Christian Living: How Do You Know If You're Hearing God's Voice? 5 Signs Every Believer Should Know

"Was that a word from God, or was that just what I wanted to hear?"

How can you be sure when God is speaking to you? Hearing God's voice primarily happens through Scripture illuminated by the Holy Spirit, inner peace, and the counsel of other believers. If a thought aligns with the Bible, brings clarity rather than confusion, and produces spiritual fruit, it is likely the Shepherd’s voice.

Learning how to hear God’s voice is not a mystical secret reserved for a few; it is the natural inheritance of every child of God. Jesus said in John 10:27, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." Yet, in our noisy, high-speed world, that "still, small voice" can feel drowned out by the static of our own thoughts, anxieties, and the constant pings of digital life.

The Struggle: Is It Him or Is It Me?

One of the most common questions we hear at First Assembly Memphis and through our Boundless Online Church community is some version of this: "I felt a prompting, but I'm afraid it was just my own imagination."

It is a valid concern. Our own desires, fears, and even the "prosperity gospel" influences of our culture can sometimes dress up as divine instruction. However, the Bible doesn’t leave us guessing. Just as the young boy Samuel had to be coached by Eli to recognize the voice of the Lord (1 Samuel 3), we also need to develop the "spiritual ears" to discern the divine from the distractions.

Definition Block: Discipleship Discipleship is the lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. It involves learning His Word, obeying His commands, and developing the ability to recognize and respond to His voice in every area of life.

5 Signs You Are Hearing God's Voice

Infographic showing 5 signs you are hearing God: Scripture alignment, inner peace, godly counsel, spiritual fruit, and obedience.

1. It Always Aligns with Scripture

The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible. Therefore, God will never tell you to do something that contradicts what He has already written. If you feel a "leading" to be dishonest, to harbor bitterness, or to step outside of biblical boundaries in your relationships, you can be 100% certain that is not God’s voice. As the Pastor for Boundless Online outreach often says, "God's will is found in God's book."

2. It Is Accompanied by Peace (Even in Correction)

In Colossians 3:15, we are told to "let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." When God speaks, even if He is correcting a sin or calling you to do something difficult, there is a deep-seated "knowing" and a sense of peace that accompanies it. In contrast, the voice of the enemy, or the voice of our own anxiety, is usually characterized by pressure, panic, shame, and confusion.

3. It Is Confirmed by Godly Counsel

God rarely speaks to us in total isolation. In the book of Acts, we see the Holy Spirit speaking to the whole community. If you think you’ve heard from God, especially regarding a major life decision, bring it to mature believers who have walked with the Lord longer than you have.

4. It Produces Spiritual Fruit

Jesus said we would recognize a tree by its fruit. When we truly follow God's voice, the result in our lives should be an increase in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). If a "leading" makes you more arrogant, impatient, or divisive, it’s a sign that you might be listening to the wrong source.

5. It Often Comes as a "Flow" of Spontaneous Thoughts

While some expect an audible thunderclap, God often speaks through what many call "the inner witness." This can feel like a spontaneous flow of thoughts that are focused on Jesus and align with His character. When you are in a posture of prayer and a thought "pops" in that provides a solution you couldn't have thought of on your own, or a scripture you haven't read in months, pay attention.

Practical Steps: The 4 "D" Framework

How do you position yourself to hear more clearly? We use a simple 4-step framework based on Assemblies of God principles:

Step

Action

Why It Matters

Desire

Get hungry for God.

God only feeds those who truly hunger for Him (Matthew 5:6).

Disconnect

Silence the noise.

You can't hear a whisper in a crowded room. Put the phone away.

Discern

Test the message.

The young trust everyone; the wise test the spirit (1 John 4:1).

Do

Act in obedience.

If you won't do the last thing He said, why would He tell you the next?

Biblical Examples to Follow

  • Elijah (1 Kings 19): God wasn't in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. He was in the "gentle whisper." To hear a whisper, you have to be close and you have to be quiet.

  • Samuel (1 Samuel 3): Samuel heard God but didn't recognize the voice at first. He needed Eli's mentorship. Don't be afraid to ask for help in your discipleship journey.

  • Jesus (John 10): Jesus lived in a constant state of hearing the Father. He prioritized getting away to lonely places to pray. If the Son of God needed to disconnect to hear, so do we.

Life Takeaway: Start Small

You don't need to wait for a "burning bush" moment to start hearing God. Start by asking Him small questions throughout your day in Memphis or wherever you are in the world. "Lord, how can I show Your love to this coworker today?" or "What does this scripture mean for my life right now?"

As you practice "plugging in" your spiritual satellite dish, the signal will become clearer. You will begin to see God’s guidance in your business, your parenting, and your local community involvement.

Are you ready to stop guessing and start listening?
