Christian Living: How Does Baseball Ministry Strengthen Families in Memphis?

In the heart of the 901, the crack of a bat and the cheer of a crowd represent more than just a game; they represent a community coming together under the banner of faith, family, and future.

How Does Baseball Ministry Strengthen Families in Memphis?

Baseball ministry at First Assembly Memphis uses the diamond as a classroom for character, teamwork, and Christ-centered leadership. By bridging the gap between Sunday worship and Saturday games, it provides a safe, Spirit-led environment where children ages 4-11 learn biblical values like perseverance and integrity while families build lasting bonds.

For families in Memphis, Cordova, Bartlett, and Arlington, the spring season brings a familiar rhythm: the smell of fresh-cut grass, the search for the misplaced glove, and the excitement of the first T-ball game. But at First Assembly Memphis (FA Memphis), we believe that sports shouldn’t just be another activity on an already crowded calendar. We believe sports can be a ministry, a powerful tool for discipleship and a way to anchor our children in the Word of God while they develop their physical skills.

Whether you are a seasoned "baseball family" or your little one is just starting with T-ball, our Recreational Sports Ministry is designed to meet you where you are. We aren't just playing for the trophy; we are playing for the Kingdom.

The Mission: More Than a Scoreboard

At FA Memphis, our recreational sports programs are built on the foundation of the Assemblies of God doctrine, which emphasizes that every part of our lives, including our recreation, should honor God. When a child steps onto the field at Buckhead Creek, they aren't just learning how to hit a line drive or catch a fly ball. They are learning what it means to be a "missionary in the dugout."

Our coaches are men and women who have been vetted and approved not just for their baseball knowledge, but for their commitment to Christian values. They understand that a strikeout is an opportunity to teach grace, and a home run is an opportunity to teach humility. This intentionality is what sets church-based sports apart from secular leagues. We focus on the "why" behind the "play."

Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

What to Expect: The FA Memphis Baseball Season

Our baseball, T-ball, and girls' softball programs are hosted in partnership with Faith Baptist Church, with all games played at the beautiful Buckhead Creek fields. This collaboration allows us to provide a high-quality experience while maintaining the close-knit, pastoral feel of a local ministry.

Age Divisions & Teams

We believe in age-appropriate development. Your child’s division is determined by their exact age on June 1st of the current year. This ensures that every player is competing alongside peers at a similar developmental stage.

  • Under Age 6 Coed (Ages 4-5): Our T-ball division, where the fundamentals of the game, and the fundamentals of sharing and teamwork, begin.

  • Under Age 8 Boys & Girls (Ages 6-7): Transitioning into more structured play while keeping the focus on fun and basic skills.

  • Under Age 10 Boys & Girls (Ages 8-9): Developing more advanced techniques and understanding the strategic side of the game.

  • Under Age 12 Boys & Girls (Ages 10-11): Preparing older children for higher levels of competition while solidifying their identity in Christ.

Registration and Fees

We strive to keep our ministry accessible for all 901 families. Registration typically opens in early February (February 9 - February 29).

  • New Players: $80 (includes a new uniform).

  • Returning Players: $60 (for those who already have a uniform from a previous season).

Before signing up, we ask all families to review our Recreational Sports Policies to ensure we are all aligned in our mission to honor God on and off the field.

A Theology of the Dugout: Why It Matters

You might wonder, “What does the Assemblies of God believe about sports?” While sports aren't specifically mentioned in our 16 Fundamental Truths, the principle of Sanctification, the lifelong process of being set apart for God, certainly applies.

Sports provide a unique laboratory for sanctification. In the heat of a close game, a child’s true character often comes to the surface. Is there frustration? Is there pride? By addressing these moments through a biblical lens, coaches and parents can help children navigate their emotions in a way that leads to spiritual growth.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. - Colossians 3:23

Definition: Discipleship In the context of sports ministry, discipleship is the intentional process of following Jesus and helping others do the same. It’s about taking the lessons of the Bible and applying them to real-life situations, such as how we treat our teammates, how we handle loss, and how we represent Christ to our community.

Strengthening Memphis Families

One of the greatest benefits of our baseball ministry is the "super-glue" time it provides for families. In a world that is increasingly digital and disconnected, the ballpark remains one of the few places where families sit together, cheer together, and talk.

For parents in the 901, whether you're in Bartlett, Cordova, or Arlington, those car rides to and from practice are precious opportunities for conversation. Our ministry seeks to equip parents to use those moments to talk about faith. When you ask your child, "How did you show the love of Jesus to your teammate today?" you are performing a vital act of family ministry.

Furthermore, our sports program acts as a "front door" for those who might not yet have a church home. We invite you to experience the warmth of FA Memphis through the community of our sports teams. You’ll find that the same spirit of welcome you feel at Buckhead Creek is the same spirit you’ll find in our sanctuary on Sunday mornings.

Character isn’t just built on the field; it’s forged in the heart.

If you are looking for a way to get your kids active while keeping them grounded in the Truth, we invite you to join us for the next season. It’s more than just a league; it’s a family.
