Divine Healing: God's Care for the Broken Body

If you are reading this from a hospital bed, a waiting room, or your own couch while nursing a chronic injury, I want you to know something right away: God sees you.

He doesn't just see your "spirit" or your "soul." He sees your physical body. He sees the pain in your lower back, the exhaustion in your lungs, and the frustration in your heart when your body won't do what it used to do.

Sometimes, in religious circles, we focus so much on "going to heaven" that we forget God cares deeply about our life right here, right now. At Boundless Online Church, we believe that your physical health matters to the Creator of the universe.

More Than Just a "Shell"

There is a common mistake people make when thinking about faith. They think the body is just a temporary "shell" that doesn't really matter. But if the body didn't matter, why would Jesus spend so much of His time on earth fixing them?

When you look at the life of Jesus, He didn't just give lectures. He touched eyes that couldn't see. He took the hands of people who couldn't walk. He healed skin diseases that had kept people isolated from their families for years.

Jesus didn't view healing as a secondary task. He viewed it as a primary way to show what the Kingdom of God looks like. In the Kingdom of God, there is no pain. There is no cancer. There are no broken bones. When Jesus healed people, He was bringing a "preview" of heaven down to earth.

The Theology of the Broken Body

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we hold to what we call the "16 Fundamental Truths." Number 12 on that list is Divine Healing.

This isn't just a nice idea we came up with to make people feel better. It is rooted in the very work that Jesus did on the cross. Most of us know that Jesus died to forgive our sins, and that is the greatest gift of all. But the Bible also tells us that His sacrifice covered our sicknesses, too.

The prophet Isaiah wrote about Jesus hundreds of years before He was born, saying: "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5)

This means that healing is part of the "package deal" of the Gospel. It is a privilege for every believer. God isn't annoyed by your request for healing. He invited you to ask for it.

When You Are in the Middle of the Recovery

If you’re currently recovering from surgery or dealing with a long-term illness, the road can feel incredibly lonely. You might wonder why healing hasn't happened "instantly."

It’s important to understand that God works in many different ways. Sometimes, healing is an immediate, supernatural miracle that leaves doctors scratching their heads. We love those stories, and we pray for them constantly!

But other times, God works through the "natural" process of recovery. He works through the hands of a skilled surgeon. He works through the medicine that stabilizes your blood pressure. He works through the physical therapist who helps you regain your strength.

God is the author of all healing, whether it happens in a split second or over six months of rehab. If you are in that "middle" stage, the waiting stage, don't lose heart. Your recovery isn't a sign of a lack of faith. It’s a process that God is walking through right beside you.

Practical Steps for the Sick

If you are hurting today, what should you actually do? The Bible gives us a very practical "how-to" guide in the book of James.

It says: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord." (James 5:14)

There is something powerful about involving others in your journey. Healing often happens in the context of community. Even though we are an online church, that community is real. We believe in the power of "the prayer of faith."

Here is what that looks like for us:

  1. Acknowledge the need. You don't have to "fake it" or pretend you aren't hurting.

  2. Ask for prayer. Don't carry the weight of your illness alone.

  3. Trust God's heart. Even when the body is broken, God’s love for you is whole.

If you’re looking for a community to study these truths deeper, you might want to check out our Bible Study Club. It’s a great place to connect with others who are navigating life’s challenges with faith.

Dealing With the "Why?"

We have to be honest: sometimes we pray, and the healing doesn't come when or how we want it to. This is one of the hardest parts of the Christian walk.

We see people we love struggle with illness for years. We see "good people" get sick. In these moments, it’s easy to feel like God has forgotten you or that you’ve done something wrong.

Let me be very clear: Sickness is not always a result of personal sin, and a lack of immediate healing is not a sign of weak faith.

We live in a broken world. Our bodies are subject to the wear and tear of a world that isn't yet fully restored. But even in the "not yet," God provides comfort. He provides the "peace that passes understanding."

The ultimate healing is the one waiting for us in the resurrection, where we will receive bodies that never tire, never ache, and never fail. Until then, we stand on the promise that God is our Healer, and we keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking.

A Prayer for You Right Now

Before you close this page, I want to offer a simple prayer for you.

Father, I pray for the person reading this right now. You know exactly where they hurt. You know the report from the doctor and the fear in their mind. I ask for Your healing touch to rest upon their body. Give the doctors wisdom, give the body strength to recover, and give their heart a deep sense of Your presence. We thank You that by the wounds of Jesus, we find healing. Amen.

If you have questions about divine healing or just need someone to agree with you in prayer, please reach out. We believe that no one should have to walk through a season of sickness by themselves.

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.
