Communion: Remembering the Cross Together

Communion is a quiet moment in a loud world. It is a time when we stop everything. We look back at what Jesus did. We look inward at our own hearts. And we look forward to His return.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe this is more than a ritual. It is an ordinance: a direct command from Jesus. It is a holy moment where the physical meets the spiritual. Whether you are sitting in a living room or a hospital bed, this is for you.
The Upper Room
Imagine the scene two thousand years ago. The room was simple. The mood was heavy but filled with love. Jesus sat with His friends for one last meal.
He knew what was coming. The cross was only hours away. Yet, He wasn't thinking about His own pain. He was thinking about us.
He took the bread and broke it. He took the cup and shared it. He gave us a way to remember Him forever.

Why We Practice Communion
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we call this an "ordinance." This means it is a practice established by Jesus Himself. It isn't a suggestion for some Christians. It is a gift for all believers.
According to AG Fundamental Truth #6, communion serves three main purposes. First, it is a memorial. We remember the suffering and death of Jesus. We don't just remember it as a fact in a book. We remember it as a sacrifice for our own sins.
Second, it is a symbol of our sharing in His divine nature. When we partake, we are reminded that His life is now in us. We are connected to Him in a deep, spiritual way.
Third, it is a prophecy. Every time we take communion, we declare a promise. We say that Jesus is coming back again. It is a meal that looks toward a future feast.
The Bread: His Body Broken
The bread is the first element. It represents the physical body of Jesus. He was beaten, bruised, and broken. He did this so that we could be made whole.
When we hold the bread, we think of His sacrifice. We think of the "stripes" He took for our healing. It is a reminder that God understands human suffering. He felt physical pain so He could meet us in ours.
As you eat the bread, remember that you are forgiven. The price has been paid in full. There is no debt left for you to carry.

The Cup: The New Covenant
Then comes the cup. It represents the fruit of the vine and the blood of Christ. In the Bible, blood represents life. Jesus poured out His life so we could have eternal life.
This is the "New Covenant." The old way of reaching God through perfect rules is over. The new way is through the grace of Jesus. His blood washes away every stain.
It doesn't matter where you have been. It doesn't matter what you have done. The cup represents a fresh start. It is the seal of God's promise to never leave you.
Examining the Heart
The Bible tells us to examine ourselves before we partake. This isn't meant to make us feel guilty. It is meant to make us honest.
Take a moment to talk to God. Are there things you need to let go of? Is there someone you need to forgive? Communion is a great time to clear the air with the Father.
We come to the table not because we are perfect. We come because we are forgiven. The invitation is open to every follower of Christ.

One Body, Many Members
One of the most beautiful parts of communion is the "together" aspect. The word "communion" itself implies community. Even when we are online, we are participating as one body.
In the early church, they broke bread from house to house. They were united by one Spirit and one Lord. Today, Boundless Online Church continues that tradition. Digital walls cannot stop the unity of the Holy Spirit.
When you take the elements, you aren't alone. You are joined by millions of believers around the world. You are part of a family that spans every nation. We are many members, but we are one body in Christ.
Until He Comes
There is a phrase we often say during communion: "Until He comes." This reminds us that our story doesn't end at the cross. It doesn't even end at the empty tomb.
It ends with Jesus returning for His people. Communion is a rehearsal for the Great Banquet. It keeps our eyes on the horizon. It gives us hope when the world feels dark.
Every time we participate, we are saying, "Come, Lord Jesus." We are declaring that this world is not our final home. We are waiting for the day when we will see Him face to face.

How to Participate at Home
You don't need a special building to remember Jesus. You can prepare for communion right where you are. All you need is a piece of bread or a cracker. All you need is a small cup of juice or water.
Set aside a few minutes of quiet. Read the words of 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. Pray and thank God for His grace. Then, partake with a heart full of gratitude.
We encourage you to make this a regular part of your life. It keeps the sacrifice of Jesus at the center of your focus. It grounds you in the truth of the Gospel.
