Christian Living | How to Integrate Viral Faith Trends With Christianity | Discerning Truth in a Digital Age

Integrating viral faith trends requires a heart for God and a mind for discernment. We can engage with what’s trending by filtering every hashtag and video through the timeless truth of Scripture. It’s about being present where people are: online: while remaining anchored in the unchanging message of Jesus Christ.
Romans 12:2: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
1 Thessalonians 5:21: "But test everything; hold fast what is good."
Matthew 28:19-20: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
In this digital era, it feels like there is a new "viral" moment every single hour. For those of us who follow Jesus, the question isn't just about how to stay relevant, but how to stay righteous while we navigate these waves of information. We are called to be the light of the world, and today, a huge part of that world exists in the palm of our hands. Engaging with digital trends is a beautiful opportunity for the Great Commission, but it requires us to move with intentionality and wisdom.
As we look at "Wednesday Wonder," I often think about the incredible complexity of information. In the world of science, we see that information: like the digital code that runs our favorite apps: doesn't just appear out of thin air. It requires an intelligence, a source. When we look at the DNA in our own bodies, we see a biological code so complex that it puts the most advanced software to shame. This is the handiwork of God. He is the ultimate communicator, the original "content creator," and He designed us to seek truth and share it.

When a faith-based trend goes viral—whether it’s a specific worship song, a short-form video challenge, or a new way of explaining a theological concept—it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement.
But as believers, I believe we have to remember that popularity does not always equal purity. We are tasked with “testing everything.” Does this trend align with the character of God? Does it elevate the name of Jesus, or does it shift the focus to the person on the screen?
Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails.
Using those guardrails means we look at every trend through the lens of the 16 Fundamental Truths. We hold firm to the fact that salvation is found exclusively through Jesus Christ. In a world that often tries to soften the Gospel or offer "many paths" to God to avoid conflict, we stand on the truth that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. When we engage with viral content, we ensure that our voice remains clear on this point. We don't have to be combative, but we do have to be consistent.
One of the wonders of creation is how God allows us to use technology to connect across oceans and time zones. At Boundless Online Church, I see this every day. We aren't limited by a physical building; we are a global family. But with that global reach comes a responsibility for digital safety and spiritual accountability. Just as we wouldn't walk into a physical environment that is harmful to our spirit, we shouldn't linger in digital spaces that pull us away from Christ.

If you’re navigating the digital world with your family, I always recommend being proactive. For your media consumption, look into clean-version services like VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way” to ensure what you’re watching aligns with your values. For online safety and keeping your family’s hearts protected from the darker corners of the web, tools like Bark and Covenant Eyes are essential for accountability. We want our digital "walk" to be as holy as our physical one.
The beauty of God’s creation is that He is the author of order, not confusion. When we see a viral trend that brings people together in prayer or encourages the reading of Scripture, we celebrate that! It’s like watching a star ignite in the night sky. But we also have to be the ones who bring the depth. A 15-second video can spark an interest in God, but it cannot replace the deep, transformative work of Bible study and community. Our goal is to use the "viral" moment as a front door, leading people into a lasting relationship with the Savior.
Remember, you are never forgotten, you are never alone, and you are deeply loved by God. Whether you are scrolling through a feed or sitting in quiet prayer, His Spirit is with you. Let's use the tools He’s given us: from the marvels of science to the reach of the internet: to build His Kingdom with joy and discernment. We are living in an incredible time where the Gospel can reach the ends of the earth in a heartbeat. Let's make sure that when it does, it's the true, life-saving message of Jesus.

Lord, thank You for the wonder of Your creation and the ways You allow us to connect with one another. I pray for my friend reading this right now. Give them a spirit of discernment as they navigate the digital world. Help us to use every trend and every tool to bring glory to Your name. May we be lights that point others toward the hope of Jesus Christ. Keep us anchored in Your Word and filled with Your peace. Amen.
