Christian Living: Feeling Stressed and Overwhelmed? 3 Biblical Steps to Finding Peace That Actually Works

You weren’t designed to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, yet somehow, it feels like you’re doing exactly that.

To find peace when you are stressed and overwhelmed, you must pray instead of panic (Philippians 4:6-7), exchange your burdens for Christ’s rest (Matthew 11:28-30), and be still to remember who God is (Psalm 46:10). This biblical pattern shifts your focus from your problems to God’s sovereignty.

The Weight We Weren't Meant to Carry

Life in the 901, and everywhere else, can feel like a non-stop treadmill. Between work deadlines, family needs, and the constant hum of digital noise, "overwhelmed" has become the default setting for many of us. We often try to manage this stress by working harder or numbing out, but these are temporary bandages on a soul-level wound.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that the Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Guide. Peace isn't just the absence of trouble; it is the presence of a Person. When we align our lives with Scripture, we tap into a peace that doesn't make sense to the world but makes all the difference to our hearts.

Step 1: Pray Instead of Panic (Philippians 4:6-7)

The first reaction to a stressful situation is often a racing heart and a "what if" internal monologue. The Apostle Paul gives us a different command: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

How to do it:

  • Name the stressor: Don't be vague. Tell God exactly what is bothering you.

  • Add thanksgiving: This isn't about being "fake happy." It’s about reminding your soul of what God has already done. Gratitude shifts your perspective from what you lack to what God provides.

  • The Promise: When you do this, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your heart. Think of it as a spiritual sentry standing at the door of your mind.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation... present your requests to God. - Philippians 4:6
Definition: Peace (Biblical Shalom) In the Bible, peace is more than just quiet. It is Shalom, a state of wholeness, safety, and prosperity in one's soul. It is the result of being in a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Step 2: Exchange Your Burdens for His Rest (Matthew 11:28-30)

Many of us are stressed because we are trying to control things that belong to God. Jesus offers a famous trade: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

He doesn't just say "stop working." He says, "Take my yoke upon you." A yoke was a wooden beam used to pair two oxen together so they could pull a load. When we take Jesus' yoke, we aren't pulling the load alone; He is doing the heavy lifting.

How to do it:

  • Surrender Control: Identify one area where you are trying to be "God" (trying to control someone else's choices or the outcome of a situation) and consciously hand it over.

  • Learn His Rhythm: Stress often comes from living at a pace God never intended. Spending time in prayer and worship helps you find His "easy" pace.

Step 3: Be Still and Remember (Psalm 46:10)

Our culture prizes "doing," but God often prizes "being." Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

In the original Hebrew, "be still" can be translated as "let go" or "cease striving." It’s a command to drop your weapons and stop fighting the battle in your own strength.

How to do it:

  • Create a "Stillness Slot": Even five minutes of silence before God can reset your nervous system.

  • Refocus on Sovereignty: Remind yourself that God is on the throne. He is not stressed. He is not surprised by your situation. He is the same God who parted the sea and moved mountains.

Be still, and know that I am God. - Psalm 46:10
