Daily Parent Devotional - Day 1: Finding Your Anchor in the Chaos

Welcome to Day 1 of our "Growing Faith in the Chaos of Parenting" series. If you’ve clicked on this, chances are your morning (or afternoon, or night shift) has already been a bit of a whirlwind. Maybe you’re reading this over a lukewarm cup of coffee while a toddler negotiates for more screen time, or perhaps you’re catching a rare quiet second in the car before heading into work.

Wherever you are, take a deep breath.

Parenting is a beautiful calling, but let’s be real, it is often loud, messy, and utterly exhausting. It can feel like you’re trying to build a house in the middle of a hurricane. But today, we want to talk about the Anchor. Not a "self-help" anchor or a "five tips to a better life" anchor, but a real, steadying presence that doesn't move when the storm hits.

The Reality of the Chaos

We’ve all been there. The 5:00 PM rush where everyone is hungry, the baby is crying, and you just realized you forgot to defrost the chicken. Or maybe it’s the mental load, the endless worrying about your child’s future, their safety, or their faith.

For many of us, especially single parents or those working irregular shifts, the chaos isn't just a moment in the day; it’s the atmosphere of our lives. It’s easy to feel like you’re drifting. When you’re tired, your spiritual life is often the first thing to hit the back burner. We think, "I'll pray when things calm down," or "I'll read my Bible when the kids are finally in bed."

But here’s the secret: the chaos might not go away. At least, not today. That’s why we need an anchor that works in the storm, not just after it passes.

The Word: Psalm 46:1-5

Let’s look at a passage of Scripture that was written for people who felt like their world was falling apart.

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea... God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns." (Psalm 46:1-2, 5)

Notice that the Psalmist doesn't say the mountains won't move. He says even if they move, even if the very earth gives way under your feet, you don't have to fear.

Why? Because God is a "very present help." He isn't a distant God watching from a balcony. He is in the kitchen with you. He is in the breakroom at 2:00 AM. He is in the middle of the school drop-off line.

The Only Source of Peace: Jesus

When we talk about finding an anchor, we aren't talking about a "zen" feeling or a temporary escape. We are talking about the person of Jesus Christ.

In the middle of our parenting struggles, we often feel the weight of our own mistakes. We lose our tempers. We feel guilty for not being "enough." This is where the Gospel becomes our ultimate anchor.

The truth is, none of us are "enough" on our own. We are all sinful and in need of grace. But Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't live and died on the cross for our sins. He took the chaos of our brokenness upon Himself so that we could have peace with God.

Jesus is our only source of true peace. He didn't just come to give us parenting advice; He came to give us Himself. When you feel like you're failing, remember that your standing with God isn't based on how well you parented today. It’s based on what Jesus has already done for you. That is a rock-solid foundation that no tantrum or work deadline can shake.

If you’re looking for a place to dive deeper into this peace, we invite you to join us for our Sunday Live Worship. It's a space where we can gather digitally and refocus our hearts on the one who holds it all together.

Practical Guidance: The 5-Minute Anchor

I know what you’re thinking: "Penny, that sounds great, but I literally don't have five minutes to myself."

I hear you. But finding time for God doesn't always mean an hour of silent meditation in a cathedral. For a busy parent, it’s about "micro-moments" of intentionality. Here is how you can find 5 minutes of prayer in a house that never stops:

  1. The "Bathroom Floor" Prayer (1 Minute): Sometimes the only place you can be alone is the bathroom. Instead of scrolling on your phone, take 60 seconds to tell God, "Lord, I'm overwhelmed. Please be my strength today."

  2. The "Red Light" Meditation (2 Minutes): If you’re driving, use the red lights. Instead of getting frustrated, use that pause to recite one verse. Try: "God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved."

  3. The "Dishwater" Devotion (2 Minutes): While you’re scrubbing plates or folding that fifth load of laundry, talk to Jesus like He’s standing right there next to you. Tell Him what you’re worried about. Thank Him for His grace.

You can't afford not to spend this time with Him. It’s the difference between treading water and standing on a rock. For more ideas on integrating faith into your busy life, check out our blog for more resources.

A Word for the Shift-Workers and Single Parents

To those of you doing this on your own, or those of you whose "morning" starts when the sun is going down: God sees you.

Your schedule might not allow for a traditional "quiet time" at 6:00 AM, but God is not bound by a clock. Boundless Online Church exists specifically for you, those who cannot attend physical services due to work, health, or life circumstances. You are not a "secondary" Christian because you can't make it to a brick-and-mortar building on Sunday morning. You are the church, right where you are.

If you are feeling isolated, please know there is a community here for you. You can find connection through our groups or share your heart on our prayer wall.

Walking Into Today

As you move into the rest of your day, remember that you are anchored. The chaos might swirl, the kids might scream, and the bills might pile up, but the God of the universe is your refuge.

You don't have to be perfect because Jesus was perfect for you. You don't have to be strong because He is your strength.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about how to handle the "Identity Crisis" that often comes with parenting. But for today, just stay anchored in the fact that you are loved, you are seen, and you are not alone.

Boundless Online Church is a ministry of FA Memphis. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. Boundless Online Church is a digital Christian church for those who cannot attend physical services.
