Yes. The Holy Spirit is not limited by geography or church walls. Whether you are in a sanctuary or your living room, you can receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit by faith. It is a distinct, empowering work of God available to every believer who seeks Him.
There is a shift happening across the world right now. You’ve probably seen the videos of "living room revivals" or Gen Z worship nights in dorm rooms. For a long time, many people thought that a "Spirit-filled experience" could only happen at a summer camp, a massive conference, or at a physical altar in a church building. But the truth of Scripture is much bigger than our zip codes.
If you are hungry for more of God, you don't have to wait for a special event. You can experience the power of Pentecost right where you are.
What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
Before we dive into how you can receive, let’s clarify what we are talking about. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a vital part of the Christian walk.
Term | Definition |
Baptism in the Holy Spirit | A distinct experience following salvation where a believer is filled with the Spirit’s power for life and service. |
Initial Physical Evidence | Speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, serving as the first outward sign of the baptism. |
Sanctification | The lifelong process of being set apart for God and becoming more like Jesus in character. |
Spirit-Empowered | Living with a supernatural boldness and ability to witness for Christ and operate in spiritual gifts. |
It is Distinct from Salvation
When you give your life to Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you. You are a new creation! However, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an additional "overflowing" experience. Think of it like this: salvation is having the well within you; Spirit baptism is the well overflowing to water everything around you.

The "Living Room Revival": Why Digital Believers are Seeking More
We are seeing a unique trend in modern faith. While our local community at FA Memphis is vibrant and growing, our global family at Boundless Online Church is proving that the Holy Spirit travels through the airwaves.
Gen Z and Millennials are increasingly looking for authenticity over production. They want a faith that works on a Tuesday morning in their apartment, not just a Sunday morning in a pew. This hunger for a real, tangible connection with God is exactly what the Baptism in the Holy Spirit provides. It is the "fuel" for the Christian life.
How to Prepare Your Heart at Home
If you are ready to seek this experience in your own home, here are the practical steps to position yourself to receive.
1. Ensure Your Foundation is Jesus
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is for believers. Before seeking the "power," make sure you have submitted to the "Person" of Jesus Christ. If you haven't made that decision yet, you can start today by simply asking Jesus to be your Savior and Lord.
2. Understand the Promise
Read Acts 2:38-39: "Repent and be baptized, every one of you... and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call."
Notice that "all who are far off" includes you. It includes your living room in Memphis, your office in Bartlett, or your bedroom on the other side of the world. This is a promise for you.
3. Ardent Expectation
In the Assemblies of God, we use the phrase "ardently expect." This just means having a deep, holy desire. Don't approach this as a "maybe it will happen" moment. Approach it with the confidence that God loves to give good gifts to His children (Luke 11:13).

5 Practical Steps to Receive Right Now
You don't need a special liturgy. You just need a surrendered heart.
Set the Atmosphere: Find a place where you won't be interrupted. Turn off your notifications. You might want to put on some worship music that helps you focus on the Lord.
Focus on Jesus: He is the Baptizer. Don't focus on the "experience" or even on "tongues." Focus on Jesus. Worship Him for who He is.
Ask Specifically: James 4:2 says, "You do not have because you do not ask." Pray a simple prayer: "Father, I ask You in Jesus' name to baptize me in Your Holy Spirit. I need Your power to live for You."
Yield and Surrender: This is the most important part. To be filled with the Spirit, you must empty yourself of your own control. Yield your voice, your mind, and your will to Him.
Speak by Faith: As you worship, you may feel new syllables or sounds rising in your spirit. The Holy Spirit won't force your mouth open; He gives the "utterance," but you do the speaking. By faith, begin to speak out those sounds, trusting that He is filling you.
What Happens Next?
Receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't the finish line; it’s the starting block. The "initial physical evidence" of speaking in tongues is a beautiful sign, but the "ongoing evidence" should be a life that looks more like Jesus.
You should expect:
A New Boldness: You’ll find it easier to talk about Jesus with your friends or coworkers.
A Deeper Love for the Word: The Bible will start to "jump off the page" as the Spirit reveals truth to you.
Increased Sensitivity: You’ll be more aware of the Spirit's prompting to pray for someone or to serve your community.
