Christian Living: How to Mature in Faith When Life Gets Hard?

If you want to mature in your faith when life gets hard, the secret isn't trying to escape the struggle, it’s learning how to walk with Jesus right in the middle of it. Real spiritual maturity isn’t found on the mountaintop where everything is easy; it’s forged in the "refining fire" of the valley. When you stop asking "Why is this happening?" and start asking "What are You teaching me, Lord?", you move from a fragile faith to a firm foundation that can't be shaken.

Maybe you’re reading this from a hospital waiting room in Memphis, or perhaps you’re scrolling through your phone after a long shift, feeling like you’re at the end of your rope. Life has a way of turning up the heat, doesn't it? One minute things are fine, and the next, you’re facing a furnace of health issues, financial stress, or family tension.

The pain is real. It’s heavy. It makes you feel like God is a million miles away, watching from the sidelines while you deal with the smoke and the flames. In the Bible, Malachi 3:3 tells us that God "will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." Think about that image for a second. A refiner doesn’t just toss the silver into the fire and walk away to grab lunch. He sits. He watches. He stays close. He knows exactly how hot the fire needs to be to burn away the dross (the impurities) without destroying the precious metal.

The heat you’re feeling right now isn’t a sign of God’s absence; it’s often a sign of His intense focus on your life. He is removing the things that hold you back so that when the process is done, the world can see His reflection in you.

5 Steps to Growing in the Fire

So, how do we actually grow when it hurts? Here are five practical steps to help you move from surviving to maturing in your walk with Christ.

1. Immerse Yourself in the Word

When life gets loud, you need to hear a voice that is louder than your fear. You can’t survive a fire on a once-a-week sermon. You need daily, deliberate intake of Scripture. It’s like feeding your soul. If you only ate one meal on Sunday, you’d be starving by Tuesday. Your faith is the same way.

3. Walk with the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is called our "Helper" for a reason. He doesn't just give us advice; He gives us strength. Maturity happens when we stop trying to "white-knuckle" our way through trials and start leaning on the Spirit's power.

Practice simple, honest prayer. Tell God you're tired. Tell Him you're frustrated. Then, sit in the quiet and ask, "Holy Spirit, lead me today." You'll be surprised how He provides peace in the middle of the chaos.

4. Refuse to Bow to Fear

One of our favorite themes here at Boundless is "No Bowing Down." It comes from the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3. They were told to bow to an idol or face a fiery furnace. Their response? "Our God is able to deliver us... but even if He doesn't, we will not serve your gods."

Maturity is saying, "Even if things don't go my way, I'm still trusting Jesus." Don't let fear dictate your decisions. Stand on the truth of who God is, not on how the situation looks.

5. Choose Gratitude and Humility

Pride says, "I deserve better than this." Humility says, "Lord, I need You." When we stay low before God, we stay in a position where He can lift us up. And gratitude? Gratitude is a weapon. When you start thanking God for His faithfulness, even for the small things like a beautiful Memphis sunset or a kind word from a friend, it shifts your focus from the fire to the Refiner.

The "Even If" Faith

There’s a deep kind of peace that comes when you stop fighting the process and start trusting the Person. In James 1:2-4, we’re told to "consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance."

That perseverance is what leads to maturity. It’s the "Even If" faith.

• "Even if" the report isn't what I hoped for, God is still good.

• "Even if" the bank account is low, God is my provider.

• "Even if" I feel alone, God will never leave me.

When you settle those truths in your heart, you aren't just getting through the fire; you're growing in it. You're becoming the person God created you to be, stronger, purer, and more like Jesus.

Lord, I lift up the person reading this right now. You know the heat they are feeling. You know the weight they are carrying. I pray that they would feel Your presence sitting right there with them in the fire. Give them the strength to stay in the Word, the courage to reach out for community, and the grace to refuse to bow to fear. Purify our hearts, Lord, and help us to reflect Your love to the world.
