Christian Living: Feeling Stuck? 5 Steps to Mature in Your Faith During Hard Seasons

Ever feel like your faith is stuck in a Memphis humidity? You know that feeling, where the air is so heavy you can almost lean against it, and moving even a few feet feels like a marathon. You’re doing the "right" things. You’re praying when you can, you’re scrolling through a verse of the day, and you might even have a worship playlist going in the background.
But inside? It feels like the dial hasn’t moved in months. Maybe years.
You’re not alone in that heat. Spiritual "stuckness" is one of the most common experiences in the Christian walk, especially when life gets hard. Whether it’s a health scare, a career transition that’s gone sideways, or just the exhaustion of being a caregiver or a shift worker, hard seasons have a way of making us feel like God has hit the pause button on our growth.
But here is the direct truth: Maturity isn't the absence of trouble; it's how we walk through it. In fact, the hardest seasons of your life are often the ones where God is doing His most intense work.
If you feel stuck today, it might not be because you’ve stopped growing. It might be because you’re in the middle of a "refining fire," and God is preparing you for a level of maturity you couldn't reach in the easy times.
1. Accept the Refining Fire
In Memphis, we know a thing or two about heat. But there’s a difference between the heat that just makes you sweat and the heat that changes the very nature of what it touches. The Bible often calls this the "refining fire."
Zechariah 13:9 says, "I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘These are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’"
When we go through a hard season, our first instinct is usually to pray for the fire to go out. We want the "cool breeze" of a solution, a miracle, or a way out. That’s a human response, and it’s okay to ask for relief. But spiritual maturity begins when we stop asking, "How do I get out of this?" and start asking, "Lord, what are You refining in me?"
Think of a silversmith. He doesn't put the silver in the fire to destroy it; he puts it there to remove the impurities (the dross) that keep the metal from shining. He knows the process is complete when he can see his own reflection in the silver. God is doing the same with you. He is using the heat of your circumstances to burn away pride, self-reliance, and fear, until the character of Jesus is what people see when they look at you.

2. No Bowing Down: Drawing Your Line in the Sand
There is a famous story in Daniel chapter 3 about three young men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were living in a culture that demanded they bow down to an idol. When they refused, they were thrown into a literal furnace.
Their response to the King is one of the most mature statements of faith in the entire Bible: "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it... But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up" (Daniel 3:17-18).
This is the "No Bowing Down" principle. Maturity is deciding before the fire gets hot that you aren't going to compromise your faith to find temporary comfort.
In a hard season, the "idols" we are tempted to bow to aren't usually golden statues. Instead, we’re tempted to bow to:
Bitterness: Letting a hurt define how we treat others.
Numbing: Turning to substances, endless scrolling, or other escapes to avoid the pain.
Control: Trying to manipulate people or situations because we don't trust God’s timing.
Refusing to bow means saying, "God, even if this situation doesn't change today, I will still trust You. I will still be honest. I will still be kind." When you draw that line, your faith moves from a feeling to a conviction. That is maturity.

3. Consistency Over Intensity
We live in a world that loves "big moments", big conferences, big emotions, big breakthroughs. But spiritual maturity is rarely built in a single weekend. It’s built in the quiet, mundane, 2:00 AM moments when you decide to trust God one more time.
In Memphis, the Mississippi River doesn't change course overnight. It’s the steady, consistent flow of water over years that carves the landscape. Your spiritual life works the same way.
If you want to mature in a hard season, stop waiting for a "lightning bolt" of inspiration. Instead, lean into small, consistent rhythms:
The Word: You don't need to read five chapters a day. Try reading one Psalm before you start your shift. Let the "Boundless Bible Study Podcast" play while you’re driving or doing chores. You can find these resources and more at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.
Honest Prayer: God can handle your frustration. Maturity is moving from "polite prayer" to "honest prayer." Tell Him you’re tired. Tell Him you feel stuck.
When you stay consistent in the Word, you are building a foundation that can’t be shaken by the wind and waves of life (Matthew 7:24-25).
4. Finding Community in the Furnace
One of the most beautiful details in the story of the fiery furnace is that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego weren't alone. They were together. And then, a "fourth man" appeared in the fire with them, someone who looked like the Son of God.
Isolation is the enemy of maturity. When we feel stuck, we tend to pull away. We stop checking in, we stop attending (even online), and we go into "survival mode" alone. But you were never meant to stand in the fire by yourself.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that community isn't limited by walls or geography. Whether you are at home in Memphis, in a hospital bed, or working a night shift, you can find a place to belong.
Virtual Small Groups: Growth happens in circles, not just rows. Finding a group of people who know your name and your struggle is a catalyst for maturity.
Real-Time Prayer: Sometimes you just need someone to hold up your arms when you're too tired to pray for yourself. You can connect with our prayer team 24/7 at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.
When we walk together, we remind each other that the "fourth man", Jesus, is right there in the fire with us.

5. Moving Toward Ministry: Turning Pain into Purpose
The final step of maturity is when you stop looking at your fire as a prison and start looking at it as a platform.
In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Paul writes that God "comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."
You are maturing when you start using what you’ve learned in your hard season to help someone else.
Did you survive a season of deep anxiety? Now you can pray for someone else who is struggling to breathe.
Did you navigate a difficult recovery journey? Your story might be the hope someone else needs to take the first step.
Maturity isn't about being "perfect." It's about being "useful" in the hands of God. When you take your focus off your own pain and look for ways to serve, the "stuck" feeling begins to lift. You realize that God hasn't wasted a single tear. He’s been preparing you to be a "spiritual first responder" for someone else.

A Prayer for the Person in the Fire
If you’re reading this and you feel the heat of the fire today, would you pray this with me?
Lord, I thank You that I am not alone. Even when I feel stuck, I trust that You are moving. Thank You for the refining fire. Burn away the things in me that don't look like Jesus. Give me the strength to stand tall and the courage to say "no bowing down" to fear or bitterness. Help me to find my community and use my life to bless someone else. I believe the fourth man is in the fire with me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
