Christian Life: How to Disciple Your Children Digitally

A Message from FA Memphis

Hey there! If you’re a parent, grandparent, or guardian today, you already know that the world looks a lot different than it did when we were growing up.

I remember a time when "discipleship" happened mostly in a wooden pew on Sunday morning or around a kitchen table with a physical Bible. While those things are still incredibly important, the reality is that our kids are spending a huge chunk of their lives in a digital world.

From the moment they wake up to the time they hit the pillow, screens are part of the landscape. As followers of Jesus, we have a choice: we can view technology with fear and push it away, or we can see it as a new mission field: a place where we can intentionally guide our children to meet Jesus and grow in faith.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that faith formation happens everywhere. If Jesus is Lord of our lives, He’s Lord of our "Likes," our shares, and our screen time, too.

What is Digital Discipleship?

So, what are we actually talking about when we say "digital discipleship"?

Simply put, it’s intentionally guiding your children to navigate technology through a biblical lens. It’s recognizing that their relationship with Christ is being shaped by what they see on their smartphones and tablets just as much as what they hear in a sermon.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we place a high priority on biblical authority. We believe the Word of God is our "all-sufficient rule for faith and practice." If that’s true, then the Bible has a lot to say about how we behave online, how we treat others in a comment section, and how we guard our hearts against things that pull us away from God.

Digital discipleship isn't about being a "tech expert." It’s about being a spiritual mentor who happens to use a device.

Moving From Fear to Stewardship

It’s easy to get scared. We hear about the dangers of the internet every day. But as believers, we aren't called to live in fear. We are called to be stewards of the gifts God has given us.

Technology is a tool. Like a hammer, it can be used to build something beautiful or it can be used to break things down. Our job is to teach our kids how to build.

When we approach technology as a stewardship issue, the conversation changes. Instead of "Put that phone away because it’s bad," it becomes "How can we use this device to honor God today?"

This aligns perfectly with our belief in Spirit-empowered living. We need the Holy Spirit to give us and our children wisdom and discernment. We aren't just trying to follow a set of digital rules; we are trying to develop a holy character that shines through the screen.

Practical Steps for the Digital Home

How do we actually do this? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few ways you can start discipling your kids digitally today:

1. Be Present in Their Digital World

Don't let your kids navigate the internet alone. Just like you wouldn't drop them off in the middle of a busy city by themselves, don't leave them to figure out social media or gaming on their own.

Sit with them. Ask them what they’re playing or watching. Play the game with them! When you are present, you create opportunities for "teaching moments" that feel natural rather than forced.

2. Prioritize Character Over Control

Filters and parental controls are great (and we recommend them!), but they aren't a substitute for a changed heart. Our goal is to raise kids who choose what is good because they love Jesus, not just because they’re being blocked from what is bad.

Talk to them about why certain content isn't helpful for a Christian. Help them develop internal wisdom. Ask them, "How does this app help you love God or love your neighbor?"

3. Use Technology as a Teaching Tool

There is so much incredible, high-quality Christian content available now. Use it!

Find YouTube channels that explain Bible stories, or use apps that help kids memorize scripture. You can even create things together. Maybe your family could start a group chat where you share a daily verse or a prayer request.

Check out our Bible Study Club for ideas on how to engage with the Word in a community setting.

Modeling Authentic Faith

One of the biggest parts of discipling our children is letting them see us live out our faith. They are watching how we use our phones.

If we tell them to be kind online but we’re arguing with strangers on Facebook, they see the inconsistency. If we tell them to prioritize God but we’re scrolling through TikTok during our prayer time, they notice.

Model what it looks like to have a healthy relationship with technology. Let them see you using your device to read the Bible, to encourage a friend, or to participate in an Online Program. Show them that your digital life is an extension of your walk with Christ.

The Power of Relationship

At the end of the day, discipleship is about relationship. Screens should support our connections, not replace them.

Use technology to bridge gaps. If you have older kids who have moved away, a video call can be a sacred time to pray together. If your kids are at home, use digital tools to spark face-to-face conversations.

We want our children to know that they are part of something bigger: a global family of believers. Whether they are engaging with their local church or connecting with us here at Boundless Online Church, they are learning what it means to be the Body of Christ in the 21st century.

Staying Safe and Wise

While we want to be positive, we also have to be practical. Part of discipling is protecting.

Keep devices in common areas of the house. Have "tech-free" zones like the dinner table. And most importantly, keep the lines of communication wide open. Your kids should feel safe coming to you if they see something that makes them feel uncomfortable or confused.

Instead of reacting with anger, react with grace and use it as a moment to point them back to the truth of God’s Word.

A Mission for the Whole Family

Discipling your children digitally is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes patience, consistency, and a lot of prayer. But remember, you aren't doing this alone.

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and our Guide. He cares about your children’s digital footprints even more than you do. Trust Him to give you the words to say and the wisdom to lead.

Let’s Walk This Path Together

We are so glad you are part of our community. We know that parenting in a digital age can feel overwhelming at times, but we are here to support you.

Do you have questions about tech safety? Or maybe a tip that has worked for your family? We’d love to hear from you. Join the conversation in our I’m New Q&A Welcome Center or jump into one of our Group Lists to connect with other parents.

Remember, the goal isn't perfection. The goal is progress. Every time you point your child toward Jesus through a screen, you are doing the work of the Kingdom.

A Prayer for Your Family

Lord, thank You for the gift of technology and the ways it allows us to connect and learn. We ask for Your wisdom as we lead our children. Help us to be parents who model Your love and truth in everything we do: both online and off. Guard our children’s hearts and minds. May they grow to be discerning disciples who use every tool at their disposal to bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
