Have you ever felt like life was just getting a little too hot to handle? Maybe it’s a situation at work that won’t resolve, a health scare that came out of nowhere, or a relationship that feels like it’s being pulled apart at the seams. In those moments, it’s easy to feel like you’re being burned up: like the circumstances are designed to destroy everything you’ve worked so hard to build.
But what if the heat you’re feeling isn’t meant to consume you? What if, instead, it’s a refining fire?
At Boundless Online Church, we talk to people every day who are walking through the "furnace." Whether you’re joining us from Memphis, Tennessee, or tuning in from the other side of the world, the heat of a trial is a universal human experience. But as followers of Jesus, we have a different perspective on the fire. We believe that God doesn't just watch us suffer; He uses the fire to change us, to strengthen us, and to show us a version of Himself we could never see in the cool of the day.
The Difference Between a Forest Fire and a Refiner’s Fire
When we face hardship, our natural instinct is to think of it like a forest fire. A forest fire is chaotic. It’s out of control. It burns everything in its path with no regard for what is valuable and what is not. If you view your trials as a forest fire, you will naturally live in fear, wondering when the flames will finally take everything away.
However, the Bible uses a very specific image to describe how God works through our difficulties: the Refiner’s Fire.
In Assemblies of God doctrine, we often look at Malachi 3:3, which says, "He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver." Think about that image for a moment. A refiner doesn't walk away from the fire. He sits right next to it. He controls the temperature. He watches the metal carefully. Why? Because his goal isn't to destroy the silver; it’s to remove the dross: the impurities that keep the silver from being its most valuable, beautiful self.
The Refiner knows the fire is hot enough when he can see his own reflection in the surface of the liquid metal. In the same way, God uses the trials in our lives not to break us, but to burn away the pride, the fear, and the self-reliance that prevent us from reflecting the character of Jesus.
No Bowing Down: The Courage to Stand Firm
One of the most powerful stories of the fire is found in Daniel 3. You might remember the names from Sunday School: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They lived in a culture that demanded they "bow down" to an idol: a massive golden image set up by King Nebuchadnezzar. The penalty for refusing was a one-way trip into a burning fiery furnace.
Most people bowed. It was easier. It was safer. It was the "normal" thing to do. But these three men had a different posture. They had a "No Bowing Down" spirit.
They told the king, "Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace... But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods" (Daniel 3:17-18).
That phrase: "But if not": is the secret to growing through a trial. It’s the realization that our worship isn't based on whether God fixes our problem immediately. Our worship is based on who God is. When we refuse to bow to fear, or to the pressure to compromise our faith just to make the heat stop, something incredible happens.

The Fourth Man in the Fire
The most beautiful part of the story isn't that the men survived. It’s who they met inside the heat. When the king looked into the furnace, he didn't see three men burning; he saw four men walking around, unbound and unhurt. He said the fourth looked like "a son of the gods."
We know Him as Jesus.
If you are in the fire right now, you need to know this: You are not alone in the furnace.
Sometimes, God delivers us from the fire, but more often, He delivers us in the fire. He meets us in the middle of the pain. He walks with us through the diagnosis, through the grief, and through the loneliness. The only thing the fire burned away for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were the ropes that bound their hands.
The fire you’re facing today might just be the very thing God uses to set you free from the things that have been holding you back.
How to Grow Through the Heat: Practical Steps
Growing through a trial isn't about "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps." It’s about leaning into the Holy Spirit. Here are a few ways you can stay firm when the heat turns up:
Identify the "Idol" – Ask yourself: "What am I being tempted to bow down to?" Is it the need for everyone to like you? Is it financial security? Is it a life without any discomfort? When you identify what you’re afraid of losing, you can surrender it to God.
Look for the Fourth Man – Instead of focusing only on the flames, look for Jesus. Spend time in prayer, even if it’s just a few words. Read the Word. You’ll find that His presence is more real in the trial than it ever was in the "easy" times.
Don't Walk Alone – Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had each other. You weren't meant to walk through the furnace by yourself. This is why we created www.boundlessonlinechurch.org. Whether it’s through our virtual small groups or our live-streamed services, we are here to walk with you.
Check Your Reflection – Ask the Refiner, "Lord, what are You trying to show me? What are You burning away?" When we stop resisting the process and start trusting the Refiner, the transformation happens much faster.

A Prayer for Those in the Fire
Heavenly Father, I lift up the person reading this right now who feels the heat of the furnace. Lord, remind them that You are the Refiner, not the destroyer. I pray that they would feel the presence of the "Fourth Man" standing right next to them in the middle of their trial. Burn away the ropes of fear and anxiety that have kept them bound. Give them the courage to stand tall and refuse to bow to the pressures of this world. We trust Your heart, even when we can’t see the exit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
