Christian Living: Why Must Believers Put Faith Over Politics in 2026?

Updated: 1 day ago

Boundless Blog 2 - Why Must Believers Put Faith Over Politics_Dr. Layne McDonald

Putting faith over politics in 2026 is essential because our primary citizenship is in heaven, not in a political party or a legislative act. When we prioritize biblical truth over cultural trends, we ensure that our testimony remains focused on Jesus Christ rather than the divisive spirit of the age. By choosing to love our neighbors without compromising our core convictions, we demonstrate that our loyalty belongs to the Kingdom of God first.

The year 2026 has brought unprecedented tension to our doorsteps. Between the heated debates surrounding the MAMDANI Act and the rising tide of Christian nationalism, it can feel like every conversation is a potential minefield. The MAMDANI Act, in particular, has sparked intense debate by targeting specific ideologies and religious groups, forcing many Christians to grapple with how to balance national security concerns with the biblical mandate to love the stranger and protect religious liberty for all.

We see the headlines, the social media firestorms, and the "us versus them" rhetoric daily. It is easy to get swept up in the idea that our faith must be a tool for a political agenda. However, when we look at the life of Jesus, we see a different path. He didn't come to take sides; He came to take over hearts. He refused to be the political revolutionary many expected, choosing instead to establish a Kingdom that is not of this world.

The Current Political Climate and the MAMDANI Act

The MAMDANI Act of 2026 has become a lightning rod for controversy. Named as a direct challenge to certain political figures, it seeks to restrict entry and citizenship based on political and religious ideologies like socialism and Islamic fundamentalism. For the believer, this legislation presents a complex challenge. While the Bible speaks to the importance of wise leadership and the role of government in maintaining order, it also emphasizes the dignity of every human being made in the image of God.

The "Christian nationalism" buzz has added fuel to the fire. This ideology often blurs the lines between American identity and Christian faith, sometimes suggesting that being a "good Christian" requires total alignment with a specific political platform. As followers of Christ, we must be careful. Our faith should inform our politics, but our politics should never define our faith.

Biblical Truth vs. Political Ideology

To navigate these waters, we must look through a biblical lens. The Word of God provides a foundation that is far more stable than any legislative bill or election cycle. Consider these truths:

Why "Love Isn’t About Bowing Down"

In today's culture, there is immense pressure to "bow down" to whatever the loudest voice demands. For some, that means bowing to secular ideologies that ignore God’s Word. For others, it means bowing to a political movement that uses the name of Christ to seek power. But love isn't about bowing down to these pressures.

True biblical love is firm. It is a love that stands for truth while remaining compassionate. When we refuse to bow down to political idols, we are actually practicing the highest form of love. We are showing the world that there is something better, a King who is perfectly just and a Kingdom that is perfectly inclusive of all who believe.

A Prayer for Clarity

Lord, we thank You that You are the King of kings. In a world full of noise and division, help us to keep our eyes on You. Give us the courage to stand for Your truth and the heart to love every person we meet. Teach us that love isn't about bowing down to the world, but about standing up for Your Kingdom. Amen.
