Devotional : Evening Reflection - Tucked in His Peace

A Message from FA Memphis

Hey there, family! As the sun dips below the horizon and the house begins to settle into that rhythmic hum of evening, we wanted to reach out from First Assembly Memphis. Whether your day was a mountain-climbing success or a bit of a muddy puddle trek, we are so glad you’re here. Tonight, we’re leaning into the quiet. We’re reminding ourselves (and our kiddos) that we aren't just "getting through" the night; we are resting in the hands of the Creator. Let’s take a deep breath together. You’re doing a great job, and God has the night shift covered.

Scripture: Psalm 4:8

"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."

Reflection: The One True God is Your Night Watchman

Have you ever noticed how different the world looks when the lights go out? A pile of laundry on a chair suddenly looks like a grumpy bear. The floorboards creak just a little louder. For little ones, and let’s be honest, for us big kids too, the night can feel like a place where we lose control.

But here is the beautiful truth we’re focusing on tonight: The One True God.

According to the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths, we believe in the One True God who has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent “I AM.” He is the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind.

Think about that for a second. The same God who gathered the dust to make the stars and told the oceans exactly where to stop is the same God who sits by your bedside. Because He is the only true God, there is no other power, no other "big scary thing," and no "what if" that is bigger than Him. He doesn't get tired. He doesn't need a nap. He doesn't get distracted by a phone notification.

When Psalm 4:8 says "You alone Lord," it means we don't need luck, we don't need to keep one eye open, and we don't need to worry. We dwell in safety because the King of the Universe is on the night shift. He is the One True God, and He is completely, 100% crazy about you.

Kids’ Story: Leo and the Great Night Watchman

Leo was a professional shadow-watcher. Every night, after his mom tucked him in and turned off the big light, Leo would sit up and wait.

Creak. "Is that a giant?" Leo whispered to his stuffed giraffe, Barnaby.

Whoosh. "Is that a ghost in the curtains?" Leo wondered, pulling the blanket up to his nose.

One night, his dad came in and saw Leo’s eyes glowing like two little marbles in the dark. Dad sat on the edge of the bed. "Still looking for giants, Leo?"

Leo nodded quickly. "The dark is too big, Dad. It feels like God might lose me in here."

Dad smiled and picked up Leo’s small glowing lantern. "Leo, do you remember who made the light?"

"God did," Leo said.

"And who made the dark?"

Leo thought for a second. "God did?"

"Exactly," Dad said. "The Bible tells us about the One True God. That means He’s the boss of everything. He’s the boss of the sun, the boss of the moon, and He’s even the boss of the shadows. To Him, the dark is just as bright as the day! He isn't watching you from far away in the clouds; He’s right here, like a Great Night Watchman who never falls asleep."

Leo hugged Barnaby tight. "So, if He’s the One True God, that means there’s nobody else bigger than Him?"

"Nobody," Dad said. "He’s the 'I AM.' He was here before the world started, and He’ll be here forever. You can close your eyes because His eyes are always open."

Leo took a big breath. He watched the soft glow of his lantern and thought about the One True God standing guard. For the first time all week, Leo didn't watch the shadows. He watched the light until his eyes felt very, very heavy.

The Chronicles of the Brightwood Lantern: Chapter 4

The Whispering Woods

Pip held the brass handle of the Brightwood Lantern so tightly his knuckles turned white. The path through the Whispering Woods was narrowing, and the trees seemed to be leaning in, murmuring secrets in the wind.

"Don't listen to them, Pip," whispered Mallow, the small blue bird perched on his shoulder. "The woods like to tell tall tales when the sun goes down."

"But they're saying I'm lost!" Pip squeaked. "They're saying the Great King forgot I was out here."

Suddenly, the lantern’s flame flickered and turned a brilliant, warm gold. The light pushed back the purple mists of the woods, and Pip noticed something carved into the trunk of an ancient oak tree. It was a symbol he recognized from the Great Hall, the mark of the One True King.

"He was here," Pip breathed. "If He was here to mark the trees, He’s here now."

Pip remembered what his grandfather had told him: “The King is the only King. All other voices are just echoes.”

As Pip whispered the King’s name, the lantern glowed even brighter. The "whispers" of the woods didn't seem like secrets anymore; they just sounded like wind in the leaves. Pip realized that as long as he carried the light of the One True King, he was never truly in the dark. He took a step forward, his heart beating a little slower, a little steadier.

Parent-Child Bible Study: Knowing the "I AM"

Goal: To help children understand that God is the only God and that His power is our protection.

Read Together: Psalm 4:8 and Exodus 3:14 (where God calls Himself "I AM").

Discussion Questions:

  1. If you could build anything in the world, what would it be? (Wait for answer). God built the entire world! Does that make Him stronger than anything else?

  2. Why is it good news that there is only one true God? (Hint: It means we don’t have to worry about who is in charge!)

  3. How does it feel to know that God never sleeps?

The Big Truth: When we say God is the "One True God," we are saying He is the Original. Everything else, the trees, the stars, your toys, even us, was made by Him. Because He made everything, He knows how to fix everything and how to keep everything safe. You can find more about this in our post on Faith at 3 AM: Why God Never Sleeps on the Night Shift.

Tips for Raising Peaceful Sleepers

  1. The "Blessing Breath": Before the final "goodnight," have your child take three deep breaths. With each breath, say one thing God did today (e.g., "God made the sunshine," "God gave us yummy pasta").

  2. Audio Scripture: Play soft worship or spoken Scripture at a low volume. Letting the Word of God be the last thing they hear helps anchor their heart in truth. Check out our Media Page for encouraging content.

  3. The "Safety Shield": Remind them that God's presence is like an invisible shield. You can even "draw" a shield in the air over their bed to symbolize His protection.

Hands-On Faith: The "One True Light" Lantern

Items Needed:

  • An empty, clean glass jar (like a jelly jar).

  • Tissue paper (warm colors like yellow, orange, and gold).

  • Glue or Mod Podge.

  • A battery-operated tea light (never use real candles for this!).

  • A permanent marker.

Instructions:

  1. On the outside of the jar, help your child write "Psalm 4:8" or "The One True God" with the marker.

  2. Tear the tissue paper into small bits.

  3. Glue the tissue paper all over the jar until it’s covered in a beautiful mosaic of warm colors.

  4. Once dry, place the tea light inside.

Spiritual Connection Script: "Tonight, as we make this lantern, let's remember that God is the One True Light. Just like this light chases away the shadows in the jar, God’s presence chases away our fears. When you see this glowing by your bed, remember that the 'I AM' is right here with you."

Note: All craft templates are designed for standard US Letter paper size (8.5" x 11").

Action: The Bedtime Ritual

Tonight, before you turn off the lights, try this:

  • The Hand-off: Have your child hold out their hands like they are holding a heavy box. Tell them to put all their "worries" from the day into that box. Then, together, "lift" the box up to God and say, "God, You are the One True God. You are big enough to hold this. I’m going to sleep now."

  • The Tucking In: As you pull the blankets up, say, "You are tucked in God's peace."

Family Question

"What was one 'God-moment' you saw today? Where did you see the One True God showing His love to our family?"

Evening Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for being the One True God. Thank You that You are bigger than the dark and stronger than my fears. I am handing You my day, the messy parts and the happy parts. Please watch over my family while we dream. I trust You to keep us safe because You never sleep. In Jesus' name, Amen.
