Community Connection : Why Is Strength in Numbers Important for Our Faith?

A Message from FA Memphis

Strength in numbers is vital for our faith because God designed us to live in community, reflecting His own nature and providing us with the resilience, encouragement, and accountability we need to navigate life’s challenges and fulfill His purpose for our lives. When we walk together, we don’t just share the load; we multiply our impact and find the spiritual stamina to keep going when things get tough.

Hey friends, it’s Dr. Layne McDonald here. As the Online and Connection Pastor at Boundless Online Church, I spend a lot of time thinking about how we connect. We live in a world that is more "connected" than ever through technology, yet many of us feel more isolated than ever before.

Have you ever felt like you were trying to run a marathon through deep sand? Everything feels heavy, your legs are burning, and the finish line seems to keep moving further away. That is what life can feel like when we try to do it alone. But here’s the good news: you weren’t meant to run alone. In fact, you weren't designed to.

The Original Blueprint for Connection

From the very beginning, the Bible makes it clear that "it is not good for man to be alone." This isn’t just about marriage; it’s about the human soul’s need for companionship and community. At Boundless Online Church, we believe that the "Body of Christ" isn't just a metaphor, it's a functioning reality.

Think about it this way: God Himself exists in a community, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Since we are made in His image, that desire for connection is hardwired into our DNA. When we isolate ourselves, we aren't just being "introverted" or "independent"; we are actually working against our own design.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we emphasize the importance of the local and global church. We believe that we are better together. Whether you are tuning in from a living room in Memphis or a coffee shop in Mumbai, you are part of a diverse, global family. Our community is a beautiful tapestry of Black, White, Asian, Indian, and Spanish brothers and sisters, all bringing unique perspectives to the table.

The Wisdom of Two

There’s an old African proverb that says, "If you want to travel fast, travel alone. If you want to travel far, go together."

We see this principle throughout the New Testament. Jesus didn’t send His disciples out as "lone wolves." He sent them out in pairs. Why? Because He knew the road would be hard. He knew they would face rejection, fatigue, and doubt. When one was tired, the other could offer a word of encouragement. When one was confused, the other could help bring clarity.

Later, we see leaders like Paul traveling with Barnabas, Silas, or Timothy. Even the greatest missionary in history knew he needed a partner. Community isn't a sign of weakness; it’s a strategy for success. At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online because we know that growth happens best when we have others walking alongside us.

The Cord of Three Strands

One of the most famous verses about community is Ecclesiastes 4:12: "Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

Imagine a single thread of cotton. It’s easy to snap, right? Now imagine three of those threads braided together. The strength doesn't just triple; it increases exponentially because the threads support and reinforce each other.

In our faith journey, those "strands" are you, your community, and the Holy Spirit. When we bind ourselves together in Christ, we create a resilience that can withstand the storms of life. If you’re going through a divorce, a health crisis, or a period of intense doubt, having those other "strands" wrapped around you is what keeps you from snapping.

Carrying the Weight Together

The Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians 6:2 to "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Sometimes, the burdens we carry are too heavy for one set of shoulders. Maybe it’s the weight of grief, the stress of a job, or the struggle with a persistent sin. When we bring those things into a safe, loving community, the weight is distributed.

I’ve seen this happen time and again in our Sunday Night Bible Study. Someone will share a struggle, and suddenly, three other people chime in saying, "I’ve been there," or "I’m praying for you right now." The burden doesn’t necessarily disappear, but it becomes manageable because you aren’t carrying it alone.

The Digital Frontier of Community

You might be wondering, "Can I really find that kind of deep community online?"

The answer is a resounding yes. Community isn't about physical proximity; it’s about heart proximity. At Boundless Online Church, we use technology to bridge the gaps that distance creates. We’ve seen deep friendships form between people thousands of miles apart. We’ve seen people find healing and hope through a screen because the Holy Spirit isn't limited by bandwidth.

Our mission is simple: We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. We do this by creating spaces where you can be known, loved, and challenged. Whether it’s through our live worship services or our interactive studies, we are building a "cord of many strands" that spans the globe.

Why We Need You

The "strength in numbers" concept isn't just about what you get from the community; it’s about what you give.

You have a unique story, a specific set of gifts, and a perspective that someone else needs to hear. There is someone in our community right now who is struggling with exactly what you’ve already overcome. When you show up, when you share your heart, and when you offer a prayer, you are becoming the "second strand" for someone else.

We need your voice. We need your faith. We need your presence.

A Prayer for Connection

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of community. Thank You that You never intended for us to walk this path alone. I pray for the person reading this who feels isolated or overwhelmed. Remind them that they are part of a larger family. Give them the courage to reach out and connect. Help us all to be "cords of three strands" for one another, lifting each other up and carrying each other's burdens. In Jesus' name, Amen.
