Christian Living: When the Shepherd is Tired: Breaking the Silence on Mental Health in the Church

Mental health struggles, including anxiety and depression, are real challenges that affect both church leadership and believers. Breaking the silence starts with acknowledging that being 'tired' isn't a lack of faith, but a call for community and care. Boundless Online Church provides a safe space for prayer and support, reminding us that we are never alone in our struggles.

I have sat in many rooms with people who love Jesus deeply, yet find themselves struggling to get out of bed in the morning. I have looked into the eyes of leaders who pour everything into their congregations, only to find their own wells have run completely dry. There is a quiet heavy-heartedness that often goes unspoken in our sanctuaries and online groups, a feeling that if we admit we are struggling with anxiety or depression, we are somehow failing in our faith.

But I want to tell you something today: You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten. And most importantly, you are never alone. Whether you are leading a ministry or searching for God from behind a screen, your mental health matters to the Father.

The Question: Is My Struggle a Sign of Spiritual Failure?

One of the most common questions I hear is, "If I have the joy of the Lord, why do I feel so anxious?" or "If I am a leader, why am I so overwhelmed?" We often fear that admitting to mental health challenges suggests a lack of trust in God. We wonder if our "tiredness" is actually a spiritual deficit that we need to "pray away" or hide to protect our testimony.

The Answer: Restoring the Narrative

The truth is that mental health struggles are real challenges that affect both church leadership and believers. Breaking the silence starts with acknowledging that being 'tired' isn't a lack of faith, but a call for community and care. The human experience is complex, involving our spirits, our minds, and our bodies. Just as we would not see a broken leg as a lack of faith, we should not see a struggling mind as a spiritual defeat.

Boundless Online Church was built specifically for moments like these, for the homebound, the overwhelmed, and those quietly searching for Jesus from behind a screen. We provide a safe space where you can be honest about the weight you’re carrying without fear of judgment. Here, we believe that seeking help, whether through prayer, counseling, or medical care, is an act of stewardship over the life God gave you.

Elijah Rest

The Value: Integrating Faith and Care

When we look at the Bible, we see that some of God’s greatest servants walked through deep valleys of the mind. Look at Elijah in 1 Kings 19. After a massive spiritual victory, he found himself exhausted, afraid, and wishing for his life to end. God didn’t rebuke him for his "lack of faith." Instead, God provided for his physical needs, food and sleep, and then spoke to him in a gentle whisper. God met him in his exhaustion before He sent him back into his calling.

In our community, the Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. This means we stand firmly on the biblical authority that tells us God is our Healer, but we also recognize that God often works through the hands of doctors, counselors, and the support of a loving community. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and that salvation includes the wholeness of the person. We believe in Spirit-empowered living, which includes the power to seek help and the humility to lean on others.

If you are feeling the weight of anxiety or the fog of depression, don't let the silence isolate you. There is a bridge from isolation to connection, and it starts with a single step toward community.

Friday Families: A Digital Detox for the Soul

Since it's Friday, I want to share a practical step for you and your family. We live in a noisy digital world that often fuels our anxiety. This weekend, I want to encourage you to try a low-cost "Sabbath Shift."

Set aside a few hours to put the phones in a basket and engage in a digital detox. Go for a walk in a Memphis park, play a board game, or simply sit together and share what you're grateful for. This isn't just about "unplugging"; it's about making room for the "soul care" we all desperately need. When we quiet the noise of the world, it’s much easier to hear the "still small voice" of God reminding us that we are loved.
