Christian Living: Looking for Real Life Change? 5 Things You Should Know About Meeting Jesus Personally

If you have ever sat on a front porch in Memphis on a humid July morning, you know that heavy feeling in the air. Sometimes life feels exactly like that, thick, stifling, and hard to breathe through. You want things to change. You’ve tried the self-help books, the new gym routine, and maybe even a few "religious" things, but the core of who you are still feels stuck.
Here is the truth: Real, lasting life change doesn't come from a better habit or a new resolution. It comes from a personal encounter with a Person. His name is Jesus.
Meeting Jesus personally isn't about joining a club or checking a box on a Sunday morning. It is a radical, beautiful disruption of everything you thought you knew about yourself. Whether you are scrolling through this from a hospital bed, a break room, or your living room sofa, Jesus is ready to meet you right where you are.
Here are five things you should know about what happens when you stop trying to change yourself and let Him do the work.
1. You Are Seen Before You Are Changed
We often think we have to "clean up" before we can meet God. We treat Jesus like a prestigious guest we have to tidy the house for. But the Gospel is the exact opposite. Jesus doesn't wait for you to get your act together; He meets you in the middle of the mess.
In Psalm 139, the Bible says that God is "intimately acquainted" with all our ways. He knows the words on your tongue before you even speak them. When you meet Jesus, the first thing you realize is that you are finally, fully seen. Every mistake, every secret, and every regret is visible to Him, and yet, He doesn't turn away.
Real life change starts when you realize you don't have to hide anymore. You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten. You can find more about this journey of being known at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.
2. The Refining Fire: God Destroys What Destroys You
One of the most powerful themes in Scripture is the "Refining Fire." In Malachi 3:2, it asks, "But who can endure the day of his coming? For he will be like a refiner’s fire."
Most of us are afraid of fire. We think fire means destruction. But a refiner’s fire isn't meant to consume the gold; it’s meant to burn away the "dross", the impurities, the rubble, and the junk that keeps the gold from shining. When you meet Jesus, He begins a refining process in your heart.

He will start to burn away the bitterness you've carried for years. He will burn away the addictions that have kept you in chains. This process isn't always comfortable, heat rarely is, but it is always purposeful. He isn't out to destroy you; He is burning away what is destroying you so the "real you" can finally breathe.
3. No Bowing Down: The Courage to Stand Up
When Jesus changes your life, your "want-to" begins to change. You start to see the world differently. In the book of Daniel, there is a famous story about three young men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were pressured by the culture around them to bow down to an idol. The king told them that if they didn't bow, they’d be thrown into a literal furnace.
Their response? "We will not bow."
They knew that the God they served was greater than the pressure they faced. When you meet Jesus personally, He gives you a new kind of backbone. You realize you don't have to bow down to the expectations of your neighbors, the pressure of social media, or the weight of your past.

Real change means finding the strength to stay upright when the rest of the world is falling for anything. This "No Bowing Down" spirit isn't about being stubborn; it's about being secure. When you are secure in Jesus, you don't need the world's approval.
4. Freedom is a Process, Not Just a Moment
We love "before and after" photos. We want the instant transformation. But while the decision to follow Jesus happens in a moment, the change often happens in a thousand small steps.
Jesus said in John 8:31-32, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Freedom is found in the "holding to." It’s in the daily Bible study, the consistent prayer, and the choice to stay connected to a community. If you feel like you've met Jesus but you’re still struggling with old habits, don't give up. The Refiner is still at work. You aren't a failure; you are a work in progress. You can find support and virtual small groups to help you through this process at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.
5. Your Mess Becomes Your Mission
The most incredible part of meeting Jesus is what He does with your past. He doesn't just erase it; He redeems it. In Memphis, we know a thing or two about "soul music", it’s music that comes from a place of deep struggle and finds a way to express joy.
Your life becomes soul music. The things that used to cause you shame, the failed marriage, the struggle with alcohol, the years spent running away, Jesus takes those very things and uses them to help someone else. Your testimony becomes a bridge for someone else to find hope.

When you meet Jesus, you aren't just changed for your own sake. You are changed to be a light in a dark place. You are given a purpose that is bigger than your own comfort.
A Prayer for Real Change
Lord, I’m tired of trying to change myself. I’ve reached the end of my own strength. Right now, I ask for a personal encounter with You. Be the Refiner in my life. Burn away the things that are holding me back and give me the courage to stand tall and never bow down to the pressures of this world. I believe You see me, You love me, and You have a plan for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
