Christian Living: What Does the Bible Say About Dating? (Wisdom for Modern Relationships)

Navigating the dating world in 2026 can feel like walking through a digital minefield. Between the endless swipe-fatigue of apps, the sting of being "ghosted" after a promising connection, and the confusing mixed signals of "situationships," it’s easy to feel like the search for love is more of a chore than a blessing. If you’ve ever sat on your porch in Memphis or stared at your phone in a quiet apartment wondering if there is a better way, a "God’s way", to handle modern romance, you are not alone.

The truth is, the word "dating" doesn’t appear anywhere in the Bible. Thousands of years ago, marriage was often a family arrangement rather than a series of coffee dates and FaceTime calls. However, while the method of finding a spouse has changed, the manual for how we treat people and honor God has remained the same. Scripture provides a rock-solid foundation for relationships that can withstand the pressures of the modern world.

If you are feeling exhausted by the current dating culture, take a deep breath. God sees you, He loves you, and He has not forgotten your desire for companionship.

The Direct Answer: What Is the Biblical Goal?

While the Bible doesn't give us a "Top 10 Tips for Your Profile Bio," it does provide clear principles for our interactions. Biblical dating is a purposeful, God-centered process aimed at discerning whether a person is the right partner for a lifelong covenant marriage. It moves away from recreational "playing the field" and toward a pursuit of purity, character, and shared mission in Jesus Christ.

1. The Goal: Purpose-Driven vs. Recreational Dating

In today’s world, dating is often treated as a form of entertainment, something to do because we’re bored or because we want the validation of someone else’s attention. This is often called "recreational dating."

However, for the follower of Jesus, our time and our hearts are precious. The biblical perspective shifts from "What can I get out of this person?" to "Is this the person God is calling me to run the race of faith with?" When you date with the goal of marriage in mind, it changes everything. It changes who you say "yes" to, how much of your heart you give away too soon, and how you handle the "no."

Purpose-driven dating doesn't mean you have to decide if you want to marry someone by the end of the first date. It simply means you are dating with intentionality, honoring the other person as a brother or sister in Christ rather than a temporary distraction.

2. Purity is More than a Rule

We often hear about purity as a list of "don'ts." Don't do this, don't go there, don't touch that. but in the Bible, purity is actually a "do." It is the act of doing what honors the Holy Spirit who lives within you.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

Purity isn't just a boundary; it's a way to protect the heart God is preparing for your future.

Purity isn't just about physical boundaries; it’s about protecting your heart and the heart of the person you are dating. When we rush into physical or deep emotional intimacy without the protection of a covenant (marriage), we often end up with "soul ties" and baggage that make it harder to see clearly. Purity is God's way of saying, "I want to protect the best of you for the one who is willing to commit to all of you."

3. The "Unequally Yoked" Principle

One of the most frequent questions we receive at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org is: “Does it really matter if they aren't a Christian if they are a 'good person'?”

The Bible is very clear on this. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers." To be "yoked" refers to two oxen tied together to pull a plow. If one ox wants to go left toward the things of God and the other wants to go right toward the things of the world, the plow goes nowhere, and both animals end up exhausted and hurt.

Shared values are the bedrock of a lasting relationship. If Jesus is the center of your life, but only a "nice idea" to the person you are dating, you will eventually hit a wall when it comes to how you spend your money, how you raise your children, and how you handle life's inevitable crises. Look for someone who isn't just a "fan" of Jesus, but a "follower" of Jesus.

4. Character over Chemistry

We live in a culture that worships "the spark." We wait for that lightning-bolt feeling of chemistry to tell us we've found "the one." While attraction is a beautiful gift from God, chemistry is a terrible compass. Chemistry can be felt for people who are toxic, dishonest, or unfaithful.

Scripture points us toward character.

  • Look for the Fruit of the Spirit: Galatians 5:22-23 lists love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

  • Look for Integrity: Proverbs 31 describes a person of noble character whose "worth is far above rubies."

Chemistry vs Character: Chemistry opens the door, but Character builds the home.

Chemistry is what gets you through the first three months; character is what gets you through the next fifty years. Ask yourself: Does this person keep their word? How do they treat people who can do nothing for them? Do they have a heart for God when no one is watching?

5. The Role of Community: Don't Date in the Dark

Isolation is one of the greatest dangers in modern dating. When you date in a bubble, it’s easy to ignore red flags and "gaslight" yourself into thinking things are better than they are.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that relationships thrive in the light of community. Whether it’s a mentor, a virtual small group, or a group of trusted friends, you need people who can see what you might be missing. If the people who love God and love you the most are concerned about your relationship, listen to them. God often uses the "body of Christ" to provide the discernment we lack when our emotions are high.

3 Practical Boundaries for Every Christian Couple

If you want to honor God in your dating life, start with these three simple boundaries:

  1. The Emotional Pace: Don't share your deepest trauma and life secrets on the second date. Guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23) by letting emotional intimacy grow at the same speed as commitment.

  2. The "Late Night" Rule: Nothing good happens after midnight when you’re alone together. Set a "curfew" for hanging out at each other's homes to avoid temptation and keep your intentions clear.

  3. The Community Check: Introduce the person you are dating to your "spiritual family" early on. If you’re part of our virtual Bible studies at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org, talk about what you’re learning. See if they lean in or pull away.

A Prayer for Your Journey

Lord, thank You that I am never alone. You see my heart and my desire for a partner. Give me the wisdom to prioritize character over chemistry and the strength to honor You with my body and my heart. Help me to trust Your timing and to find my primary identity in being Your child. Lead me to a community that supports me and keeps me centered on You. Amen.
