Christian Living: Does God Really Care About My Financial Stress? 5 Steps to Finding Biblical Peace in the 901.

Life in Memphis is fast-paced. Whether you’re navigating the morning traffic on I-40, heading to a shift in Cordova, or raising a family in the heart of Bartlett, there is a common weight many of us carry: the "901 hustle." But sometimes, that hustle feels like it’s not enough. When the bills pile up, the rent increases, and the grocery budget stretches thinner than a Memphis summer breeze, it’s natural to feel a sense of drowning. In those quiet, stressful moments staring at a bank app or a stack of mail, a deep question often surfaces: Does God really care about my financial stress?

Does God really care about my financial stress?

Yes. God cares deeply about your needs and your anxiety. He isn’t distant from your bills; He invites you to seek His Kingdom first, promising to provide your "daily bread" as you trust Him as your ultimate Source and faithful Provider.

Moving From Scarcity to Stewardship

It is easy to believe the lie that God is only interested in our "spiritual" lives, our prayers, our worship songs, or our Bible reading. But the Bible tells a different story. God is the Creator of all things, including the resources we use to survive and thrive.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that God is our Jehovah Jireh, The Lord Our Provider. This isn’t just a nice sentiment for a Sunday morning; it’s a reality for a Tuesday afternoon when you’re wondering how to cover the utility bill.

What Scripture Says About Your Provision

The Bible is surprisingly practical when it comes to money. Jesus spent a significant amount of His teaching time talking about stewardship and our hearts' relationship with wealth.

  • Matthew 6:31-33:"So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

  • Philippians 4:19:"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."

  • 1 Peter 5:7:"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

When we look at these verses, we see a Father who "knows you need them." He isn't surprised by the inflation in the 901 or the sudden car repair. He sees you.

5 Steps to Finding Biblical Peace in Your Finances

Transitioning from a state of panic to a state of peace doesn’t usually happen overnight, but it does happen through intentional, faith-filled steps. Here is how you can begin to align your finances with God’s heart right here in Memphis or wherever you are joining us from online.

1. Be Brutally Honest with God (and Yourself)

Prayer is often our last resort, but it should be our first response. Before you try to "math" your way out of the stress, bring the numbers to God. Pastor Tom Lindberg often reminds us that "God sees where you are, He knows where you need to be, and He has the plan and the power to get you there."

Start by admitting your fear. Tell Him about the specific debt, the lack of income, or the mounting pressure. This act of surrender shifts the burden from your shoulders to His.

2. Practice the "Order of Worship" in Your Budget

In our church family, we teach a simple but profound order for financial management: Give, Save, Spend.

  • Give First: Tithing isn’t about God needing your money; it’s about your heart needing to know that money isn't your master. By giving the first 10% back to God’s work, you acknowledge He is the owner of 100%.

  • Save Second: Proverbial wisdom tells us to "go to the ant" and save for the future. Building a small emergency fund creates a "peace buffer" for when life happens.

  • Spend Wisely: After honoring God and your future self, manage the rest with discipline.

3. Seek Clarity over Chaos

You cannot manage what you do not measure. One of the greatest killers of peace is the "unknown." Take a Saturday morning, grab a coffee, and list every single expense.

Financial Pillar

Biblical Principle

Practical Action

Ownership

Psalm 24:1 - God owns it all.

Treat every dollar as a resource managed for Him.

Generosity

Malachi 3:10 - Test God's faithfulness.

Set up a recurring tithe or gift to your local church.

Wisdom

Proverbs 27:23 - Know your "flocks."

Use a simple budget app or notebook to track spending.

4. Cultivate Contentment in a "More" Culture

We live in a world (and a city) that constantly tells us we need more to be happy. But biblical peace is found in contentment. Contentment isn't laziness; it's the realization that your joy isn't tied to your "stuff."

  • Action Step: Audit your "wants" vs. "needs." In the 901, it’s easy to get caught up in the comparison game. Remember, your worth is found in Christ, not your zip code or your car model.

5. Walk with a Community

Financial stress thrives in isolation. When we keep our struggles secret, they grow. Whether you are part of a local small group at FA Memphis or connecting through our Boundless Online Church community, you need people to pray with you and offer godly counsel.

Common Misconceptions About Faith and Money

To find true peace, we have to clear away the cultural clutter that often gets mixed in with theology.

  • Misconception: "If I have financial stress, I must lack faith."

  • Misconception: "God only cares about my soul, not my bank account."

  • Misconception: "Tithing is a 'payment' for a miracle."

Definition Blocks for Your Journey

Stewardship: The biblical realization that we do not own our lives, talents, or money. Instead, we are managers (stewards) of what belongs to God.

Provision: The act of God meeting our needs (not necessarily our greeds) according to His wisdom and timing.

Contentment: A state of heart that is satisfied with God's current provision while trusting Him for the future.
