Christian Living: Can the Holy Spirit Really Help You Heal? Find Out How We Pray in Memphis

A Message from FA Memphis

Question

Can the Holy Spirit really help you heal today?

Answer

Yes, the Holy Spirit provides genuine healing for the spirit, soul, and body. As the active presence of God on earth, the Holy Spirit works through divine grace to restore health and wholeness. This healing is a gift from God, made available to all believers through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Value

"Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him." , James 5:14-15 (KJV)

"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." , Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you..." , Acts 1:8 (KJV)

I often hear people ask if the stories we read in the New Testament, the blind seeing, the lame walking, the broken hearts being mended, are still "active" today. The answer is a resounding yes. When we talk about the Holy Spirit, we aren't talking about a vague energy or a fleeting emotion. We are talking about the third person of the Trinity, the Comforter whom Jesus promised would remain with us.

Healing through the Holy Spirit isn't just about physical recovery, though that is a vital part of it. It’s about a total restoration of the person. Sometimes we need a physical miracle; other times, we need the Holy Spirit to reach into the deep, hidden corners of our minds and heal the trauma or bitterness that has taken root. Divine healing is the "children's bread," meaning it is a fundamental provision for those who follow Him.

Sunday Saints: A Legacy of Faith and Healing

Since today is Sunday, I want to take a moment to look back at one of our Protestant heroes who walked in this power. Smith Wigglesworth, often called the "Apostle of Faith," was a plumber-turned-evangelist who was instrumental in the early Pentecostal movement. He didn't have a formal education, but he had an unshakable hunger for the Holy Spirit.

Wigglesworth was known for his absolute conviction that the Word of God was true. He believed that the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lived inside him, and he acted on that belief. Thousands were healed through his ministry because he refused to believe that God’s power had diminished over time. He famously said, "God says it, I believe it, and that settles it." His life serves as a reminder that the Holy Spirit doesn't need a PhD; He needs a willing heart and a person who will take God at His word.

The Guardrails of Truth

When we dive into topics like divine healing and Holy Spirit Baptism, it is easy for things to get confusing or for people to wander into "fringe" ideas. This is why we lean so heavily on our doctrinal foundations. Our Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. These guardrails keep us safe, ensuring that our experiences always align with the Bible.

We believe that divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. It isn't an "extra" or a "bonus." Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers. We also believe in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, which is a distinct experience from salvation. This baptism gives us the power to witness and the "spiritual equipment" necessary to live a life that reflects Jesus. When we pray for healing, we aren't trying to twist God’s arm; we are standing on the legal ground purchased by Jesus at the cross.

How We Pray for Healing

You might wonder what this looks like in practice. It isn't about fancy words or loud shouting. It's about a conversation with a Father who loves you. When we pray for someone, we often use the biblical model of laying on of hands and anointing with oil, symbolizing the presence and the "smear" of the Holy Spirit’s power.

But the Holy Spirit also heals through our daily surrender. Sometimes healing is instantaneous, a sudden miracle that leaves doctors scratching their heads. Other times, it is a process, where the Spirit leads us to better habits, forgiveness of others, and a peaceful mind. Never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God, that is the state the Spirit wants to bring you into.

Protecting Your Mind and Spirit

In our journey toward healing, what we consume matters. Our spiritual health is often tied to our "digital diet." If we are seeking peace but filling our minds with content that promotes anxiety or sin, we are fighting against the work of the Holy Spirit. I always recommend using tools like VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way” to ensure the media in your home is clean and family-safe. For those looking to protect their family's online journey, services like Bark and Covenant Eyes are excellent for accountability and safety. Healing is easier to maintain when we create an environment where the Spirit feels at home.

Practical Steps to Seek Healing

If you are struggling today, I want to encourage you to take these steps:

1. **Acknowledge the Source:** Recognize that Jesus is the Healer. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas of your life, physical or emotional, that need His touch.

2. **Immerse Yourself in the Word:** Read the stories of healing in the Gospels. Let them build your faith. Remember, God is no respecter of persons; what He did for them, He can do for you.

3. **Ask for the Baptism:** If you haven't experienced the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, simply ask. Luke 11:13 tells us that the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.

4. **Find Community:** You weren't meant to carry your burdens alone. Whether you are homebound, unchurched, or a global seeker, find a community that believes in the power of prayer.

A Prayer for Wholeness

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the person reading this right now. I ask that the Holy Spirit would rest upon them with a tangible sense of peace. Lord, for every physical ailment, I pray for Your restorative touch. For every emotional wound, I pray for Your soothing comfort. Grant them the strength to believe Your promises and the courage to walk in the power of Your Spirit. Let them feel never forgotten and never alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
