Christian Living: How Can I Experience the Holy Spirit’s Power Before My Morning Coffee? (Daily Faith Launch)

You can experience the Holy Spirit’s power by practicing "First Word" prayer, offering your first conscious thoughts to God before checking your phone or drinking coffee. By surrendering your day, meditating on Scripture, and praying in the Spirit, you invite His supernatural peace and direction into your morning.

Starting Your Day with the "First Word"

Before the alarm goes off or the smell of coffee fills your home in Memphis, there is a moment of pure potential. This is the "First Word" moment. For many of us, our first word is often a groan, a scroll through social media, or a mental list of everything that could go wrong today. But what if your first word was a welcome?

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that the Holy Spirit isn't just a theological concept, He is a person, an Advocate, and a source of real, tangible power. Experiencing that power doesn't require a mountain-top retreat; it starts in the quiet of your own living room, perhaps even before you’ve had your first sip of caffeine.

Why the Morning Matters for Your Spirit

The Bible tells us that God's mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). In Memphis, we see this every time the sun rises over the Mississippi River, painting the sky in golds and oranges. It’s a daily reset. When you intentionally connect with the Holy Spirit first, you aren't just "doing a devotion", you are aligning your spiritual compass. You are moving from a state of self-reliance to Spirit-dependence.

Understanding the Language of the Spirit

Before we dive into the "how," let’s clarify what we mean by these spiritual experiences. At First Assembly Memphis, we lean into the biblical foundations of a Spirit-filled life.

The Power of 5: Your Spirit-Filled Morning Routine

If you want to move past a "dry" morning routine and into an empowered one, try these five practical steps. You don’t need an hour; even fifteen minutes of focused intention can shift the atmosphere of your entire day.

  1. Wake and Welcome: As soon as your eyes open, say it out loud: "Holy Spirit, You are welcome here. I yield my day to You." This simple act of surrender breaks the cycle of morning anxiety.

  2. Confess and Clear: Sin and bitterness can quench the Spirit’s work. Spend two minutes asking God to search your heart. If you’re holding onto a grudge against a coworker or a family member, let it go right there in the quiet.

  3. Worship and Word: Read a short passage from the New Testament. Don't just read for information; ask the Spirit for illumination. Then, hum or sing a chorus of praise. Worship invites the presence of God into your physical space.

  4. Pray in the Spirit: If you are Spirit-baptized, use your prayer language (tongues). It builds you up and allows the Spirit to intercede through you in ways your mind can't fully grasp. If not, pray simple, heart-felt prayers of petition and thanks.

  5. Listen and Obey: The Spirit often speaks in a "still, small voice." Before you get up, listen for a name or a task. Maybe it’s a nudge to call a friend or to handle a business meeting with extra grace.

Life Takeaway: Transformation Over Routine

The goal of a morning faith launch isn't to check a box on a "Good Christian" to-do list. The goal is transformation. When you experience the Spirit's power at 6:00 AM, you carry that power into your 9:00 AM meeting, your 12:00 PM lunch, and your 5:00 PM commute. You become a "Pentecostal lighthouse" in the 901 and beyond, a person whose life reflects the fruit and power of God.

A New Day in the 901

As you step out into the Memphis humidity or log onto your first video call of the day, remember that you are not alone. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is living in you. He is ready to give you wisdom when you lack it, strength when you’re tired, and peace that passes all understanding.
