Christian Living: What Does the Bible Say About Spiritual Warfare?

Jul 22
5 min read

Have you ever had one of those weeks where it feels like everything is working against you? It isn’t just that your car broke down or your boss was grumpy; it’s a deeper sense of heaviness. Maybe you feel a sudden wave of discouragement that doesn't match your circumstances, or a conflict in your family that seems to escalate out of nowhere.

Sometimes, life feels like an uphill battle because it actually is. As Christians, we believe that there is more to our world than what we can see, touch, and measure. Beyond the physical reality of our daily schedules, there is a spiritual dimension where a very real struggle is taking place.

If you have been feeling exhausted, targeted, or simply confused by the weight of the world lately, you aren’t losing your mind. You are likely experiencing what the Bible calls spiritual warfare. The good news is that while the battle is real, the victory has already been won.

The Reality of the Battle

When we talk about spiritual warfare, it’s easy to drift into one of two extremes. Some people see a demon behind every bush and blame the enemy for every stubbed toe. Others live as if the spiritual world doesn't exist at all, trying to solve spiritual problems with purely physical solutions.

The Bible invites us into a balanced, sober middle ground. In the book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul pulls back the curtain to show us what is really going on:

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Ephesians 6:12)

This is a life-changing realization: People are not the enemy.

The person who hurt you, the politician you disagree with, or the family member who pushes your buttons: they are not the ultimate source of the struggle. When we recognize that the battle is spiritual, we can stop fighting people and start standing in the strength that God provides.

Understanding the Three Fronts of Warfare

In the Assemblies of God tradition and broader biblical teaching, we recognize that spiritual warfare usually happens on three main fronts: the world, the flesh, and the devil.

  1. The World: This isn't the physical planet, but the "system" of values and behaviors that opposes God. It is the constant pressure to conform to culture rather than Christ.

  2. The Flesh: This is our own fallen nature. It is the internal tug-of-war where our old habits and selfish desires try to pull us away from the life God has for us.

  3. The Devil: This is our personal adversary. Peter describes him as a "roaring lion" looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). His primary tactics are deception, accusation, and temptation.

The enemy rarely shows up with a pitchfork. Instead, he shows up with a whisper of doubt ("Does God really love you?"), a flash of old shame ("You’ll never change"), or a lure of "harmless" compromise. Spiritual warfare is the daily process of recognizing these influences and choosing to align ourselves with God's truth instead.

How to Put on the Full Armor of God

If we are in a battle, we need protection. In Ephesians 6, Paul uses the imagery of a Roman soldier to describe the spiritual "armor" God has given us. This isn't just a metaphor for a Sunday school song; these are practical spiritual postures we can take every day.

The Belt of Truth

Truth is the foundation. Without the belt, the rest of the armor falls off. In a world of "your truth" and "my truth," spiritual victory starts by anchoring ourselves in God's truth. When the enemy lies to you about your worth or your future, you check those lies against the Word of God.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

The breastplate protects the heart. We don’t wear this armor because we are perfect; we wear it because Jesus is. His righteousness covers our failures. When you feel the sting of accusation, you can stand firm knowing that your standing with God is based on what Christ did, not what you’ve done.

The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

Ever noticed how a lack of peace makes you feel shaky? These "shoes" give us a firm footing. When we are rooted in the peace of God, we aren't easily knocked over by the chaos of the news or the stress of our jobs.

The Shield of Faith

The enemy likes to throw "flaming arrows": sudden thoughts of fear, lust, or despair. Faith is the shield that catches them. Faith isn't a feeling; it’s a choice to trust God’s character even when the circumstances look dark.

The Helmet of Salvation

The battleground is often the mind. The enemy wants to make you doubt your salvation or your identity in Christ. The helmet protects your thoughts, reminding you that you belong to God and your future is secure in Him.

The Sword of the Spirit

This is our only offensive weapon: the Word of God. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He didn't argue with his feelings; He quoted Scripture. Learning the Bible is like sharpening your sword; it gives you the exact words you need to shut down the enemy's lies.

Living From Victory, Not For It

The most important thing to remember about spiritual warfare is that we are not fighting for victory. We are fighting from the victory that Jesus already won on the Cross.

Colossians 2:15 tells us that Jesus "disarmed the powers and authorities" and "made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." This means the enemy is a defeated foe. He has no authority over you unless you give it to him.

You don't have to live in fear. You don't have to be obsessed with demons or darkness. When you focus on the light of Jesus, the shadows naturally recede. As it says in 1 John 4:4, "The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."

Practical Steps for Your Week

How do you practically engage in this battle? Here are three simple ways to "stand firm" today:

  • Watch Your Intake: If you are filling your mind with 24/7 news cycles or social media comparison, your "shield of faith" is going to feel heavy. Balance your intake with Scripture.

  • Identify the Lie: Next time you feel a sudden surge of anxiety or shame, ask yourself: Is this from God? If it produces condemnation and fear, it’s not from Him. Reject the lie and speak the truth out loud.

  • Pray in the Spirit: Prayer is how we "fasten" the armor. You don't have to use fancy words. Simply saying, "Jesus, I trust You with this situation," is a powerful act of spiritual warfare.

A Prayer for Strength

Lord, thank You that I am never alone in the struggle. Thank You that You have already won the victory. Today, I choose to put on Your armor. I take up the shield of faith and the sword of Your Word. Help me to see people through Your eyes and to stand firm against the lies of the enemy. I rest in Your peace today. Amen.
