Christian Living: How Do I Navigate Today’s Culture Without Compromising My Pentecostal Faith?

Navigating today’s culture requires grounding your identity in Christ rather than current trends. By prioritizing Scripture, seeking the Holy Spirit’s daily guidance, and staying connected to a Bible-believing community, you can engage with the world effectively without losing your spiritual convictions.
It feels like the world is moving faster than ever, doesn't it? Whether you’re scrolling through your feed in Cordova, grabbin’ coffee in Midtown, or joining us online from across the globe, the pressure to "fit in" is a constant hum in the background. But as Pentecostal believers, we aren’t called to just blend into the scenery. We’re called to be the light in the 901 and beyond.
The big question we all face at some point is: How do I live in this world without letting the world live in me?
The Pulse Test: Purpose, Perspective, and Priorities
To know where you stand, you have to know what you’re measuring against. In a powerful teaching from our history here at First Assembly Memphis, Pastor Tom Lindberg shared a "pulse test" for worldliness. Just like you’d check your heart rate after a jog, you need to check your spiritual vitals.
He asked three penetrating questions to see if we’ve accidentally started listening to the "counsel of the ungodly":
Do you have the same purpose as the world? (Is your main goal just comfort, wealth, or fame?)
Do you have the same perspective as the world? (Do you see people and problems through a lens of fear and cynicism, or through the lens of eternity?)
Do you have the same priorities as the world? (What gets your best time, your best energy, and your first dollar?)
If your answers look exactly like those of someone who doesn't follow Jesus, it might be time to recalibrate.
Definition: Sanctification Sanctification is the lifelong process, empowered by the Holy Spirit, of being set apart from sin and dedicated to God’s purposes. It’s not about being "perfect," but about becoming more like Jesus every single day.
Understanding the Battleground

We often talk about "spiritual warfare" like it’s a movie plot, but in 2026, the battle is usually fought in the quiet moments. It’s fought in the comments section, in the breakroom at work, and in what we choose to watch before bed.
The devil doesn't always show up with a pitchfork; sometimes he shows up as a "standard" cultural opinion that slowly erodes your faith. As an Assemblies of God-aligned community, we believe the Bible is our final authority. When culture says "you do you," the Bible says "deny yourself and follow Him."
The Cultural Claim | The Biblical Truth | Your Pentecostal Response |
"Truth is relative to your feelings." | "Your word is a lamp to my feet." (Psalm 119:105) | I anchor my life in the unchanging Word of God. |
"Happiness is the ultimate goal." | "The joy of the Lord is my strength." (Nehemiah 8:10) | I pursue holiness, which leads to true, lasting joy. |
"You are enough on your own." | "My grace is sufficient for you." (2 Corinthians 12:9) | I rely on the power of the Holy Spirit every hour. |
5 Practical Ways to Guard Your Faith Without Hiding
You don’t have to move to a cabin in the woods to keep your faith. Jesus actually prayed that the Father would not take us out of the world, but protect us from the evil one (John 17:15). Here’s how you can do that practically:
1. Saturate Your Mind with the Word
If you’re only reading the Bible for five minutes but scrolling social media for five hours, who do you think is winning the "perspective" war? Make Scripture your primary filter. Before you form an opinion on a hot cultural topic, ask: What does the Word say?
2. Perform a "Media Audit"
Entertainment isn't neutral; it’s discipleship. Everything you watch or listen to is teaching your heart to love something. Every few months, take a look at your "inputs." If a show or an influencer makes you feel more cynical, more lustful, or more distant from God, it’s okay to hit the "unfollow" button.
3. Put on the Full Armor Daily
Ephesians 6 isn't a suggestion; it’s a survival guide. As Pentecostals, we believe in the real power of the Holy Spirit. Use that power! Pray for the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and the shield of faith. Ask the Spirit for discernment, the ability to see the "fake news of hell" before it takes root in your heart.
4. Stay Rooted in a Real Community
You were never meant to be a "Lone Ranger" Christian. Whether you’re part of our local family in Memphis at www.famemphis.org or our global family at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org, you need other believers. We need people who can call us out when we’re drifting and lift us up when we’re tired.
5. Be an Ambassador, Not Just a Resident
When you view yourself as an ambassador of Christ, your mindset shifts. You aren't just a "worker" at that warehouse in Memphis; you're a representative of the Kingdom of Heaven stationed there. This perspective changes how you talk, how you work, and how you treat your neighbors.

Facing the Giant of Compromise
One of the biggest traps in today's culture is the "slow fade." It’s rarely one big decision that kills a person’s faith; it’s a thousand tiny compromises. Maybe it’s laughing at a joke that demeans someone, or staying silent when your values are challenged.
Pastor Lindberg reminded us that we must "flee ungodly influences." This doesn't mean we stop loving people, quite the opposite! We love people enough to stay whole so we can actually help them. If you’re drowning, you can’t save anyone else. Stay on the solid ground of Christ.
Definition: Repentance Repentance is more than just feeling sorry; it’s a "change of mind" that leads to a change of direction. It’s turning away from the path of the world and turning toward the path of God.
The Power of a Godly Family in an Ungodly World

For those of you raising kids in the 901 or anywhere else, the stakes feel even higher. You are the primary spiritual leaders of your home. You have the incredible opportunity to show your children that following Jesus isn't a list of "don’ts," but a life of "Better."
Talk about God’s Word while you’re driving down Germantown Parkway. Pray together before school. Show them that your faith isn't just something you do on Sunday mornings, it’s the air you breathe and the way you navigate every cultural wave.
Moving Forward with Hope
The world may seem loud and confusing, but remember this: Jesus has already overcome the world (John 16:33). You aren't fighting for victory; you're fighting from a place of victory. The same Holy Spirit that empowered the early church to turn the world upside down is living inside of you right now.
You don't have to be afraid of culture. You just have to be more in love with Jesus than you are with the world's approval.

Does your life today reflect the priorities of the Kingdom, or the patterns of the world?
