal crisis. But as believers, we have a foundation that doesn't shake when the economy does. In this corner of the Christian Life series, we’re talking about how to find your true identity in Jesus when everything else is shifting.

The Trap of the "Work Identity"

It’s easy to see why we get caught in this trap. We spend most of our waking hours at work. For shift workers, work dictates when you sleep, when you eat, and when you see your family. For professionals, the ladder of success often feels like the only thing worth climbing.

But here’s the truth: Your job is what you do, not who you are.

In the Assemblies of God doctrine, we believe that our primary identity comes from being created in the image of God and being redeemed by the blood of Jesus. This is what we call "Salvation", one of our core Fundamental Truths. When you accepted Christ, you didn't just get a new hobby or a Sunday morning routine. You got a new DNA. You became a child of the King.

When your career changes, it’s a change in your assignment, not a change in your value. If you’re a night-shift worker moving to a day-shift role, or a manager stepping into a freelance life, your "boss" has changed, but your Father hasn't.

Your Calling vs. Your Career

We often use the words "calling" and "career" interchangeably, but they are actually very different.

Your career is the specific job you hold at any given time. It’s the task you perform to earn a living. Your calling is your God-given purpose to love Him, serve others, and share the Gospel.

The Reformers used to talk about "vocation" as a way of serving God through our daily tasks. Whether you are sweeping a floor or running a boardroom, your calling is to reflect Christ’s character. This is part of "Sanctification", the process of being set apart for God’s purposes.

If you view your work as an expression of your calling, then a career change isn't a loss of purpose; it’s just a change of scenery for that purpose to play out. You can find more resources on living out your faith daily in our Faith and Discipleship category.

Navigating the Emotional Rollercoaster

Career transitions are hard. Let's be real, they can be scary. There’s the fear of the unknown, the stress of finances, and sometimes the blow to our ego. If you’ve been "the go-to person" for ten years and suddenly you’re the "new person" who doesn't know where the coffee filters are, it stings.

Here are a few ways to keep your heart anchored during the transition:

1. Examine Your Ambition

Is your drive coming from a desire for "worldly ambition", status, money, and personal glory? Or is it "godly ambition", serving others and honoring God? Philippians 2:3 tells us to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. When we shift our focus to serving, the "title" matters a lot less.

2. Stay in the Word

When the world tells you that you are "unemployed" or "overqualified" or "just a worker," the Bible tells you that you are "chosen," "redeemed," and "loved." Spending time in Scripture reminds you of your permanent status. If you're looking for a community to dive into the Word with, check out our Bible Study Club.

3. Lean on Community

You weren't meant to carry the weight of a career shift alone. Whether you’re a professional navigating a layoff or a shift worker trying to find a new rhythm, the Church is your support system. We believe that the Church is the body of Christ, meant to build each other up.

A Special Word for Shift Workers and Late-Nighters

We know that many of you in our Boundless Online Church family work unconventional hours. You might be reading this at 3:00 AM on a break or at 10:00 AM when the rest of the world is just getting started.

Career changes for shift workers often mean a complete lifestyle overhaul. It affects your physical health and your social connections. Please know that your worth is not found in your ability to "grind" or work double shifts. Your worth is found in the rest that Jesus provides.

Even if your schedule makes it hard to attend a traditional church service, you are a vital part of the Kingdom. We’ve designed our Online Programs to meet you exactly where you are, regardless of the clock.

Practical Steps for Your Transition

If you are in the middle of a career change right now, try these three things this week:

  • Audit Your Language: Stop saying "I am a [Job Title]." Start saying "I am a follower of Jesus who currently works as a [Job Title]." It sounds small, but it changes your mindset.

  • Update Your "Resume" for God: Instead of just listing your skills, ask God, "How can I use my talents to serve people in this new environment?"

  • Connect with Others: If you’re a man looking for guidance during a career shift, our Bible Study for Men is a great place to find brothers who have been there.

Moving Forward with Confidence

Transition is not a sign of failure. In the Bible, we see God moving people all the time. Moses went from being a prince to a shepherd to a leader. Paul went from being a Pharisee to a tentmaker to an apostle. Their jobs changed, but their God remained the same.

Your career might be in flux, but your identity in Christ is "settled in heaven." You are a child of God, an heir to the Kingdom, and an ambassador for Christ. No job loss can take that away, and no promotion can make it more true.

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. If you're feeling lost in the shuffle of a career move, we would love to walk with you. You can find a welcoming place to start at our I'm New Q&A Center.
