Courage in the Unknown

Have you ever stood at the edge of something new: a decision, a chapter, a leap of faith: and felt your heart pound with uncertainty? Maybe it's a new job, a difficult conversation, a move to a new city, or simply the courage to try again after failure. That feeling? It's completely normal. And here's the beautiful truth: you don't have to have it all figured out to move forward.

Welcome home, friend. Whether you're joining us from across the globe or right here in Memphis, you're never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God. Today, Pastor Dr. Layne McDonald and our Boundless Online Church family want to walk with you through what it really means to have courage in the unknown.

Let's dive in together.

Bible Study: Joshua 1:9 : Be Strong and Courageous

In My Weakness God Is Able

One of the most powerful verses about courage comes from the book of Joshua. After Moses died, Joshua was tasked with leading the Israelites into the Promised Land: a land they'd never seen, filled with unknowns, challenges, and giants. Talk about pressure!

But God didn't leave Joshua to figure it out alone. He spoke these words directly to him:

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." : Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

Let's unpack this for a moment:

  • "Have I not commanded you?" : This isn't a suggestion. God is reminding Joshua (and us) that courage is a choice we're called to make.

  • "Be strong and courageous" : Strength and courage aren't about the absence of fear. They're about trusting God despite the fear.

  • "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged" : Fear and discouragement will knock on your door. You don't have to let them in.

  • "For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go" : This is the game-changer. You're not alone. Ever.

Pastor Dr. Layne McDonald often reminds us: "Courage isn't about knowing what's ahead: it's about knowing Who goes ahead of you." God doesn't ask us to be fearless. He asks us to be faithful. And when we step out in faith, He meets us right there in the unknown.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What "Promised Land" is God calling you toward right now?

  2. What fears are holding you back from stepping forward?

  3. How does knowing God goes before you change your perspective?

Life Hack: The 5-Second Rule

Here's a practical tool that can help you act before fear takes over: The 5-Second Rule, popularized by author Mel Robbins.

It's simple: When you have an impulse to act on a goal or make a move toward something important, count backward: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1: and then physically move or speak before your brain talks you out of it.

Why does this work? Our brains are wired to protect us from discomfort, which often means they'll convince us to stay in our comfort zones. But courage lives outside that zone. By counting down and acting quickly, you interrupt the fear response and take control.

Try it this week:

  • Feel prompted to pray for a stranger? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1: go.

  • Need to have that hard conversation? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1: start.

  • Want to join a Boundless group but feel nervous? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1: sign up.

Pair this with Joshua 1:9, and you've got a powerful combo: count down, step out, and trust that God is already there.

Movie Review: "Moana" : Finding Courage to Step Into the Unknown

Hand-drawn illustration of a diverse young woman on a boat at sunset, symbolizing courage to step into the unknown.

If you haven't watched Disney's Moana (2016), add it to your family movie night list immediately. This animated gem is more than catchy songs and stunning visuals: it's a beautiful story about courage, identity, and answering a call that feels bigger than yourself.

Moana is the daughter of a village chief on the island of Motunui. Her people have lived safely within the reef for generations, but something is dying: the coconuts, the fish, the land itself. Moana feels a pull toward the ocean, a calling to venture beyond the reef and restore the heart of Te Fiti to save her island.

Here's what makes this movie resonate with faith:

Favorite Quote:"I am Moana of Motunui. You will board my boat, sail across the sea, and restore the heart of Te Fiti."

When Moana declares who she is, everything changes. Friend, do you know who you are in Christ? You are chosen. You are loved. You are called.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (A must-watch for all ages!)

Your Biblical Affirmation

Encouragement Gold Background Poster

Speak this over yourself today: and every day this week:

"I step out in faith, knowing God goes before me."

Write it on a sticky note. Set it as your phone wallpaper. Say it out loud when fear creeps in. This isn't just positive thinking: it's a declaration rooted in the truth of God's Word. He has already gone ahead of you. Your job is simply to follow.

Family & Friend Time: Host a "Challenge Night"

Church Gathering

Want to build courage as a family or friend group? Try hosting a Challenge Night: an evening where everyone tries something new together!

How It Works:

  1. Pick a Theme: Cooking a new cuisine, learning a TikTok dance, trying a new board game, doing a DIY craft, or even having everyone share something vulnerable.

  2. Embrace the Awkward: The point isn't perfection: it's stepping outside your comfort zone together.

  3. Cheer Each Other On: Celebrate every attempt, every fail, every laugh. Courage grows in community.

  4. End with Reflection: Share one thing you learned about yourself. Pray together and thank God for the gift of trying new things.

Why This Matters: When we practice courage in small, fun ways, it builds the muscle for bigger moments. Plus, it creates memories and deepens connection. Win-win!
