Courage for New Beginnings: Stepping Out in Faith

Jul 9
5 min read

Have you ever stood at the edge of something new, a fresh chapter, an unfamiliar path, a door you've never walked through, and felt your heart pound with a mixture of excitement and fear? Maybe it's a new job, a move to a different city, a relationship, or even a spiritual commitment you've been putting off. Whatever it is, new beginnings can feel both thrilling and terrifying.

Here's the beautiful truth: You were never meant to step into the unknown alone.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that courage isn't the absence of fear, it's moving forward despite the fear because you know Who walks beside you. Today, let's explore what it means to step out in faith, discover practical ways to take that first brave step, and be reminded that you are deeply loved, never forgotten, and never alone.

Welcome home, friend. Let's dive in together.

📖 Bible Study: Joshua 1:9 – God's Command to Be Courageous

One of the most powerful verses about courage comes from the book of Joshua. After Moses died, Joshua was tasked with leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, a massive, intimidating responsibility. Can you imagine the weight on his shoulders?

Yet God spoke directly to Joshua's fear:

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." , Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
Courage in God's Presence

Notice something remarkable here: God doesn't just suggest courage, He commands it. Why? Because He knows something we often forget: Our courage isn't rooted in our own abilities. It's rooted in His presence.

When God says "Do not be afraid," He immediately follows it with a promise: "I will be with you wherever you go." This isn't about mustering up self-confidence or pretending you have it all figured out. It's about recognizing that the Creator of the universe, the One who parted seas, moved mountains, and raised the dead, promises to walk with you into every new season.

Reflection Questions for Your Heart:

  • What new beginning are you facing right now that feels overwhelming?

  • How does knowing God is with you change your perspective on that challenge?

  • What would it look like to obey God's command to "be strong and courageous" this week?

As Scripture reminds us: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."

🌅 Spiritual Transformation: Becoming New in Christ

New beginnings aren't just about external changes, they're about internal transformation. The apostle Paul writes one of the most hope-filled verses in all of Scripture:

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" , 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

Did you catch that? In Christ, you are a new creation. Your past mistakes, failures, regrets, they don't define you anymore. God's grace wipes the slate clean and invites you to start fresh.

And here's even more encouragement:

"Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness." , Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV)

Every single morning, God's mercies are renewed. That means today, yes, today: is an invitation to begin again. No matter what yesterday looked like, you have a fresh opportunity to step forward in faith.

New Mercies Every Morning

🛠️ Life Hack: The "First Step" Technique

Let's get practical for a moment. Sometimes the biggest obstacle to a new beginning isn't the journey itself: it's simply starting. Fear of the unknown can paralyze us into inaction.

Here's a simple life hack that can change everything:

The "First Step" Technique

  1. Identify one thing you've been afraid to start. (A project, a conversation, a commitment, a prayer life, joining a group: anything.)

  2. Break it down to the smallest possible first task. Not the whole mountain: just the first pebble.

  3. Do that one small thing today.

That's it. Just one tiny step.

Want to start reading your Bible more? Open it and read one verse today. Want to join a small group at Boundless? Send one message introducing yourself. Want to reconnect with someone you've drifted from? Send a simple "thinking of you" text.

Progress beats perfection every time. And often, that first small step creates momentum that carries you further than you imagined.

As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

You don't need to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step: and trust God to illuminate the next one.

🎬 Movie Review: "The Lion King" – Finding Courage to Step Into Your Calling

Sometimes the most profound spiritual lessons come from unexpected places: like a beloved animated film about a lion cub named Simba.

"The Lion King" (1994) tells the story of a young lion who runs away from his destiny after tragedy strikes. Haunted by guilt and shame, Simba hides in exile, convinced he's not worthy of his calling. But through the encouragement of friends and a powerful encounter with his father's memory, Simba finds the courage to return home and embrace who he was always meant to be.

Take the First Step in Faith

Sound familiar? How many of us have run from our calling because of past mistakes? How many of us have believed the lie that we're disqualified from God's purposes?

The scene where Mufasa's spirit speaks to Simba: "Remember who you are": echoes what God continually whispers to His children. You are loved. You are chosen. You have a purpose.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 Stars)

Whether you're watching it for the first time or the hundredth, "The Lion King" is a beautiful reminder that it's never too late to step into your true identity and calling. God is waiting for you to come home.

✨ Your Daily Affirmation

Speak this over yourself today: and every day you need a reminder of who you are in Christ:

"I am bold and courageous because the Lord my God is with me wherever I go."

Write it on a sticky note. Set it as your phone wallpaper. Say it out loud in the mirror. Let this truth sink deep into your spirit. You are not walking alone. The God of angel armies goes before you, beside you, and behind you.
