Christian Life : Overcoming Shame with the Grace of Jesus

A Message from FA Memphis

We’ve all been there. That heavy, sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you think about something from your past. Maybe it’s a choice you made years ago, a relationship that ended badly, or a habit you just can’t seem to kick.

In the quiet moments, a voice whispers, “If people really knew who you were, they wouldn’t like you. If God really saw what you did, He wouldn’t want anything to do with you.”

That voice is shame. And if you’re carrying it today, I want you to take a deep breath. You are in a safe place. At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and a huge part of that growth is learning how to set down the heavy baggage of shame and pick up the light, life-giving gift of grace.

Understanding the Weight: Guilt vs. Shame

Before we dive into how to overcome it, we have to understand what we’re dealing with. There’s a big difference between guilt and shame, though they often travel together.

Guilt says, “I did something bad.” It’s a realization that our actions didn't line up with our values or God’s standards. Guilt can actually be helpful because it leads us to apologize and make things right.

Shame is different. Shame says, “I am bad.”

Shame doesn’t just attack what you did; it attacks who you are. It’s a sense of being fundamentally flawed, unworthy, or "damaged goods." While guilt can lead to change, shame usually leads to hiding. We hide from friends, we hide from our families, and, most painfully, we try to hide from God.

But here is the beautiful truth of the Gospel: God doesn’t want you to hide. He wants to heal.

A man stands on a sunrise hilltop, finding freedom and healing through the grace of Jesus Christ.

Your Identity: A Gift, Not an Achievement

In the Assemblies of God doctrine, we believe that salvation is a gift. It’s not something you earn by being "good enough," and it’s not something you lose because you were "bad enough."

Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."

If you are a seeker or someone with a difficult past, this is the best news you will ever hear. Your identity isn't defined by your worst mistake. It isn't defined by what your ex said about you, what your parents thought of you, or even what you think of yourself.

Your identity is defined by what Jesus Christ says about you.

When you put your trust in Jesus, a "great exchange" happens. He takes your sin, your mistakes, and yes, even your deep-seated shame, and He gives you His righteousness. You are declared guiltless. You are adopted into His family. You are a new creation.

How Jesus Dealt with Shame

Think about the people Jesus spent His time with while He was on earth. He didn't hang out with the people who had it all together. He went straight for the people carrying the most shame.

He sat with the woman at the well who had been through five failed marriages. He ate dinner with Zacchaeus, a tax collector everyone hated. He defended the woman caught in adultery when everyone else was ready to throw stones.

Jesus doesn't wait for you to clean yourself up before He approaches you. He meets you right in the middle of your mess. He took the ultimate shame: the shame of the cross: so that you would never have to carry yours alone again. By His death and resurrection, He broke the power of the past.

Practical Steps to Walk in Freedom

Knowing the truth in your head is one thing, but feeling it in your heart is another. If you've lived with shame for a long time, it takes practice to start living in grace. Here are a few ways to start that journey today:

1. Preach the Gospel to Yourself Every morning, remind yourself of the truth. When that voice of shame pops up, talk back to it. Tell yourself: "I am a child of God. I am forgiven. I am loved not because of what I do, but because of whose I am."

2. Stop Hiding Shame thrives in the dark. When we keep our secrets locked away, they grow. Bringing them into the light: confessing them to God and talking about them with a trusted, grace-filled community: takes away their power.

If you're looking for a place to start connecting with others who are on this same journey, check out our Bible Study Club. It’s a great way to find community without the fear of judgment.

3. Focus on the Savior, Not the Sin Imagine you’re learning to ride a bike. If you keep staring at the big rock in the middle of the road, you’re going to hit it. But if you look ahead at the path, you’ll steer clear.

Shame keeps your eyes glued to the "rock": your past mistakes. Grace invites you to look at Jesus. The more you focus on His character, His love, and His sacrifice, the smaller your past mistakes will begin to feel.

A New Chapter Starts Now

Maybe you’ve felt like your past has disqualified you from a relationship with God. Maybe you think you've gone too far or stayed away too long.

We want you to know that there is no "too far" for the grace of God. His arms are open wide, and He is inviting you home. You don't have to fix yourself first. You just have to come to Him.

If you are new here and have questions about what it means to follow Jesus or how to deal with the things you're walking through, we would love to meet you. You can join our I'm New Q&A Welcome Center to chat with people who genuinely care about your story.

You were made for more than a life of hiding. You were made for freedom, for joy, and for a purpose that is bigger than your past.

Let today be the day you set down the shame and pick up the grace. It’s a gift that’s already been paid for. All you have to do is receive it.

Let’s Pray Together

Lord, thank You for Your incredible grace. Thank You that You don't look at us through the lens of our mistakes, but through the lens of Your love. I pray for the person reading this right now who feels weighed down by shame. Would You break those chains today? Help them to see themselves the way You see them: as a cherished, forgiven, and valuable child of God. Give them the courage to step out of the shadows and into Your light. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A happy family walks through a sunlit meadow, finding a new beginning and restoration in Jesus.
