Christian Living: How to Grow Closer to Jesus When Everything Around You Is Falling Apart?
If you feel like you are walking through a furnace right now, you aren't alone, and you aren't forgotten. Spiritual growth doesn't happen when things are easy; it happens when the heat is turned up and you decide to lean into Jesus rather than running away from Him.
The Weight of a World in Chaos
Maybe it’s a health diagnosis that came out of nowhere. Maybe it’s the quiet, heavy tension in your home that feels like it’s about to snap. Or perhaps you’re just looking at the news and feeling that deep, Memphis-rooted grit being tested by a world that seems to be losing its way. When life feels like it is falling apart, the most natural human reaction is to panic, to hide, or to bow down to the pressure of fear.
But what if the very thing that feels like it’s destroying you is actually the tool God is using to refine you?
At www.boundlessonlinechurch.org, we see people every day who are at their breaking point. Whether you are catching this from a hospital room, a breakroom on a night shift, or your living room couch, we want you to know that the fire you are in has a purpose. You aren't being consumed; you are being prepared.
The Theme of the Refining Fire
In the Bible, Peter writes about this very thing. He tells us that our faith is more precious than gold, and just like gold, it must be tested by fire (1 Peter 1:6-7).
Gold doesn't get "clean" by sitting in a cool, dark room. It has to be melted. When the heat goes up, the impurities, the stuff that doesn't belong, rise to the surface so the refiner can skim them away. In our lives, the "heat" of hardship brings our impurities to the surface. It shows us where we’ve been trusting in our bank accounts, our own strength, or our own plans instead of trusting in Jesus.
God isn't a distant observer watching you struggle. He is the Refiner. He knows exactly how much heat you can take, and He is standing right there with you, making sure that what comes out of this season is stronger, purer, and more beautiful than what went into it.

The Courage of "No Bowing Down"
Think about the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3. They were in a literal furnace. The world around them, the government, the culture, the "status quo", was demanding that they bow down to an idol.
The pressure was immense. If they didn't bow, they would burn.
Their response is one of the most powerful statements of spiritual growth in the entire Bible. They told the king, "Our God is able to deliver us... but even if He does not, we will not bow." That is "No Bowing Down" faith. It’s a faith that says my relationship with Jesus isn't dependent on Him making my life easy. It’s a faith that says I will trust Him in the middle of the flames.
The most amazing part of that story isn't just that they survived. It’s that when the king looked into the fire, he didn't see three men; he saw four. And the fourth looked like "a son of the gods."
Jesus meets us in the fire. He doesn't always stop the furnace from being lit, but He promises that when you walk through it, you will not be burned, and the flame will not consume you (Isaiah 43:2). Spiritual growth happens when you stop looking for the exit and start looking for the Fourth Man in the fire with you.
5 Ways to Grow Closer to Jesus Today
If everything is falling apart, here are five practical ways to lean into spiritual growth right now:
Stop Bowing to Fear: Acknowledge your anxiety, but don't let it be your master. When fear tells you that God has abandoned you, remind yourself of His promise: "I am with you always."
Invite the Refiner In: Instead of asking "Why is this happening?", try asking "What are You teaching me, Lord?" Let Him skim away the pride or self-reliance that this trial is bringing to the surface.
Anchor in the Word: When your feelings are screaming, you need the steady voice of Scripture. Read Romans 5:3-5 and James 1:2-4. Remind your soul that endurance is building character, and character is building a hope that will never disappoint you.
Find Your "Even If" Faith: Decide today that you will follow Jesus even if the situation doesn't change tomorrow. This is the ultimate mark of spiritual maturity.
Stay Connected to Community: Isolation is where faith goes to die. Join a virtual small group or reach out for prayer at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org. You weren't meant to carry the weight of a furnace alone.
A Pastoral Insight for the Hurting
I know it’s hard. I know the nights are long and the questions are loud. But remember this: the refiner only stops the process when he can see his own reflection in the gold. God is working in you until the world can see the reflection of Jesus in your life.
You aren't falling apart; you are being broken open so that the light of Christ can shine through the cracks. If you need a place to process this, we invite you to explore our resources on Finding Peace in a World of Digital Noise or read more about How to Find Peace When Life Feels Chaotic.

A Prayer for the Fire
Lord, I thank You that You are with me in the fire. I admit that I am tired and I am afraid, but I choose to trust You. Refine my heart. Take away anything that doesn't look like You. Give me the courage to stand firm and refuse to bow to fear. Let Your peace, which passes all understanding, guard my heart and my mind today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
