Christian Living: What on Earth: How Do We Understand Bible Prophecy Today?

Jul 9
5 min read

Life feels chaotic. The headlines are heavy, the world seems to be spinning faster every day, and it’s natural to look at the current state of things and ask, "What on earth is happening?"

How should a Spirit-filled believer view Bible prophecy in today's world?

Bible prophecy is not intended to be a source of fear or a tool for speculation; rather, it is the "Blessed Hope" of the church. For Spirit-filled believers, prophecy is a roadmap of God’s unchanging faithfulness, reminding us that Jesus is coming back, He is in total control, and we are called to live with urgent purpose until He returns.

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that understanding the future helps us live better in the present. Whether you are joining us from Cordova, Bartlett, or Arlington, or you’re part of our global family at Boundless Online Church, we believe the Spirit of God provides clarity in the midst of confusion.

The Four Pillars of Our Prophetic Hope

As an Assemblies of God (AG) community, our understanding of the end times is anchored in the 16 Fundamental Truths. We don't guess at the future; we lean into the Word. Our perspective is "premillennial," meaning we believe Jesus will return to earth to establish His kingdom of peace.

1. The Blessed Hope (The Rapture)

The first major event on the prophetic horizon is what we call the Blessed Hope. This isn't just a theological term; it’s an imminent promise.

Definition: The Blessed Hope The "Blessed Hope" refers to the resurrection of believers who have died and their "translation" (or rapture) together with those who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord. It is the sudden, joyful catching away of the Church to meet Jesus in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
Looking for the blessed hope... - Titus 2:13

For families in the 901 area, this truth changes the way we wake up on Monday morning. It means that no matter how difficult life in the city or the world gets, our ultimate citizenship is in heaven. This hope gives us the strength to face trials, knowing that "the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" (Romans 8:18).

2. The Millennial Reign of Christ

Following the events of the rapture and a period of tribulation, the Bible speaks of a literal, visible return of Christ to the earth. He won’t return alone; He will return with His saints to rule for a thousand years.

Definition: The Millennial Reign The literal 1,000-year period during which Jesus Christ will reign on earth in righteousness and peace. This reign will bring about the salvation of national Israel and establish universal peace across the globe.
He shall reign in peace. - Isaiah 11:6

Imagine a world where war is non-existent, justice is perfect, and the very nature of the earth is restored. This is the promise of the Millennium. It’s the "Thy Kingdom Come" we pray for every week, finally realized on earth as it is in heaven.

3. The Final Judgment

While we focus on hope, the Bible is also clear about accountability. The 15th Fundamental Truth of the AG addresses the Final Judgment. This is the moment when the wicked dead, those who have rejected the grace of God, will be raised and judged according to their works.

This isn't a topic we preach with glee; we preach it with a sense of urgency. It’s why we are so passionate about outreach in Memphis and digital discipleship through Boundless. We want everyone to have their name written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

4. The New Heavens and the New Earth

The prophetic story doesn't end with a judgment; it ends with a beginning. After the thousand-year reign and the final judgment, God will usher in a "perfect New Heavens and a New Earth."

Definition: New Heavens and New Earth The eternal state of the redeemed. It is a completely renewed creation where God dwells with His people forever. There will be no more tears, no more death, and no more pain (Revelation 21:1-4).

Why Prophecy Matters in the 901 (and Beyond)

You might wonder, "Why does a thousand-year reign matter when I’m just trying to get through the work week in Bartlett?"

Prophecy is meant to be practical. It should result in three specific shifts in our lives:

  1. A Shift in Perspective: When you know the end of the story, you don't panic in the middle of the chapter. Whether it's economic uncertainty or personal health struggles, the "Blessed Hope" reminds us that our story ends in victory.

  2. A Shift in Purity: The Apostle John wrote that everyone who has this hope in Him "purifies himself, just as He is pure" (1 John 3:3). Understanding that Jesus could return at any moment encourages us to live holy, Spirit-filled lives today.

  3. A Shift in Purpose: If the time is short, our mission is urgent. This is why First Assembly Memphis is committed to strengthening families and equipping leaders right here in Shelby County. It's why Boundless Online Church works to bridge the gap for those who are homebound, traveling, or seeking God from across the globe.

Prophecy isn’t about fear; it’s about a future with Him.

Living as "Ready" People

Being "Spirit-filled" isn't just about what happens inside the four walls of a building. It's about being empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses in our neighborhoods, from Millington to Germantown and to the ends of the earth.

Prophecy should move us toward prayer. It should move us toward sharing the Gospel with our neighbors. It should move us toward a deeper love for our families.
