Christian Living: How Can I Find Peace When My Life Feels Like a Mess?

You find biblical peace in a messy life not by fixing every problem, but by surrendering your chaos to God’s grace and trusting His presence. True peace, Jehovah Shalom, is a gift from the Holy Spirit that guards your heart even when your external circumstances remain overwhelming and unresolved.

Sometimes, life in the 901 feels like a high-speed chase where you’re the one being pursued. Whether it’s the pressure of a job in Cordova, family tension at home, or the internal weight of anxiety that just won’t lift, we’ve all had those moments where we look at our lives and think, “This is an absolute mess.”

Maybe the mess is a result of your own choices, a struggle with addiction or a series of bad decisions. Or maybe the mess was handed to you, a health diagnosis, a sudden loss, or a broken relationship. Regardless of how the chaos started, the question remains: How do I find peace when nothing around me is peaceful?

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that peace isn’t the absence of a storm; it’s the presence of a Person. That person is Jesus Christ.

The Memphis Miracle: Peace Amidst Total Chaos

In our church family, we’ve seen what this looks like in real life. Not long ago, a lady in our community reached out with a heart-wrenching update. She described her life as "total chaos." Her job was under attack, her family was struggling, and to top it off, she had just received a life-debilitating medical diagnosis.

By every worldly standard, she should have been falling apart. Yet, she shared something unexplainable: "I have a peace from God that I just cannot explain."

This is what the Bible calls the "peace that passes all understanding" (Philippians 4:7). It doesn’t make sense to the world because the world thinks peace is a result of a clean house, a full bank account, and a healthy body. But biblical peace is different. It is a divine anchor. It is Jehovah Shalom, The Lord is Peace.

Sin vs. Grace: Understanding the Root of the Chaos

To find true peace, we have to address the "mess" at its root. In many cases, the chaos we feel is a symptom of the brokenness of our world.

Concept

The Impact on Your Peace

The Solution in Christ

Sin

Creates separation from God, leading to guilt, shame, and internal unrest.

Repentance: Turning away from the mess and toward God's light.

Anxiety

A result of trying to control things that only God can handle.

Surrender: Giving the "steering wheel" of your life back to Jesus.

Grace

The unearned favor of God that covers our mistakes and failures.

Justification: Being made right in God's sight through faith, not works.

Definition Block: Grace Grace is God’s unmerited favor. It is getting what we do not deserve (salvation and peace) and not getting what we do deserve (judgment for our sins). It is the bridge between our mess and His majesty.

When we live in sin, which simply means missing the mark of God’s best for us, our lives naturally become turbulent. Sin is like sand in the gears of a machine; it causes friction, heat, and eventual breakdown. Grace, however, is the divine lubricant. It doesn’t necessarily remove the gears, but it allows them to function in harmony with God’s purpose.

Practical Steps to Reclaim Your Peace

If you are feeling overwhelmed today, here is a practical "blueprint" to help you move from chaos to Christ-centered calm.

1. Turn Your Worry Into Worship

Anxiety and worship cannot inhabit the same space at the same time. When you feel the "mess" closing in, stop and name who God is. Use the names of God we treasure at FA Memphis:

  • Jehovah Jireh: My Provider.

  • Jehovah Rapha: My Healer.

  • Jehovah Shalom: My Peace.

2. The 2/3 Rule of Prayer

One of our favorite pastoral insights is the 2/3 rule: Spend two-thirds of your prayer time focused on the promises of God and only one-third focused on your problems. If you spend all your time talking to God about the mess, you leave the prayer closet thinking about the mess. If you spend most of your time talking about His promises, you leave thinking about His power.

3. Anchor Yourself in Scripture

Your feelings are like the Memphis weather, they change every ten minutes. Scripture is the bedrock. When your mind spirals with "worst-case scenarios," replace those thoughts with the truth of Philippians 4:8. Think on things that are true, noble, right, pure, and lovely.

Definition Block: Sanctification Sanctification is the ongoing process of being set apart for God’s use and becoming more like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the journey of moving from the "mess" of our old nature into the "peace" of our new life in Christ.

4. Don’t Walk Alone

Chaos loves isolation. If your life is a mess, the enemy wants you to stay hidden in shame. But healing happens in community. Whether you join us in person at our Memphis campus or connect with our global family at Boundless Online Church, finding a "circle" of believers to carry your burdens is essential for lasting peace.

Moving From Justification to Peace

The Bible says, "Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us" (Romans 5:1).

Definition Block: Justification Justification is a legal act of God where He declares a sinner righteous because of their faith in Jesus Christ. It means "just as if I’d" never sinned. It is the foundation of our peace with God.

You don't have to clean up the mess before you come to God. In fact, you can't. You come to Him in the mess, and His grace justifies you. Once you are "right" with God, the internal war ends. The "mess" might still be on your desk or in your bank account, but it is no longer in your soul.

Takeaway: Your Mess is a Canvas

In the hands of a master artist, a messy palette of mismatched colors can become a masterpiece. God is the Master Artist. He doesn't waste your pain, your anxiety, or your struggle. He uses the "mess" to show the world the power of His grace.
