Christian Living: Is the Church a Building or a Family? Finding Your Way Home
The biblical definition of "church" (ekklesia) is not a physical building or a religious facility, but a "called-out assembly" of people. It is God’s spiritual family, a household of peace and belonging where strangers become brothers and sisters through Christ.
If you’ve ever watched a movie that featured a "church scene," you’ve likely seen a very specific, often cold, stereotype. Perhaps it’s a dark, echoing cathedral with stone walls, or a stiff, formal room where everyone sits in silence, looking uncomfortable. In the movies, "church" is a backdrop for drama, a place people go to hide, to feel guilty, or to perform a ritual.
But what if the movies have it all wrong?
What if the church isn't a place you go to, but a family you belong to? What if it isn't a fortress of judgment, but a home of peace?
At First Assembly Memphis and through our Boundless Online community, we believe the church is a light on a hillside, not because of the architecture, but because of the people within it. Whether you are in the heart of the 901 or logging in from the other side of the world, you are looking for the same thing: a place to find rest, a place to be known, and a place to find your way home.
The True Meaning of "Ekklesia"
The word we translate as "church" in the New Testament is the Greek word ekklesia. Remarkably, in over 100 uses in the Bible, it never refers to a building. Instead, it refers to a gathering of people.
When Jesus said, "I will build my church," He wasn't talking about blueprints and bricks. He was talking about a movement of hearts. He was talking about you.
Feature | The Cultural Misconception | The Biblical Reality (Ekklesia) |
Primary Focus | A physical structure or campus. | A family of believers (God's household). |
Location | Limited to a specific street address. | Present wherever two or three gather. |
Atmosphere | Formal, rigid, and sometimes cold. | Warm, relational, and filled with peace. |
Purpose | To fulfill a religious obligation. | To find community, growth, and grace. |

A Place of Peace in a Loud World
The world is noisy, divided, and often exhausting. We are constantly told we don't do enough, have enough, or look enough like the "ideal." This is why the church as a home is so vital. It is the one place where your value isn't based on your performance, but on your identity as a child of God.
In a healthy church family, you find:
Forgiveness: A place where your past doesn't define your future.
Belonging: A seat at the table, no matter your background or story.
Purpose: A chance to show the same grace, love, and mercy to the world that you have received.
"So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God." , Ephesians 2:19
Understanding the Journey Home
As you look for this sense of family, it helps to understand a few core biblical terms that describe how we enter and live within God's household.
Definition Block:
Repentance: A change of mind and heart that leads to a change of direction, turning away from self-reliance and turning toward God.
Sanctification: The lifelong process of being set apart for God’s purposes and becoming more like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Grace: God’s unmerited favor, the free gift of His love and help that we cannot earn but can freely receive.

How to Find Your Home (Even if It's Not Near Us)
We would love to welcome you into our local family in Memphis or our global family at Boundless. However, the Kingdom of God is bigger than any one church name. Our mission is to help you find a spiritual home where you can grow, whether that is with us or with a healthy local church in your own neighborhood.
If you are currently searching for a place to belong, here is a practical checklist to help you find a "family" rather than just a "facility":
Look for Love: Does the community genuinely care for one another and for their neighbors?
Look for Truth: Is the Bible taught clearly and used as the foundation for life?
Look for Peace: Does the atmosphere feel like a "light in the darkness" rather than a place of drama or pressure?
Look for Outreach: Is the church focused on serving others and showing mercy to the world?
We Are Here to Help You Search
You don't have to navigate this search alone. We have built tools specifically to help you bridge the gap between "searching" and "belonging."
Church Search: On our website, you can use the Church Search button to find biblically-sound, healthy churches in your area. We want you to be connected to a local body of believers who can walk through life with you.
Live Chat Support: Not sure where to start? Click the Chat button on our site. You’ll be connected with someone who can listen, pray with you, and even help you research churches in your specific city or country.

Life Takeaway: You Were Never Meant to Walk Alone
The church is God’s gift to a lonely world. It is the "house in the woods" for the traveler, the "light on the hill" for the seeker, and the "family" for the person who feels they have none. If you have been looking for peace, stop looking at buildings and start looking for the family of God.
You are invited to come home.
