Christian Living: Faith on the Plate – Understanding the Biblical Eating Trend

The "biblical eating" trend focuses on viewing nutrition through the lens of Christian stewardship, emphasizing whole, minimally processed foods that honor God’s design. By treating the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), believers align their health habits with Scripture, finding that wise food choices can support spiritual vitality and complement faith in divine healing.
In the 901, we know a thing or two about good food. From the smoky aroma of world-class BBQ to the soul-warming comfort of a family potluck, food is the language of our community. But lately, a new conversation has been simmering on the stove, one that goes beyond just what tastes good and dives into what is good for the bodies God gave us.
You may have seen the "biblical eating" trend popping up on your social media feeds or heard it discussed in your small groups. It’s a movement that asks a powerful question: How can we honor God with our plates? If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the endless cycle of diet fads, you aren't alone. Today, we’re stepping away from the noise to look at how nutrition is actually a form of stewardship and how caring for our "temples" is a vital part of our walk with Jesus.
What is the 'Biblical Eating' Trend?
At its heart, the biblical eating trend isn't about a restrictive new law or a "magic" weight-loss plan. Instead, it’s a return to the basics of how God designed food to work. Advocates of this approach, such as those emphasizing real food and scriptural guidance, suggest that the closer we get to the "unprocessed" gifts of the earth, the better we function.
Key elements often include:
Minimizing Ultra-Processed Foods: Swapping out laboratory-engineered snacks for items found in nature.
The Seven Foods of the Promised Land: Drawing inspiration from Deuteronomy 8:8, which mentions wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and honey.
Mindful Moderation: Moving away from gluttony or emotional eating and moving toward food as fuel and fellowship.
Rhythms of Fasting: Using periods of abstinence from food to focus more deeply on prayer and spiritual clarity.

Stewardship of the Temple
In Memphis and beyond, we are a people of deep faith. We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, but sometimes we forget where that Spirit lives. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."
When we talk about "stewardship," we often think about our money or our time. But our health is perhaps the most fundamental resource we’ve been given to steward. When we are physically drained, chronically ill from preventable habits, or mentally clouded by poor nutrition, it becomes harder to serve our families, our neighbors, and our church.
Biblical eating isn't about being "perfect" or achieving a certain look; it’s about making sure the "temple" is well-maintained so we can be ready for whatever work God calls us to do.
Nutrition and Divine Healing: A Sacred Partnership
As a community aligned with the Assemblies of God, we hold firmly to Fundamental Truth 12: Divine Healing. We believe that "divine healing is an integral part of the gospel" and that "deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement." We pray for the sick with confidence, knowing that Jesus is our Healer.
However, faith for healing and wise stewardship of health are not at odds, they are partners.
Taking care of the body is a way of cooperating with God’s design. While we trust Him for the miraculous, we also recognize that He has given us the wisdom to make choices that prevent harm. We don't pray for God to heal our lungs while we continue to smoke, and in the same vein, we shouldn't neglect our nutritional needs while asking for a miracle of energy and vitality.
By aligning our habits with biblical wisdom, we create an environment where health can thrive, all while keeping our eyes fixed on the Great Physician for the things only He can do.

Practical Ways to Honor God with Your Health
If you’re feeling inspired to start your own journey of "faith on the plate," you don't have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Remember, you are seen and loved right where you are. Here are a few practical steps to begin:
Start with Gratitude: Before you take a bite, stop and truly thank God for the nourishment. This simple act of mindful prayer shifts our focus from "consuming" to "receiving."
Choose "One Ingredient" Foods: When you’re at the grocery store, look for foods that don't need a label. An apple is an apple. A sweet potato is a sweet potato. These are the "real foods" that often provide the most direct nourishment.
Hydrate with Intent: Our bodies are mostly water. Often, when we feel fatigued or reach for a sugary snack, we’re actually just thirsty. Carry a water bottle as a reminder that Jesus is the Living Water, and our physical bodies need the literal stuff to stay clear-headed.
Eat in Community: Food was meant for fellowship. When we eat with others, we tend to eat more slowly and enjoy the conversation, which is good for our digestion and our souls.
A Prayer for Your Wellness Journey
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of this body. Forgive me for the times I have neglected it or treated it poorly. Today, I ask for Your wisdom as I make choices about what I eat and how I live. Help me to see my health as a way to honor You. I pray for Your healing touch where there is pain, and Your strength where there is weakness. Let my life be a reflection of Your goodness, from my heart to my plate. Amen.
