Digital Ministry: Is AI Bad for Your Soul? 10 Things You Should Know About Faith and Technology

Grab a cup of coffee and pull up a chair. Whether you’re sitting on a porch in Memphis watching the humidity rise or scrolling through your phone during a quick break at work, I’m glad you’re here. There’s a lot of noise out there right now, isn’t there? Everywhere we turn, people are talking about Artificial Intelligence. Some say it’s the end of the world; others say it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. But for those of us trying to walk with Jesus, the question is a bit deeper: Is this thing actually bad for my soul?
It’s a heavy question, and it’s okay to feel a little uneasy about it. Maybe you’ve felt that slight tug of anxiety when you see a computer writing a sermon or a "virtual" person offering life advice. You might wonder if we’re losing something sacred in all this digital speed. If you’ve been feeling a mix of curiosity and caution, you’re in the right place. We’re going to look at this through the lens of faith, not fear.
The Digital Front Porch: Finding Peace in the Algorithm
Let’s be honest for a second. Technology has always been a double-edged sword. From the printing press to the smartphone, every big jump in how we communicate has forced us to ask: Who is the master here?
The "pain" many of us feel with AI isn't just about jobs or privacy, it's about intimacy. We worry that if a machine can simulate wisdom, we might stop seeking the Source of wisdom. We worry that if we can get an "answer" in three seconds from an algorithm, we’ll lose the patience to wait on the Lord. It’s the fear of being replaced, or worse, the fear of becoming as cold and mechanical as the tools we use.
But here is the good news: AI can’t touch your soul unless you let it. Your soul belongs to the One who breathed life into you, and no line of code can ever replicate that "ruach", the breath of God.

10 Things You Should Know About AI and Your Faith
To help navigate these digital waters, let’s look at ten principles that keep our feet on the rock while the tech world shifts under us.
1. AI is a Tool, Not a Spirit
The first thing we have to settle is what AI actually is. It’s complex software. It’s a calculator on steroids. It can process billions of words, but it doesn't "know" anything. It doesn't have a heart, it doesn't feel conviction, and it certainly hasn't been redeemed by the blood of Christ. When we treat it as just a tool, like a hammer or a car, it loses its power to intimidate us.
2. The Rule of "No Bowing Down"
In the book of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced a massive image and were told to bow down. Today, the "image" is digital. We face a temptation to treat AI as an oracle, a source of ultimate truth. Our stance must be the same as those three Hebrew boys: No Bowing Down. We use the tech, but we don't worship the results. Exodus 20:3 reminds us, "You shall have no other gods before me." If we start trusting an algorithm more than the Word of God, we’ve crossed into idolatry.
3. The Refining Fire of Technology
Technology often acts as a Refining Fire. Malachi 3:2 asks, "But who can endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire." Just as heat separates gold from dross, the presence of AI in our lives reveals what we truly value. Does it make you realize how much you miss real human connection? Does it push you to study your Bible more so you can spot "digital" lies? Let this tech era refine your faith, making it purer and more focused on Jesus.
4. AI Can’t Replace the Holy Spirit
You might find an AI that can write a prayer, but it cannot pray. It can provide information, but it cannot provide revelation. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Guide (John 14:26). An algorithm can give you a list of verses about grief, but only the Spirit can sit with you in the middle of the night and actually heal your broken heart.
5. Guarding Against Dehumanization
One of the biggest risks to the soul is "dehumanization", treating people like data points. AI encourages us to prefer the "efficient" over the "embodied." But God became flesh in Jesus. He didn't send a digital message; He came in person. We must stay rooted in real, messy, beautiful human community. That’s why we value our virtual small groups at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org, because even though we’re online, the people and the prayers are 100% real.
6. Scripture is the Final Filter
In a world of "deepfakes" and AI-generated content, we need a standard that never changes. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Every bit of "wisdom" an AI gives you should be run through the filter of the Bible. If the bot says something that contradicts the Word, the bot is wrong. Period.
7. AI Has No "Soul" (And Never Will)
Scientists might talk about "consciousness," but the Bible is clear: God alone is the giver of life (Genesis 2:7). A machine can simulate empathy, but it cannot love. It can simulate regret, but it cannot repent. You are a unique creation, made in the Image of God (Imago Dei). No matter how smart a computer gets, it will never be your equal in the eyes of Heaven.
8. The Temptation of the "Oracle"
We live in a "fast-food" spiritual culture. We want answers now. AI feeds that desire. But the soul grows in the waiting. James 1:5 tells us to ask God for wisdom, not an app. Information is cheap; wisdom is hard-won through experience, suffering, and walking with the Lord. Don't let a chatbot rob you of the spiritual growth that comes from wrestling with God in prayer.
9. Embodied Community Still Matters
Even as an online church, we believe the goal is always connection. Whether you’re in Memphis or Manila, the goal of technology should be to bring us closer to God and each other. If AI makes you more isolated, it’s hurting your soul. If you use it to help you translate a Bible study or organize a prayer list for your neighbors, it’s serving its purpose.
10. Using the Tools for the Great Commission
Finally, remember that God can use anything for His glory. We can use these tools to reach people who have never heard the Gospel. We can use translation AI to share the love of Jesus across language barriers. We don't run from the fire; we let it refine our tools so we can work more effectively for the Kingdom.

A Pastoral Insight: Keep Your Eyes on the Gardener
There’s an old saying that "the devil is in the details," but I like to think that God is in the growth. Technology is just the soil we’re planting in right now. It might be digital soil, but the seeds of the Gospel are still the same.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pace of change, take a deep breath. Jesus isn't surprised by AI. He isn't worried about his "market share." He is still on the throne, and He still loves you more than you can imagine.
If you find yourself "bowing down" to your screen, getting anxious over the news or feeling like you can't live without the latest update, take a fast. Put the phone down. Go outside. Look at the trees. Talk to a neighbor. Remind your soul who its Master really is.
A Simple Prayer for the Digital Age: Lord, thank You for the tools we have to connect and learn. But today, I declare that You are my only Source. I will not bow down to algorithms or seek my worth in digital data. Refine my faith in this fire. Help me to see people as You see them, and to use every tool at my disposal to bring glory to Your name. Amen.
