Finding peace that passes understanding: Spiritual disciplines for the anxious heart.
I know what it feels like to have a racing heart and a mind that won't shut off. We live in a world that is louder, faster, and more demanding than any generation before us. Between the headlines, the notifications, and the personal weights we carry, anxiety can feel like a constant companion. But I want you to know today: You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten. And most importantly, you are never alone.
In my journey as a pastor, I’ve seen how the intersection of faith and mental wellness isn't just a "nice idea", it’s a lifeline. When we talk about mental health, we aren't just talking about clinical diagnoses; we are talking about the stewardship of the mind God gave us. Real wellness begins when we invite the Holy Spirit into our struggles and anchor our daily lives in habits that remind us of who He is and who we are in Him.
How can spiritual habits improve my mental health?
Spiritual habits like prayer, Scripture reading, and community connection improve mental health by reducing cortisol levels, shifting focus from worry to gratitude, and creating a sense of belonging. These practices activate the brain’s "rest and digest" system, providing a biological and spiritual foundation for peace. By anchoring the mind in the truth of God’s Word, believers can break cycles of ruminating thoughts and find lasting emotional resilience through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Counselor in the Chaos
When Jesus prepared to leave His disciples, He didn’t leave them with a set of instructions on how to "manage" their stress. He gave them a Person. He promised the Holy Spirit, whom He called the Comforter and the Counselor (John 14:26). In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that the Holy Spirit is not just a distant force, but a present help. He is the one who "helps us in our weakness" (Romans 8:26).

I’ve found that the Holy Spirit works most powerfully when we create space for Him to speak. This is where spiritual habits, or disciplines, come in. They aren't "extra credit" for Christians; they are the containers that hold our peace. When you feel overwhelmed, the Holy Spirit is there to remind you of the peace that Jesus left for you. But we have to be intentional about tuning out the noise of the "901" or the world at large to hear His whisper.
Three Habits for a Restored Mind
If you are struggling today, I want to suggest three simple, powerful habits that can change the atmosphere of your heart.
1. Scripture Saturation over Information Overload
We are often anxious because we are more filled with the news than we are with the Good News. I encourage you to start your day by reading a Psalm before you check your phone. When we saturate our minds in Scripture, we are replacing the lies of anxiety with the truth of God’s sovereignty. At Boundless Online Church, we provide daily Bible studies designed to help you do exactly that, stay grounded in Truth even when the world feels shaky.
2. Prayer as a Dialogue, Not a Chore
Prayer is often seen as a list of demands, but for the anxious heart, prayer is a release. It’s "casting all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Try "breath prayers": inhaling a truth (e.g., "The Lord is my Shepherd") and exhaling a worry (e.g., "I will not fear"). This simple physical and spiritual habit helps regulate your nervous system while reconnecting you to the Father.
3. Community Connection
Anxiety thrives in isolation. It wants you to believe you are the only one struggling. That is a lie. Real wellness involves walking with others. Whether it’s through our online community groups or a local Memphis small group, being seen by others is a vital part of the healing process. We were never meant to carry our burdens alone.

Guarding Your Digital Gates
As an online church, we know that the digital world is where many of us spend our time. But it can also be a source of significant stress. To protect your mental health, you have to guard your "digital gates." This is why I always recommend tools that help keep your home and your mind a safe space.
If you find that the media you consume is feeding your anxiety, consider using family-safe clean versions via VidAngel or "Enjoy Movies Your Way." For families wanting to protect their children (and themselves) from the darker corners of the web, I highly recommend the accountability of Bark and Covenant Eyes. Digital wellness is a prerequisite for spiritual wellness in the 21st century.
Why Theology Matters for Your Mental Health
You might wonder why we talk so much about doctrine when discussing mental health. It’s because our Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. It keeps us centered on the fact that God is good, He is in control, and He provides a path to wholeness through Jesus Christ alone. We don't believe in a vague "universe" providing peace; we believe in a personal Creator who provides it through His Spirit and His Word. These doctrinal truths provide the "why" behind our habits. We pray because we know He hears. We study because we know He speaks. We gather because we know we are the Body of Christ.

If you are in Memphis, Tennessee, or anywhere across the globe, please know that your mental wellness matters to God. It isn't a sign of weak faith to feel anxious; it's a sign that you are human. But you don't have to stay stuck in that anxiety. There is a "peace that surpasses all understanding" available to you through a relationship with Jesus Christ and the daily rhythms of a life lived in His presence.
