Christian Living: Why Does God’s Refining Fire Change the Way You View Hardship?

You change the way you view hardship when you realize that God’s refining fire is designed to develop you, not destroy you. Instead of seeing trials as a sign of God’s absence, you begin to see them as evidence of His active, loving work to remove the "dross": the fear, pride, and compromise: from your life so that His character can shine through you.
Hardship is not a signal that you have failed; often, it is a sign that you are being prepared for a higher purpose.
We have all been there. You are walking through a season that feels too hot to handle. Maybe it’s a financial struggle in Memphis, a health crisis that won’t quit, or a relationship that is falling apart. Your first instinct is to ask, "Why is this happening to me?" or "Where is God in this mess?" It’s a natural human response to want to escape the heat.
But what if the heat isn't your enemy? What if the very thing you are trying to pray away is the thing God is using to make you unshakeable?
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that God is sovereign and that He uses every season of our lives to bring us closer to the image of Jesus Christ. This process is often called sanctification, but in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon when everything is going wrong, it just feels like fire.
Let’s look at how shifting your perspective from "punishment" to "purification" can change everything about how you live and lead.
The Purpose of the Fire: Purity, Not Punishment

When a goldsmith puts gold into the furnace, he isn't trying to get rid of the gold. He is trying to get rid of the impurities that make the gold weak and dull. This is exactly what the Prophet Malachi was talking about.
What the Bible Says About the Refiner
Malachi 3:3: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver."
1 Peter 1:7: "These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith: of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire: may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
Zechariah 13:9: "This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’"
In these verses, we see a God who sits with the metal. He doesn't throw it into the fire and walk away. He watches the temperature. He knows exactly how much heat is needed to bring the impurities to the surface so they can be skimmed off.
If you feel like the heat has been turned up in your life, remember that the Refiner is sitting right there with you. He is not trying to consume you; He is making you more valuable.
The "No Bowing Down" Choice: Staying Faithful in the Heat

The concept of the refining fire is perfectly illustrated in the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3. When the "culture" of Babylon demanded they bow to an idol, they chose to stand tall. Even when the king turned the furnace up seven times hotter, their answer was firm: "We will not bow."
This is the heart of the "No Bowing Down" theme we talk about so much here at Boundless Online Church. The world will constantly pressure you to compromise your values, to quiet your faith, or to blend in with the crowd to avoid the heat.
But here is the miracle: God didn’t stop them from going into the fire. He met them in the fire.
When you refuse to bow to cultural pressure, you might find yourself in a "furnace" of criticism or hardship. But that is exactly where you will see the "fourth man in the fire": Jesus Himself: walking beside you. Refined faith is faith that has decided that the presence of God is more important than the approval of man.
Memphis Faith: Resilience Built in the Furnace
Living in a city like Memphis, we know a thing or two about resilience. We are a people who have walked through seasons of struggle and come out with a soul-stirring strength that the world can't explain. Whether you are joining us from the 901 or from halfway across the globe, that same spirit of "Boundless" faith is available to you.
Hardship tries to tell you that your story is over. The refining fire says your story is just getting started. When we look at our community, we see people who have lost jobs but found their calling. We see families who walked through grief but found a new depth of compassion for others.
That is the power of the Gospel. It takes the "dross" of our pain and turns it into the "gold" of a testimony.
What Refined Faith Actually Looks Like

How do you know when the refining fire is doing its work? You start to notice changes in your heart that weren't there before.
Your Foundation Shifts: You stop relying on your bank account or your reputation for peace and start relying solely on the Word of God.
Your Compassion Increases: Because you have felt the heat, you can now walk with others who are in their own furnace without judging them.
Your Prayer Life Changes: Instead of just asking God to "fix it," you start asking Him to "use it."
You Stop Fearing the Future: You realize that if God was faithful in the last fire, He will be faithful in the next one.
Your Worship Becomes Honest: You don't just sing when things are good; you worship because God is good, even when the circumstances are hard.
This is the kind of faith that changes the world. It’s not a superficial, "everything is perfect" kind of faith. It is a deep, rugged, refined faith that can stand up to anything.
Practical Steps for the Furnace
If you are in a season of hardship right now, here are five practical ways to stay grounded while the fire is hot:
Stay in the Word: When life gets loud, you need to hear the voice of Truth. Spend time in the Psalms to see how David navigated his own trials.
Keep Your Community Close: Don't isolate. Join an online small group or reach out to a mentor. We were never meant to walk through the fire alone.
Name the Dross: Ask God, "What are You trying to show me?" Is it an area of pride? A lack of trust? Once you name it, you can surrender it.
Practice Gratitude: It sounds counterintuitive, but thanking God for His presence in the trial changes your brain chemistry and your spiritual outlook.
Focus on the Outcome: Remember that this is a season, not a sentence. The fire has an end date, but the character it builds in you will last forever.

FAQ: Understanding the Fire
Does God cause hardship? We live in a fallen world where hardship is a reality. While God does not always cause the pain, He is the Master of using what the enemy meant for evil and turning it for our good (Genesis 50:20). He never wastes a hurt.
How long does the refining process last? The process of sanctification lasts a lifetime, but specific "refining seasons" usually last until the specific lesson or purification God is working on is complete. Trust His timing.
What if I feel like I’m breaking? It’s okay to be honest with God. Jesus wept. David cried out in agony. The goal isn't to pretend you aren't hurting; the goal is to keep your eyes on the One who is holding you in the middle of the hurt.
Why do some people seem to have no fire? Don't compare your journey to someone else's highlight reel. Everyone walks through trials. Furthermore, a lack of resistance sometimes means you aren't moving. If you are facing heat because of your faith, take heart: it means you are a threat to the darkness.
A Prayer for the Person in the Fire
Lord, I thank You that You are the Great Refiner. Right now, I lift up my friend who feels the heat of hardship. I ask that You would give them the strength to stand tall and the courage to not bow to fear or despair. Let them feel Your presence walking beside them in the furnace. Skim off the impurities of doubt and anxiety, and let them come out of this season shining like pure gold. We trust Your hands and Your heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
