Christian Living: How Can I Be a Light for Jesus in My High School?

You can be a light for Jesus in high school by living with integrity, choosing media that honors God, and showing genuine kindness. By setting boundaries on your screen time and choosing life-giving friendships, your life becomes a powerful reflection of Christ’s love in your community.

High school can feel like a survival movie. Between the pressure to fit in, the constant buzz of social media, and the "darkness" that seems to hang over the hallways, it’s easy to feel like your faith is just a quiet flicker. You walk through the doors at school in Memphis or Cordova, and suddenly, the things you talked about in youth group on Sunday feel a million miles away.

But here’s the reality: you aren't just a student. You are a lampstand.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16:

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Being a light doesn't mean you have to stand on a cafeteria table and preach with a megaphone. It means living in a way that makes people wonder why you’re different. It means being the one who doesn't join in on the gossip, the one who actually likes their parents, and the one who isn't a slave to their smartphone.

The Battle for Your Attention: Media and Manipulation

Did you know that the average teen spends nearly nine hours a day on entertainment screens? That’s not just "passing time." That is nine hours of being told what to wear, how to think, who to hate, and what "happiness" looks like.

The media you consume, the music in your AirPods, the streamers you watch on Twitch, the "for you" page on TikTok, isn't neutral. It’s designed to manipulate your desires. The reality that media sells you is often a lie: that you aren't enough, that you need more "likes" to be valuable, or that "bad" behavior is actually just "living your best life."

When you fill your mind with media that celebrates things God calls harmful, it dims your light. It’s hard to reflect the purity of Christ when your brain is saturated with lyrics that degrade people or games that celebrate darkness.

Screen Addiction and Getting Smart with Your Devices

Let’s get real about the "black mirror" in your pocket. Screen addiction is real. When you feel anxious because your battery is at 5%, or you can’t go ten minutes without checking for a notification, the device has started to own you.

Being a light means having self-control, a fruit of the Spirit. If you want to be different in your high school, start by being the person who can actually look someone in the eye because you aren't staring at a screen.

Tools to Take Back Control

You don't have to be a victim of an algorithm. Use the tools built into your phone to protect your heart:

  • Apple Users: Go to Settings > Screen Time. Set "App Limits" for social media and use "Downtime" to lock your phone an hour before bed.

  • Android Users: Go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing. Use "Focus Mode" during study hours and "Bedtime Mode" to fade the screen to grayscale at night.

  • The "One-Tap" Rule: If you wouldn't want a mentor from First Assembly Memphis or a pastor from Boundless Online Church to see what's on your screen, tap it closed.

The "Friend Filter": Why Your Circle Matters

You’ve probably heard it a thousand times: "Bad company corrupts good character." But in high school, this is life or death for your faith. If your "friends" are constantly pressuring you to compromise, they aren't friends, they’re anchors.

Having good, Godly friends is like having a support team for your soul. When you're facing a dark day at a school in Bartlett or Arlington, you need people who will remind you of who you are in Christ, not people who will help you lose yourself.

Practical Ways to Be a Light This Week

  1. The "Lobby" Greeting: Be the person who says "Hey" to the kid sitting alone. It’s a small move that carries the weight of the Gospel.

  2. Digital Integrity: Stop reposting things that are mean, suggestive, or divisive. Let your social media profile be a place of peace.

  3. The Homework Helper: Show Christ by your work ethic. Don’t cheat, and help others who are struggling with that math unit.

  4. Prayer Walks: As you walk through the hallways between classes, silently pray for the people you pass. You don't have to say a word for God to move.

Your Life is an Invitation

Being a light isn't about being perfect. It’s about being different because you’ve been changed by Jesus. When you mess up, and you will, be the first to apologize. That kind of humility is a massive light in a culture where everyone is trying to prove they are right.

Whether you are in the 901 area or joining us from the other side of the globe, remember that you are part of a bigger family. You aren't alone in that hallway.

Takeaway Tip: Choose one "tech-free" hour every day after school to pray, read, or just be present. Watch how your anxiety drops and your light brightens.
