Christian Living: Why a Personal Encounter with Jesus Will Change the Way You Live?

A personal encounter with Jesus Christ isn’t just a pleasant religious moment or a box to check on a Sunday morning, it is a structural renovation of the human heart. When you truly encounter the living God, you don't just change your "hobbies" or your "habits"; you change your entire orientation toward reality.
If you’ve ever walked through a Memphis summer, you know that the heat isn't just a suggestion; it’s something you feel in your bones. It changes how you move, how you breathe, and where you seek shelter. A personal encounter with Jesus is similar, but instead of exhausting you, it refines you. It’s the difference between hearing a song on a distant radio and standing in the front row of a concert where the bass thumps in your chest. One is information; the other is an experience.
Why do we feel so stuck before the encounter?
Let’s be honest: many of us spend years "going through the motions." We might know the stories, we might know the songs, but deep down, there is a lingering pain, a sense that life is just a series of fires we are trying to put out. We feel the pressure of the world telling us to "bow down" to anxiety, to compromise our integrity for a quick win, or to let our past mistakes define our future.
The pain of being "unrefined" is that we carry around a lot of "dross", the impurities of fear, resentment, and self-reliance that make our souls feel heavy. We find ourselves bowing to the idols of modern life: the need for approval, the pursuit of comfort at any cost, or the belief that we have to handle everything on our own.
But there is a better way. There is a fire that doesn't consume you, but instead, sets you free.

The Refiner’s Fire: Purification, Not Destruction
In the book of Malachi, we see a powerful image of God as a "Refiner’s Fire."
"But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like launderers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness." (Malachi 3:2-3, NKJV)
When we think of fire, we usually think of destruction. We think of things being turned to ash. But a refiner’s fire is different. A refiner sits over the metal, carefully watching the temperature. The goal isn't to destroy the silver; it’s to heat it up just enough so that the impurities rise to the top. The refiner then skims those impurities away until he can see his own reflection in the metal.
This is what a personal encounter with Jesus does. He doesn't come into your life to burn you down; He comes to burn away the things that aren't you, the things that are holding you back from the person He created you to be.
No Bowing Down: The Strength of the Fire
Once you’ve been through the Refiner’s fire, your perspective on the "furnaces" of life changes. We see this most clearly in the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3. They were faced with a choice: bow down to an idol or be thrown into a literal fiery furnace.
Their response is one of the most powerful testimonies in all of Scripture:
"If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up." (Daniel 3:17-18, NKJV)
This "No Bowing Down" spirit is the result of a refined faith. When you’ve had a personal encounter with Jesus, you realize that He is more real than the threat in front of you. You realize that even if the fire gets hot, you are not alone.

5 Key Takeaways: How a Personal Encounter Changes You

The "Fourth Man" is Waiting for You
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that no one is too far gone for the Refiner’s fire. Whether you are in Memphis, Tennessee, or watching from halfway across the world, the same Jesus who walked in that furnace is available to you today.
Maybe you feel like you’re in the middle of the fire right now. Maybe the "dross" of life feels like it's overwhelming you. We want you to know that you don't have to bow down to that weight. You can stand tall because the One who made you is the One who sustains you.
If you are looking for a place to process your questions, share your story, or find a community that understands the "grit and grind" of a faith-filled life, we invite you to join us. You can find virtual small groups, online Bible studies, and a community of people who are all being "refined" together at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.
A Short Prayer for You
Lord, thank You that You are the Great Refiner. Thank You that You don't leave us in our impurities, but You love us enough to lead us through the fire. I pray for the person reading this who feels the heat of the furnace today. Let them see the "Fourth Man" standing beside them. Give them the strength to not bow down to fear, but to stand firm in Your truth. Purify our hearts so that we reflect Your image to the world. Amen.
