Christian Living: Stewardship or Shortcut?

Weight-loss medication can be a tool of stewardship for some people, but it can also become a shortcut when appearance, control, or identity replace trust in God. Christians can seek health wisely while remembering that our worth is not found in a number, a body shape, or a cultural definition of wellness.

We live in an era where wellness is often treated like a commandment. From trackers to diets to weight-loss medications, the pressure to optimize the body can become intense. For Christians, this is not only a health question. It is also a heart question about identity, motives, and trust.

Scripture reminds us, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit... Therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). That means our bodies matter to God. Caring for them can be an act of stewardship, not vanity. But the line can blur when health becomes a false savior or appearance becomes a source of worth.

Medicine is not automatically a shortcut, and discipline is not automatically holiness. Some people face real metabolic, hormonal, or chronic health struggles, and wise medical support may help them care for their bodies more faithfully. At the same time, no prescription can heal shame, comparison, or the deeper hunger of the soul. Only Jesus can do that.

Christians should also reject the harmful idea that thinness equals godliness. Our value does not come from body size, cultural approval, or outward success. We are made in the image of God and redeemed by Christ. That truth protects us from pride on one side and despair on the other.

If you are trying to discern a health decision, ask honest questions. Am I seeking strength to serve God and love others well? Am I placing my hope in Christ or in an outcome? Am I caring for both my body and my heart? These questions can lead us away from panic and toward wisdom.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit... Therefore honor God with your bodies.” Insight: Stewardship means caring for your body as something entrusted to you by God, not worshiping it and not neglecting it.

Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is... self-control.” Insight: True self-control is formed by the Holy Spirit. Tools may help physically, but spiritual transformation still matters deeply.

1 Timothy 4:8 “For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way...” Insight: Physical health has value, but it should never outrank the formation of a godly heart.

2 Corinthians 4:16 “Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” Insight: Your deepest identity is not defined by your appearance. In Christ, your inner life can be renewed even in seasons of physical struggle.

Father, thank You for the body You have given me and for Your care over every part of my life. Give me wisdom to make health decisions with humility, peace, and honesty. Guard me from shame, pride, comparison, and false hope. Teach me to honor You in my body while finding my identity fully in Jesus Christ. Amen.
