Daily Parent Devotional: Your Identity Beyond Parenthood (March 15)

If you are reading this on a Sunday morning while balancing a lukewarm cup of coffee and trying to remember the last time you had a conversation that didn’t involve cartoons or school schedules, take a deep breath. You are in good company. Parenting is a beautiful, high calling that stretches us in ways we never thought possible, but it also has a way of becoming all-consuming. Somewhere between the first diaper change and the first driving lesson, it is incredibly easy to lose sight of the person God created you to be outside of your role as "Mom" or "Dad."

Today, March 15, we are taking a moment to pause. We want to look past the "parent" label and remember the core of who you are. This isn’t about neglecting your kids or devaluing your role in the family. In fact, understanding your identity in Christ actually makes you a better parent. When you know who you are in Him, you lead from a place of overflow rather than a place of exhaustion. You start to realize that while you are a parent for a season, you are a child of God for eternity.

Think back to a time before your life was defined by the needs of others. Maybe it was a hobby you loved, a dream you held, or simply a sense of peace you felt in your own skin. God hasn't forgotten that person. In fact, He is still refining that person. One of the core beliefs we hold dear is the doctrine of sanctification. This is the work of the Holy Spirit in us, set apart from sin and dedicated to God. This process doesn’t stop just because you have kids. God is working in you, for you, and through you, independent of your performance as a parent.

When we look at the Scriptures, we see that our identity is firmly rooted in what Christ has already done. Second Corinthians 5:17 tells us that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. The old has passed away, and the new has come. This "newness" isn't tied to your domestic success. It’s tied to your relationship with Jesus. You are a new creation because He redeemed you, not because you managed to get everyone to church on time or because your kids are making straight A’s. Your value is inherent and eternal.

For many of us, especially those working late shifts, managing households solo, or navigating the complexities of modern life, the "parent" identity feels like a heavy cloak we can never take off. We feel like we are constantly "on." But the Bible invites us to find our rest in a different identity. You are a friend of God. You are an heir to His kingdom. You are "fearfully and wonderfully made," as the Psalmist says in Psalm 139. Those words were true about you before you had children, and they remain true today.

It is helpful to remember that parenting is a stewardship, not an identity. We are entrusted with these little lives to point them toward the Father, but our souls still need their own nourishment. If you find yourself feeling invisible, like you are just a chauffeur, a cook, or a disciplinarian, remember that God sees you. He sees the hidden work, yes, but He also sees the heart that is longing for connection with Him. He knows your name, and it’s not just "Junior’s Mom."

In our community at Boundless Online Church, we often talk about how we are a digital church serving those who cannot attend in person. This includes parents who are homebound with sick kids, shift workers who miss Sunday mornings, and families in remote areas. We want you to know that your spiritual growth is vital. You aren't just a support system for your children’s faith; you are a primary recipient of God’s grace yourself. You deserve the time to sit at the feet of Jesus, just like Mary did, choosing the "better portion" that won't be taken away from you.

As you go through your day today, try to catch yourself when you define your worth by your parenting wins or losses. When the toddler has a meltdown or the teenager is distant, it can feel like a personal failure. But your identity is anchored in the "Anchor of Truth," as we often discuss in our The Boundless Daily Global Micro-Study. Christ is the one who defines you. He says you are forgiven, loved, and chosen. Those labels don't change based on how your day is going.

We also believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to empower us for daily living. This is one of the 16 Fundamental Truths: the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This isn't just for "big" church moments; it’s for the quiet moments in the kitchen or the stressful moments in the car. The Spirit is your Comforter and your Helper. He reminds you of your true identity when the world tries to bury it under a mountain of laundry and expectations. Ask the Holy Spirit today to give you a "God-eye view" of yourself.

Finding your identity beyond parenthood also means making space for the things that stir your soul. Maybe it's a five-minute walk alone, a short prayer during your commute, or engaging with a group where you can talk about things other than parenting. It’s okay to have interests, passions, and a spiritual life that is uniquely yours. In fact, it’s healthy. Your children will benefit from seeing a parent who is whole, who knows who they are in Christ, and who finds joy in their Creator.

If you are feeling overwhelmed today, remember that the "Blessed Hope" of the Church: the resurrection and the return of Christ: gives us a perspective that outlasts our current struggles. One day, the roles we play on earth will give way to our eternal reality as children of God in His presence. The stress of today is temporary, but your position in God’s family is permanent. You are more than a parent; you are a beloved member of the Body of Christ.

Take some time today to reflect on Ephesians 2:10: "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Notice that it says we are His handiwork. You are a masterpiece in progress. The "good works" God has for you certainly include raising your children, but they also include the unique ways He wants to use your specific gifts and personality to bless others and glorify Him.

We want to encourage you to keep leaning into your faith. Whether you are catching up on a Sunday Live Worship stream during a nap time or reading this in a quiet moment before the house wakes up, you are part of a global family. We are all learning together how to balance the demands of life with the call to follow Jesus. Your identity is secure in Him. You are seen, you are known, and you are loved far beyond what you do for your family.

As we move forward into this week, let's challenge ourselves to speak truth over our lives. When you feel the weight of "not being enough," remind yourself that Christ is enough in you. When you feel lost in the routine, remind yourself that you are on a divine mission that started long before you became a parent and will continue into eternity. You are a child of the King, and that is the most important thing about you.
