Christian Living: What Happens When You Worship Before You Check Your Phone?

The blue light hits your eyes before you’ve even had a chance to blink. Within thirty seconds of waking, you’ve processed an email from your boss, a tragic headline from halfway across the world, and three social media posts that make you feel like you’re already behind in life. Sound familiar? For many of us in the 901 and around the globe, the smartphone has become the modern "altar" we visit first every morning. But there is a more excellent way.
What happens when you worship before you check your phone? Choosing worship first anchors your soul in God’s peace and presence before the world’s noise can dictate your mood. This spiritual discipline replaces morning anxiety with divine focus, prioritizes the Holy Spirit’s leadership over digital distractions, and ensures your heart is aligned with eternal truth rather than temporary trends.
The Battle for the First Fruit of Your Day
In the ancient world, the concept of "first fruits" was a sacred principle. It meant giving the very best and the very first of your harvest to God as an act of trust and honor. Today, our "harvest" is our time, our attention, and our mental energy. When we reach for our phones before we reach for our Bibles, we are inadvertently giving the "first fruits" of our day to the algorithm, the inbox, and the world’s chaos.
But the Spirit calls us to a different rhythm.
Worship isn't just something we do in a sanctuary on Sunday mornings; it is the orientation of the heart. When you choose to whisper a prayer of thanks, sing a song of praise, or open the Scriptures before you tap that glass screen, you are reclaiming your mind. You are telling your soul, "God is the center of this day, not my notifications."

The Biblical Mandate for Morning Devotion
The writers of the Bible understood the power of the morning. They knew that the way you start your day often determines the trajectory of your entire life.
Consider Psalm 63:1: "O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water."
Notice the word "earnestly." In the original language, this often carries the connotation of seeking God early, at the break of dawn. David wasn't waiting until he had finished his "to-do" list to talk to God. He knew that the world is a "dry and weary land," and if he didn't drink from the fountain of God’s presence first, he would be spiritually dehydrated by noon.
Likewise, Psalm 5:3 reminds us: "In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly."
There is a divine expectancy that comes when we seek God in the quiet. When we check our phones first, we wait expectantly for updates. When we worship first, we wait expectantly for God.
Why Your Brain and Spirit Both Need This
There is a psychological reason why checking your phone first thing feels so draining. When you wake up, your brain is transitioning from a resting state to an alert state. Flooding it immediately with social media or news triggers a "fight or flight" response before you’ve even put your feet on the floor. You are starting your day in a state of reactive stress.
Spiritual discipline offers the antidote.
Lamentations 3:22-23 gives us a beautiful promise: "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

When you worship first, you are stepping into those "new mercies." You are allowing the Holy Spirit to wash away the failures of yesterday and the anxieties of tomorrow. You are entering a state of proactive peace.
5 Spiritual Benefits of a Worship-First Morning
You Receive Divine Direction: When your first input is the Word of God, you gain a lens through which to view everything else. Decisions that seemed overwhelming suddenly find clarity under the light of Scripture.
You Build Spiritual Resilience: Worship shifts your focus from your problems to God’s power. This builds a "spiritual muscle" that helps you stay calm when the inevitable stresses of the day arise.
You Break the Dopamine Loop: The phone is designed to be addictive. By choosing God first, you are training your brain that your ultimate satisfaction comes from Christ, not a "like" or a comment.
You Invite the Holy Spirit to Lead: Prayer is an invitation. By talking to God first, you are essentially saying, "Holy Spirit, have Your way in my schedule, my conversations, and my heart today."
You Strengthen Your Family: If you have children or a spouse, they see your rhythm. A parent who starts the day in the Word models a life of discipleship that speaks louder than any sermon.
Defining the Discipline: What is Sanctification?
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we speak often of Sanctification. This is the ongoing process of being set apart for God’s use and becoming more like Jesus. Sanctification isn't just about what you don't do; it’s about what you do. Choosing worship over the phone is a practical act of sanctification. You are setting your morning apart as "holy" to the Lord.
The 7-Day "Faith Launch" Challenge
If you find yourself stuck in the "scroll-first" habit, don't beat yourself up. There is grace. But there is also an invitation to grow. We want to challenge our FA Memphis family and our Boundless Online community to a 7-day experiment.
The Rules:
Step 1: Leave your phone in another room or across the room at night.
Step 2: Do not touch the screen until you have spent at least 10 minutes in worship (prayer, Scripture, or worship music).
Step 3: Use a physical Bible if possible to avoid the temptation of notifications.
Step 4: Journal one thing God spoke to you or one thing you are grateful for.

A Closing Prayer for Your Morning
Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your mercies are new every morning. Today, I choose to give You the first fruit of my attention. I quiet the noise of the world and lean into Your voice. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit as I seek You. Let my life be a reflection of Your peace today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
How would your day change if the first voice you heard wasn't a news anchor or a social media influencer, but the Spirit of God?
