Christian Living: Is Your Faith Getting Stronger? How to Mature When Life Feels Like a Furnace?

If you feel like you are walking through a fiery season right now, you might be wondering if your faith is actually growing or if it is simply burning up. We often think of spiritual growth as a peaceful walk through a green pasture, but the Bible frequently describes it as a process involving heat, pressure, and refinement.

Spiritual growth is the process of your faith being tested, refined, and strengthened through life's challenges. You mature by choosing to trust God’s character and remain obedient to His Word, even when circumstances are painful. Like gold in a furnace, the fire doesn't destroy the faithful; it removes the impurities and leaves behind a heart that reflects Jesus.

The Digital Front Porch: A View from Memphis

Pull up a chair. Whether you are sitting on a porch in Memphis, Tennessee, or checking in from a hospital bed across the world, we want you to know something: you are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.

In our neck of the woods, we know a thing or two about heat. When the humidity hits in mid-July, it feels like you can’t escape it. But there’s another kind of heat, the kind that hits your soul. It’s the phone call from the doctor, the unexpected job loss, the struggle in your marriage, or the deep loneliness that keeps you up at night.

When life feels like a furnace, it is easy to think that God has stepped away. But the truth is actually the opposite. In the Bible, the furnace is often the very place where God shows up most clearly. At Boundless Online Church, we believe that your current struggle isn't a sign of God's absence, but a training ground for your spiritual maturity.

Theme 1: The Refining Fire

One of the most powerful images of spiritual growth in the Bible is the "Refiner’s Fire."

In Malachi 3:3, it says, "He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness."

Think about that for a second. The refiner doesn't just throw the gold into the fire and walk away to get a coffee. He sits. He stays close. He watches the metal carefully. He knows exactly how much heat is needed to bring the dross (the impurities) to the surface so it can be skimmed away. He knows the process is finished when he can see his own reflection in the liquid metal.

The Refiner's Fire

Your trials are not meant to consume you; they are meant to consume the things in you that aren't of God, the pride, the self-reliance, the bitterness, and the fear. When you come through the fire, you come out looking more like Jesus.

As 1 Peter 1:6-7 reminds us: "In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ."

Theme 2: No Bowing Down (The Lesson of Daniel 3)

When we talk about maturing in the fire, we have to look at Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These three young men lived in Babylon, a culture that demanded they "bow down" to an idol of gold. The king’s command was simple: bow or burn.

Their response is one of the greatest declarations of faith in human history. They didn't stutter, and they didn't try to negotiate. They said:

"Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace... But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods..." (Daniel 3:17-18).

This is the "No Bowing Down" posture. It is the mark of a mature Christian.

Settle the Issue Before the Heat

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn't decide their convictions while they were standing in front of the furnace. They had settled the issue long before the crisis arrived. Spiritual growth happens in the daily "quiet" moments, the Tuesday mornings when you choose to read Scripture instead of scrolling news, or the Wednesday nights when you join an online Bible study. These small acts of obedience build the spiritual muscle you need to stand tall when everyone else is bowing.

No Bowing Down - The Fourth Man

The "But If Not" Faith

Maturity is moving from "God will do what I want" to "God is good even if He doesn't do what I want." These men knew God was able to save them. They had no doubt about His power. But their worship wasn't a transaction. They didn't follow God because He promised to keep them out of furnaces; they followed Him because He was the only God worth following.

If your faith is getting stronger, you’ll find yourself saying, "Lord, I believe You can heal this, I believe You can fix this, and I believe You can provide. But if not, I still belong to You."

5 Takeaways: How to Grow When the Heat Is On

How do you know if you are actually maturing? Here are five practical ways to lean into growth during a fiery season:

  1. Settle Your Convictions Early: Don't wait for a crisis to decide what you believe. Use the resources at Boundless Online Church to ground yourself in the Word of God now.

  2. Trust God’s Character Over Your Circumstances: Your situation may change, but God never does. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. When you can't see His hand, trust His heart.

  3. Look for the "Fourth Man": In Daniel 3, the king looked into the furnace and saw four men walking around, and "the form of the fourth is like the Son of God." Jesus doesn't always keep us out of the fire, but He always walks with us through it.

  4. Refuse to Compromise for Comfort: It is always easier to bow. It is easier to go along with the crowd, to harbor the grudge, or to give in to the temptation. But growth only happens when you choose the "hard right" over the "easy wrong."

  5. Embrace the Refining Process: Stop asking, "Why is this happening to me?" and start asking, "What are You teaching me, Lord?" Let the fire do its work of removing the dross so you can shine brighter.

What to Do Today: A Simple Next Step

If you feel like you are in the furnace right now, you don't have to walk through it alone. Here is a simple step you can take today:

Identify one "idol" you've been tempted to bow to. Maybe it’s the idol of "certainty," where you refuse to trust God unless you know the outcome. Maybe it’s the idol of "approval," where you are more worried about what people think than what God says. Name it, pray about it, and decide today: No bowing down.

Next, reach out for community. At Boundless Online Church, we have small groups and prayer partners ready to stand with you. Faith is a team sport. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood together, and so should you.

Community on the Digital Front Porch

A Prayer for the Fire

Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Fourth Man in the fire with me. I admit that the heat feels heavy right now, and I’ve been tempted to bow down to fear and discouragement. Today, I choose to trust Your refining process. Purify my heart. Remove the dross. Help me to stand firm in my convictions, knowing that You are able to deliver me, but even if the situation doesn't change, I will still worship You. Amen.
