Daily Parent Devotional: Grace for the Sleepless Nights (March 11)

It is 3:14 AM on a Wednesday morning, and the world outside your window is wrapped in a heavy, silent darkness. Inside your home, the atmosphere is anything but quiet. Maybe you are rocking a newborn who seems convinced that nighttime is for party time, or perhaps you are pacing the hallway with a toddler who is struggling through a bout of teething or a bad dream. Your eyes are heavy, your back aches, and the weight of tomorrow’s responsibilities is already starting to press down on your shoulders. In these moments, it is easy to feel completely isolated, as if you are the only person on the planet awake and struggling. But there is a profound spiritual truth waiting for you in the middle of the nursery floor: you are never truly alone, and there is a specific, overflowing kind of grace reserved just for the weary parent.

The exhaustion of early parenthood is a unique kind of tired that transcends physical fatigue. it seeps into your emotions and your spiritual life, making it hard to find the words to pray or the energy to open your Bible. When Dr. Layne McDonald, our Online and Connection Pastor, talks about the mission of Boundless Online Church, he often reminds us that faith isn't just for the high points of life. It is designed for the trenches. For the parent standing over a crib in the middle of the night, the Gospel isn't just a set of doctrines; it is a lifeline. It is the assurance that the God who created the universe is also the God who sees the tears of a tired mom or dad.

One of the most comforting scriptures for a sleepless night is found in Psalm 121. The Psalmist writes that He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Think about that for a moment. While you are struggling to keep your eyes open, God is fully awake, fully present, and fully aware of your needs. He doesn't grow weary, and He doesn't need a nap. When you feel like you are at the end of your rope, you can lean into the strength of the One who never tires. You are not carrying the weight of your family’s well-being by yourself. You are co-laboring with a Heavenly Father who cares for your children even more than you do.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we place a high value on the presence of the Holy Spirit as our Comforter and Helper. In the Greek, this word is "Paraclete," which literally means "one called alongside." When you are sitting in the dark, you can ask the Holy Spirit to come alongside you. You don't need a long, formal prayer. Sometimes, a simple "Help me, Lord" or "Give me peace, Holy Spirit" is the most powerful prayer you can offer. This is the beauty of a Spirit-empowered life; the power of God isn't reserved for the church sanctuary on Sunday morning. It is available in the rocking chair, at the changing table, and in the quiet moments of a long night. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, especially when their current season of life makes it hard to get to a physical building. If you are feeling disconnected, you can always explore how we stay plugged in even from home.

Grace is often a misunderstood word. We think of it as something we need when we’ve done something wrong, but grace is also the fuel that keeps us going when we have nothing left to give. It is the "divine enablement" that allows you to be patient when you want to be frustrated. It is the quiet strength that helps you speak softly when your nerves are frayed. On those mornings when you wake up feeling like you’ve already failed because you’re too tired to start the day with a smile, remember that God’s mercies are new every morning. His grace is sufficient for the messy hair, the cold coffee, and the overwhelming laundry piles. He isn't looking for a perfect parent; He is looking for a dependent one.

As parents of young children, it is easy to feel like your spiritual life is on "pause." You might miss the days when you could spend an hour in deep study or attend every service. But your service to your children is, in itself, a form of worship. When you care for "the least of these" in your own home, you are doing it unto the Lord. Every bottle made, every nightmare soothed, and every prayer whispered over a sleeping child is an act of spiritual significance. You are the primary hands and feet of Jesus to your children. This is your mission field, and God is equipping you for it every single day, even when you feel ill-equipped.

We recognize that for many in our community, whether you are a shift worker, a single parent, or someone dealing with a chronic illness that affects your sleep, the "normal" church schedule doesn't always work. That is why Boundless Online Church exists. We want to be a resource for you at 2:00 PM or 2:00 AM. If you can't make it to a physical gathering, you can still join us for Sunday live worship or catch up on the Word whenever your schedule allows. Your spiritual growth doesn't have to stop just because your sleep has.

It’s also important to remember that this season of sleeplessness, as long as it feels right now, is temporary. There will come a day when the house is quiet and everyone sleeps through the night. While you are in the middle of it, try to find "pockets of grace." This might mean taking five minutes to sit in silence with a cup of tea while the baby naps, or it might mean asking for help so you can get an extra hour of rest. Self-care isn't selfish; it is stewardship of the body God gave you. When you are rested, you are better able to reflect the character of Christ to your family. Don't be afraid to reach out to your community on the prayer wall if you need others to stand in the gap for you during a particularly rough week.

The Bible tells us that children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, it’s hard to feel like "rewarded" is the right word. But when the sun starts to peak over the horizon and you see that little face finally resting peacefully, take a moment to thank God for the privilege of parenthood. He chose you for these children. He knew exactly what they would need, and He knew that through His strength, you could provide it. You are doing a great work, and the seeds of faith you are planting now, even through your exhaustion, will one day grow into a beautiful harvest.

As you go through your day today, try to keep a "breath prayer" in your heart. This is a short phrase you can repeat in rhythm with your breathing. It could be "Jesus, give me rest" or "Lord, I trust You." Let these small moments of connection with the Father sustain you. You don't need a mountain-top experience to hear from God; He is often found in the "still, small voice" that speaks to us in the mundane moments of our lives. If you find yourself scrolling through your phone in the dark, looking for a bit of encouragement, remember that our blog is full of resources to help you stay grounded in the Word.

Boundless Online Church is a ministry of FA Memphis. We are here to support you in every season, especially the ones that leave you feeling drained. If you are struggling today, please know that you are loved, you are seen, and you are being prayed for. Parenting is one of the hardest jobs on earth, but it is also one of the most sacred. Carry that thought with you as you head into tonight. Whether the night is long or short, God is with you, and His grace is more than enough to carry you through to the morning.
