Christian Living: What Does the Assemblies of God Believe? AG 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Faith in Memphis

The Assemblies of God believes the Bible is God’s inspired Word, salvation is found only through Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit empowers believers today. We focus on four "Cardinal Doctrines": salvation, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, divine healing, and the second coming of Christ.

Ever walked into a church and wondered, "Wait, what exactly do they believe here?" We’ve all been there. Whether you’re a long-time Memphian looking for a home in the 901 or someone joining us digitally from across the globe, understanding the "why" behind the "what" is the first step toward a deeper connection with God.

At First Assembly Memphis (FA Memphis), we are part of a global family called the Assemblies of God (AG). While we’re rooted in the heart of the Mid-South, our beliefs connect us to millions of believers worldwide. This "AG 101" guide is designed to break down our core values into simple, practical truths you can use in your daily walk.

The Foundation: The 16 Fundamental Truths

The Assemblies of God is built on 16 Fundamental Truths. These aren't just rules; they are the biblical guardrails that keep our faith anchored in Christ. Below is a simplified look at what these truths mean for your life today.

The Bible Says...

The Bible

It is God's inspired, infallible Word.

You can trust the Bible for every life decision.

He is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You have access to divine power to overcome.

Divine Healing

God cares about your physical and emotional pain.

The "Core Four" Cardinal Doctrines

While all 16 truths matter, we often highlight four as our "Cardinal Doctrines." These are the pillars of the Pentecostal experience that we celebrate every Sunday at FA Memphis and every day through Boundless Online Church.

1. Salvation: The Starting Point

Salvation is the cornerstone. It means that through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, our broken relationship with God is restored. It’s not about being "perfect" before you come to church; it’s about recognizing we all need a Savior and receiving His grace.

2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Power for Living

This is one of our most distinct beliefs. We believe that after you are saved, there is a subsequent experience called the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This isn't just a theological term, it's a real empowerment that helps you witness to others and live a bold, Christ-centered life. We believe the initial physical evidence of this is speaking in other tongues, as seen in the New Testament.

3. Divine Healing: God as Our Healer

We believe that the same Jesus who healed the blind and the lame in the Gospels is still at work today. Whether it’s a physical ailment, a mental health struggle, or a broken heart, we believe in the power of prayer for healing. It’s a privilege for every believer to ask God for a miracle.

4. The Second Coming: Our Blessed Hope

Life is full of challenges, but we live with a "Blessed Hope." We believe Jesus is coming back again to gather His Church. This truth gives us the urgency to share the Gospel and the peace to know that, in the end, God makes all things new.

Why This Matters in Memphis and Beyond

Being a "Memphis-hearted" church means we take these big theological ideas and put them into action in the 901. From Bartlett to Cordova and downtown to the suburbs, we believe the Gospel should change our city.

At FA Memphis, we express these beliefs through:

  • Worship that honors God: Expressive, Spirit-led praise.

  • Strengthening Families: Dedicated ministries for kids and students.

  • Serving Our City: Reaching out to those in need throughout Shelby County.

But what if you aren't in Memphis? That’s where Boundless Online Church comes in. We believe the Kingdom of God has no borders. Whether you are homebound, traveling, or living in a different country, you are part of this spiritual family. Digital discipleship allows us to provide community and care to the international believer and the spiritually curious alike.

Definitions You Should Know

To help you navigate these concepts, here are a few brief "Definition Blocks":

  • Salvation: The act of being delivered from the power and penalty of sin through faith in Jesus Christ.

  • Sanctification: A lifelong process of being set apart from evil and becoming more like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Justification: Being declared "righteous" or "just" before God, as if you had never sinned, because of Christ's sacrifice.

  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit: An experience following salvation where the believer is filled with the Holy Spirit for power in life and ministry.

5 Practical Steps to Grow in Your Faith

If you're new to the Assemblies of God or just starting your journey with Jesus, here is how you can move forward this week:

  1. Read the Book of John: Start with the Gospels to see the heart of Jesus for yourself.

  2. Join a Community: Connection changes lives. Whether it's an in-person Life Group in Memphis or a digital group through Boundless, don't walk alone.

  3. Pray for Empowerment: Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and give you the strength you need for your specific situation.

  4. Attend a Service: Experience worship and biblical teaching firsthand. You can join us in Cordova or live-stream from anywhere.

  5. Ask Questions: Never be afraid to seek clarity. Our pastors and leaders are here to help you navigate your doubts and your growth.

One Step Closer to Jesus

At the end of the day, our doctrines aren't meant to be academic, they are meant to be transformative. Every truth we hold points back to a person: Jesus. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, looking for a community that feels like family, or searching for the "more" that life seems to be missing, the answers are found in Him.
