Christian Living: Is My Faith Failing?

If you feel like your faith is slipping through your fingers, here is the short answer: No, your faith is not failing. It is being refined.

We often mistake the heat of a hard season for the absence of God. We think that if we were "stronger" Christians, we wouldn't feel this exhausted or confused. But in the Kingdom of God, the furnace isn't where faith goes to die, it’s where faith goes to become pure gold.

Refined Gold

The Pain of the Furnace

Maybe you’re sitting in Memphis today, watching the Mississippi River roll by, feeling like your life is just as muddy and turbulent. Or maybe you’re thousands of miles away, logging in from a hospital breakroom or a quiet living room after the kids have finally gone to sleep.

You’ve been praying, but the situation hasn't changed. You’ve been reading, but the words feel dry. You start to wonder, Is something wrong with me? Is God mad at me? Is my faith just… gone?

That weight you feel? That’s the "Refining Fire." It’s uncomfortable, it’s hot, and it forces everything to the surface, the good, the bad, and the grit. But you aren't being consumed; you're being prepared.

1. Embrace the Refining Fire

In the Bible, Peter tells us not to be surprised when things get heated.

"In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ." , 1 Peter 1:6–7 (NKJV)

Gold doesn't become pure by sitting in a cool, dark room. It has to hit the crucible. The heat separates the "dross" (the junk) from the value. When you feel the pressure, God isn't trying to destroy you; He’s trying to show you what’s actually inside you. He is pulling the "real you" to the surface.

2. Adopt a "No Bowing Down" Posture

We can’t talk about fire without talking about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were faced with a giant golden image and a king who demanded they bow. Their response in Daniel 3 is the blueprint for spiritual maturity.

They didn't say, "God will definitely save us from the fire." They said, "Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us... But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods."

Maturity is moving from "God, do what I want" to "God, I trust who You are, even if the outcome isn't what I planned." When you refuse to bow to fear, anxiety, or the "idols" of comfort, your faith grows roots that no storm can pull up.

3. Look for the "Fourth Man"

The miracle of the furnace wasn't just that the three men survived; it was who was in there with them. Nebuchadnezzar looked in and saw a fourth figure who looked like "the Son of God."

Jesus doesn't always stop the fire from starting, but He always steps into the fire with you. You are never alone in your struggle. If you are feeling lonely today, we want to walk with you. You can find prayer and support right now at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.

4. Anchor in the Word, Not Your Emotions

Emotions are like the weather in Memphis, one minute it's sunny, the next it’s a thunderstorm with 100% humidity. If you base your faith on how you feel, you will stay stuck in the cycle of "is it failing?"

Spiritual maturity happens when we anchor ourselves in the unchanging Word of God.

5. Trust the Process of Maturity

Growth is often quiet. You don't see a tree growing in real-time, but a year later, it’s taller. Your faith is maturing every time you choose to pray when you don't feel like it, every time you choose to be kind when you're tired, and every time you log on to watch sermons at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org even when you have questions.

A Prayer for the Refined Heart

Lord, I thank You that You are the Great Refiner. Thank You that even when I feel the heat, You are holding the crucible. I pray for the one reading this who feels like their faith is failing. Remind them that You are in the fire with them. Give them the strength to stand tall and the grace to trust Your process. Bring them peace that surpasses understanding. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
