Christian Living: Rest as Resistance: Reclaiming Your Peace

Have you ever felt guilty for sitting down? Like the moment you stop moving, a little voice whispers that you should be doing something, answering emails, folding laundry, checking your phone, or tackling that ever-growing to-do list?

Friend, if that sounds familiar, you're not alone. And here's the beautiful truth we're diving into today: rest isn't laziness. Rest is holy. Rest is resistance. If your soul feels tired, Jesus still invites you to a quiet place. Real rest is not escape from life. It is a way of trusting God in the middle of it.

This article explores what the Bible says about rest, why peace matters in a restless world, and how small, faithful choices can help you slow down and breathe again.

In a world that constantly tells us our worth is measured by our productivity, choosing to rest becomes one of the most radical, faith-filled things we can do. It's a declaration that we trust God more than we trust our own hustle. It's a statement that we are beloved children of the Creator, not machines designed to run until we break down.

Welcome home to this space. You are never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God. Let's explore what it really means to reclaim your peace.

The Bible Study: Mark 6:31 – Jesus Invites You to Rest

Let's open our Bibles to Mark 6:31. Jesus and His disciples had been working hard, healing the sick, casting out demons, and teaching crowds. People were coming and going so constantly that they didn't even have time to eat.

And what did Jesus do? He didn't push them harder. He didn't say, "We'll rest when we're dead." Instead, He said:

"Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." , Mark 6:31 (NIV)

Read that again. Jesus, the Son of God, the Savior of the world, prioritized rest. He didn't see it as optional or as a reward for finishing all the work. He saw it as essential.

Here's what's so powerful about this verse: Jesus didn't wait until the ministry was "done." There were still crowds. There were still needs. There was still work to be done. But He knew that depleted disciples couldn't pour out what they didn't have.

The same is true for you.

You don't have to earn rest. You don't have to wait until every email is answered, every dish is clean, or every person is satisfied with you. Jesus is inviting you, right now, today, to come away with Him to a quiet place.

Reflection Questions:

  1. When was the last time you rested without guilt?

  2. What "crowds" in your life make it hard to find quiet moments with God?

  3. How might your faith deepen if you accepted Jesus's invitation to rest more often?

Why Rest Is Resistance

We live in a culture obsessed with "grind culture", the idea that we should always be hustling, always be busy, always be optimizing our time. Social media celebrates the "rise and grind" lifestyle, and we're subtly taught that rest is for the weak.

But here's the counter-cultural truth: your worth is not determined by your productivity.

Rest is resistance because it pushes back against the lie that you have to earn your value. It disrupts the systems that want to squeeze every last ounce of energy from you. It says, "I am more than what I produce. I am a beloved child of God."

Historically, rest has been denied to marginalized communities as a tool of oppression. Choosing rest, especially in a world that profits from your exhaustion, is an act of reclaiming your humanity and your peace.

When you rest, you're not being lazy. You're being obedient. You're trusting that God can handle things while you recharge. You're honoring the Sabbath rhythm that God built into creation itself.

The Life Hack: The "Sabbath Scenery Change"

Okay, let's get practical. Maybe you're thinking, "This sounds great, Penny, but I can't exactly jet off to a beach resort for a week of rest."

Good news: you don't have to!

Here's a simple life hack we're calling The Sabbath Scenery Change:

Even if you can't leave home, you can reset your soul by simply changing your view. Here's how:

  1. Move your chair to a different window. Seriously: just shifting your perspective can help your brain recognize that it's time to pause.

  2. Step outside for 20 minutes. Go to a park, sit on your porch, or walk around the block. Let nature remind you of God's beauty and provision.

  3. Create a "rest corner" in your home. Designate a spot that's just for stillness: no phones, no work, no distractions. A cozy chair, a blanket, maybe a candle.

The key is intentionality. Rest doesn't happen by accident in our busy world: we have to choose it. And sometimes, the smallest changes in our environment signal to our bodies and souls that it's time to receive God's peace.

Movie Review: "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"

Looking for a movie that captures the spirit of stepping out of the grind and finding beauty in the world? We highly recommend "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (2013), starring Ben Stiller.

Walter Mitty is a man stuck in a monotonous job, daydreaming about adventure but never actually living one. When circumstances push him out of his comfort zone, he embarks on a journey that takes him across breathtaking landscapes: from Iceland to the Himalayas.

Why we love it:

  • It reminds us that life is meant to be lived, not just survived.

  • It celebrates stepping away from routine to discover wonder.

  • It shows that sometimes the most meaningful moments come when we stop rushing and start noticing.

The movie's message aligns beautifully with our theme today: there's a whole world of beauty waiting for you when you slow down enough to see it. God's creation is speaking His love over you: are you paused enough to hear it?

Family-friendly rating: PG – Great for a cozy movie night!

Your Biblical Affirmation

Speak this over yourself today, friend:

"I honor God by resting my soul, and I am renewed by His peace."

Write it on a sticky note. Set it as your phone background. Whisper it when guilt tries to creep in. This is your truth. Rest is not rebellion against responsibility: it's reverence for the One who sustains you.
