Christian Living: The Soul-Deep Hunger for Unplugged Faith: Why Gen Z is Trading TikTok for Time with God

Social media can quietly damage spiritual health by feeding comparison, constant noise, and distraction that makes it harder to hear God clearly. Choosing unplugged faith creates room for prayer, Scripture, and stillness, helping believers move from shallow scrolling to a deeper, quieter relationship with Jesus Christ.

I’ve noticed a quiet revolution happening across the digital landscape. It’s not loud, flashy, or built around a viral hashtag. In fact, it feels like the opposite. It sounds like silence. It looks like a young person with a Bible and a notebook, phone tucked away, making space for God in a world that rarely gets quiet.

We’ve all felt it, that heavy, hollow feeling after forty-five minutes of mindless scrolling. You started out looking for a recipe or a quick laugh, and you ended up feeling anxious, inadequate, and spiritually drained. For a generation that has never known a world without high-speed internet, the "always-on" lifestyle is finally reaching a breaking point. The trade-off is becoming clear: We are gaining followers but losing our focus; we are winning "likes" but losing our peace. This is why I believe we are entering a season where many are choosing to trade TikTok for time with God.

The Question: Is our digital life drowning out our spiritual life?

The question many are asking today is: How do I find God in a world that never stops talking? We are bombarded with notifications, headlines, and the constant pressure to perform for an invisible audience. This digital noise doesn’t just take up our time; it takes up our "soul space." When every spare second is filled with a screen, we lose the margin necessary for the Holy Spirit to speak to our hearts. We’ve become a culture that is "connected" to everyone but increasingly disconnected from the One who created us.

Community Over Comparison

The Answer: Trading the temporary for the eternal

The answer isn't necessarily to delete every app and move to a cabin in the woods (though some days that sounds tempting!). The answer is a intentional shift toward "low-tech living" for the sake of high-touch faith. Gen Z is leading the way by reclaiming their attention. They are realizing that the "algorithm" doesn't know their heart, but Jesus does. By setting boundaries, what some call a "digital detox", they are making room for the "still, small voice" of God mentioned in 1 Kings 19:12.

Trading TikTok for time with God isn't about being "anti-technology." It’s about being "pro-presence." It’s about recognizing that our souls were not designed to process the collective trauma and opinions of eight billion people simultaneously. We were designed for a primary relationship with our Creator. When we unplug, we aren't just "turning off" the world; we are "turning on" our spiritual ears. This shift is allowing a new generation to experience the depth of Scripture and the power of prayer without the constant ping of a notification interrupting their conversation with the Father.

The Value: Finding stillness in a restless world

The value of this unplugged faith goes far beyond just "feeling better." It is about the very foundation of our walk with Christ. In the Assemblies of God, we believe that we are called to live Spirit-empowered lives, but that empowerment requires a connection that the world cannot provide. This means we understand that our sanctification, the process of becoming more like Jesus, happens as we yield ourselves to Him. You cannot yield to the Spirit while your mind is fully occupied by a 15-second loop of a trending dance.

Deep Roots, No WiFi

When we choose to unplug, we are practicing the biblical discipline of solitude. Jesus himself frequently withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16). If the Son of God needed to get away from the crowds to hear from the Father, how much more do we? This "unplugged" time allows us to move from information to transformation. It’s the difference between reading a quote about God and actually sitting in His presence. This is where real healing happens, where anxiety meets the peace of the Prince of Peace.

To help you navigate this transition, I want to offer three pillar points for your journey toward an unplugged faith:

1. Silence the Noise

You cannot hear a whisper in a hurricane. To hear God, you must intentionally create pockets of silence. This might mean leaving your phone in another room for the first hour of your day or turning off the radio during your commute. Silence is not empty; it is full of the possibility of God's presence.

2. Seek the Savior

Replace the "scrolling" habit with a "seeking" habit. When you feel the itch to check your notifications, let that be a prompt to check in with the Lord. Open a physical Bible. There is something profoundly different about feeling the pages in your hands, it’s tactile, it’s grounded, and there are no pop-up ads on the margins of the Gospel of John.

3. Strengthen the Soul

Faith is a muscle that grows with exercise. As you spend more time "unplugged," you’ll find your spiritual stamina increasing. You’ll be able to pray longer, meditate deeper, and listen more clearly. This strength will carry you through the pressures of social media when you do choose to log back on, giving you a firm foundation that isn't shaken by "likes" or "dislikes."

Unplugging for the Soul

Practical Steps for Digital Safety and Soul Care

As we navigate this digital world together, I always recommend tools that help keep our hearts and minds focused on what is pure and lovely. When you are consuming media, consider using family-safe clean versions via [VidAngel](https://www.vidangel.com) or “Enjoy Movies Your Way.” These services help you filter out content that might clutter your soul. Additionally, for online safety and accountability, I highly recommend [Bark](https://www.bark.us) and [Covenant Eyes](https://www.covenanteyes.com). These tools are excellent for creating a protective hedge around your digital life, ensuring that your "plugged-in" time doesn't compromise your "unplugged" faith.

Remember, you are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten. You are never alone. The Lord is as close as the mention of His name. Don't let the glow of a screen dim the light of His glory in your life. Take the step. Put the phone down. Open the Word. He is waiting to meet you in the quiet.
